Mt. Diablo Unified School District (MDUSD) and Mt. Diablo Education Association (MDEA) have arrived at a tentative agreement for students to return to campus in a hybrid model in phases, beginning with Pre-K through 2nd Grade and SDC classes on Thursday, March 25, 2021.
Students who choose the hybrid model would return to campus for about two and a half hours a day, two days a week.
According to the agreement:
- All students will engage in daily live interaction with their current teacher during the distance learning instructional block on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.
- All students (Distance Learning and Hybrid) will receive daily live interaction daily participation and progress monitoring on Wednesdays.
- All students (Distance Learning and Hybrid) will receive learning support during the learning support block.
- Distance Learning Students will receive Virtual Learning Support from a Distance Learning Educator.
- Hybrid Learning Students will receive In-Person Learning Support from a Hybrid Educator.
- Virtual Learning Support is teacher-directed time which may include, but is not limited to, providing small group support, intervention support, tutoring, adult-student check in/connection time, independent credit recovery activities, and follow-up with targeted students from morning instruction.
To become final, the tentative agreement will need ratification from MDEA members and a vote of approval from the MDUSD Governing Board. The Governing Board had already been scheduled to meet tonight, March 16, for a special meeting to take action on a reopening timeline.
If the tentative agreement is ratified by both parties, the district will move to notify parents and implement reopening plans.

As parents with children too young to be left home alone are called back to work full time, where are parents going to find daycare and then money to pay for it?
Private schools are open full time, is that correct ?
Who exactly, runs this school district ? ? ? ?
President Reagan, air traffic controllers.
Not all private schools are full time.
The on-site day care may be opening also.
Most are. And those that are not are doing a REAL hybrid.
You are correct. Many of them are open full time in person. The public schools are a joke. The California public schools are laughable. Look at the state test scores if you don’t believe me.
LOL this is the most idiotic thing ever. Yes, let’s flip everything upside down, again, create chaotic schedules for teachers and students so some of them can go to school for a few hours a day, for a few more weeks until summer, so the school district can grab some more of that sweet free money from the government, line the pockets of management, and try to appease parents who don’t want their own dingle berry kids in the house. I feel bad for all the teachers that have to put up with this nonsense. Hopefully they get a good pay bump but someone I doubt that would happen.
There are kids suffering deleterious effects from going to “school” via Zoom for over an EFFING FULL CALENDAR YEAR, sports postponed repeatedly, but yet we have morons just chalking it up to parents wanting to get their “dingle berry” out of the house.
And hilarious you feel bad for the teachers…it’s the TEACHERS and their insane, craven, pathetic union that caused this “nonsense”.
Teachers won’t see any of the money.
Feel bad for the teachers?
Pay them more money?
Why and for what?
Maybe (hopefully) you are just being sarcastic.
It’s all BS. Learning Support is not Hybrid in class teaching. Good show MDUSD and Teachers Union! Now you qualify for part of the 2 billion dollar “incentive” from Newsom. And you get part of pie from the Potato Head in DC. All about the money…
Your right. It IS about the money. The district wants to get the schools open before it’s safe, and before proper measures are taken to protect the students and teachers. All for some money which will not trickle down to the classrooms. Have you seen the PPE packages supplied to the teachers? A joke!
If the schools don’t open soon, how will the students learn the difference between your and you’re.
Cowellian: 🤣
Excellent job Jazzman. Please continue to spout the union talking points and disregard completely the evidence regarding transmission rates among school age children. Still keeping that independent minded teacher spouse of yours locked up until YOU decide its OK?
A joke is thinking that teachers need fancy PPE.
A five pack of KN95 masks, use one for each day of the week and let them air out on off days. Total cost, approximately ten bucks. Wow, complex
Lol. Jazz is probably a teacher. Most would not know the difference between your and you’re. And only a stooge or deluded union peon thinks that a teacher needs fancy PPE. Wear a mask and YOU’RE fine.
Wow, I guess some progress, months too late, is maybe better than none? Maybe… this is pretty grotesque, though. Throwing some crumbs to the kids, but only for parents who can drop them off in the middle of the day. smh
All the teachers will be vaccinated by this point. There’s no reason for these hybrid shenanigans.
I can’t believe this took a 61 page agreement.
Wait, I take that back. We’re dealing with the
Teachers Union. I can’t believe it only took
61 pages from this group to make so little
progress.
The baby sitters union and baby sitters will soon be on summer vacation. Truly they are BABY SITTERS as there can’t be any teaches teaching in California, 49th out of 50 states. The worst educational system in the country.
Vouchers
MDUSD’s enrollment is hemorrhaging students. This is proof there is no more government service, only government employees. The ship has left the dock, now parents only send their kids to public school if they can’t afford private(that is how horrible MDUSD has become). Record number of students repeating grades, record low enrollment, record amount of tax payers dollars wasted, record high enrollment and wait list at private schools.
Well done MDUSD….slow clap….very very slow slow clap
private schools have been open all this time, what a load of BS
None of these hybrid plans are good. Until kids are back in school full time, I’d prefer the distance learning
@ Mika
The problem I see with that statement is the union and teachers will think they have succeeded with distance learning and then will push back on why they EVER have to go back in the classroom.
.. I distinctly notice that it doesn’t state the number of hours per day the kids are back in the classroom – when they are in class… soooooo 2 hrs per day for 2 days per week?
It does state the times…12:30-2:55 TK-5th, 12:55-3:00 Middle School, 1:05-3:10 High School. And that would be 2 days/wk, so yes a whopping 4-5 hours/week depending on grade.
The, two hour per day , twice a week.
At my son’s high school those classes are homeroom classes, kids will check in with their homeroom teachers and the do homework.
All the current classes will be still online. I am in disbelieve…
The district is getting money for this, and teachers are getting vaccinated.
Sorry for some typos…
This is just ridiculous.
It’s time to oust this school board and disband the district.
Kids should be in school full time.
This overly complicated and unmanageable cluster of confusion is a waste of time and money.
Open the schools or shut down the MDUSD, one of the worst districts in the state.
Quite possibly, MDEA is the most inept and criminal union in the entire country. The parasitic CTA zombies have their fingerprints all over this.
It feels like we are living in the Twilight Zone, the union is allowed to strong arm us taxpayers, using our own tax dollars to do so.
There has to be a way to dismantle this crooked syndicate for good.
MDEA- Sign the recall for the board. They were funded by the union. Replace them with people whoa actually care about the kids and you can see the union get theirs.
Boy am I glad we’re moving east of the Rockies this summer where my soon to be 4th grader can go to an actual brick and mortar 5 whole days a week. Not to mention the schools where we’re going score 7 or higher on the Niche scores
Boy am I glad my kids are done with this POS district. I’m pretty well-read, educated and so forth, and I don’t understand a word of this “notice”. Your children are doomed! #PrivateSchool
For you parents who might be struggling with childcare during all this, and perhaps even more so under this ridiculous hybrid plan where kids don’t go to campus until afternoon, you’ll be excited to learn that TEACHERS needn’t burden themselves with such concerns, as this agreement allows for “bargaining unit members” to “bring their school age child(ren) to work with them.”
.. it’s only 5 hrs per week! gimme a break! Then you don’t need all that high cost overhead and need fewer teachers!
Teachers have lost any sense of credibility at this point and no longer deserve society’s respect. They will be held in contempt for years to come. I metaphorically spit on them in disgust!!!!!!
THEY GOT A RAISE!
I don’t see Wednesday mentioned anywhere in the document. Looks like the teachers are down to a four day work week. I know they call it an “organizational” day or something like that. If they moved it to a Friday then we would all realize that it is in fact a day off.
PS: I’ve heard from the kids that even art teachers spout politics in art class at Pine Hollow intermediate. The indoctrination goes on. And somebody thought teachers were just babysitters.
@Jimmy-art now focuses on social justice @ most schools, especially high schools. Most of the art projects involve some kind of social justice theme.
MDUSD is a complete disgrace. One of our major colleges tells student teachers to do their student teaching at MDUSD because there are excellent teachers but DO NOT apply for a job in the district. I am telling you with all sincerity that we miss the kids and their little personalities. Zoom is a joke. 2 hours a day is shocking! Ridiculous! The anxiety that teachers and parents and students are experiencing is heartbreaking. Please think about the planning, assessing, one-on-one emails and calls with parents, meetings, etc. I know I can’t change your mind but please know that most teachers agree with these comments. There are a few with loud voices that are so afraid and have dragged this out. Sorry this is so long. Thanks for reading it.
Frustrated 1st grade teacher.
Thank you for being about the kids. Blessings to you. Please quit the union.
Why would I want to go back to teaching 7 hours a day 5 days a week when I can make my same salary, from home, and only work 2 hours a day 4 days a week?
Don’t tell me you wouldn’t vote for the same benefits….
Not when I’m virtually stealing that money from tax payers…
I have several teacher friends, they were all for going back to school and doing what was right when there was no possibility of it in the future. Now that it’s knocking on the door they don’t want to go back. They honestly complain about losing the freedom they have (lack of having to do work) in the much down time they have and too say this hybrid plan is a waste of them going in… “better be getting a nice raise if they want me to support going in”. It’s just sad, the worst if of those without children at home. It’s been one big paid vacation with a few clusters of check ins a few days a week. So much respect has been lost. I appreciate my company for keeping me working, even if limited hours from home so someone is there for my kids. Many of us suffering but god forbid the teachers make any adjustments like the rest of us continue to do. You think that Starbucks barista wants to but their life at risk for you to have a ice coffee on one of your many PAID breaks during the day… NO but it’s how they earn their money IN A PANDEMIC by getting their butt to work. Somehow that’s needed but in person teaching is an ongoing debate.
2 1/2 hours a day twice a week of in-class instruction is a sick joke or child abuse. Public education needs to be defunded and rebuilt from the ground up.
Meanwhile …no one is paying attention to the states new ethnic curriculum…
