Bay Area Blood Centers Call For Donations

Blood centers already in need of donations due to the COVID-19 pandemic face more shortages due to severe winter weather around the country.

Local hospitals rely on a national supply of blood, which is facing a shortage due to severe winter weather in much of the country, according to officials with the Stanford Blood Center, which faces a critical need for all blood types, especially O-positive.

“O-positive is the most frequently-needed blood type for patients and, as of today, we only have about a two-day supply,” said Dr. Suchi Pandey, the center’s chief medical officer. “Our current collections of O-positive cannot sustain our support of our regular hospital partners as well as additional hospitals in critical need right now, so we need your help in the coming days.”

Appointments to donate blood can be scheduled online at various sites around the Bay Area, including the Stanford Blood Center at stanfordbloodcenter.org or by calling (888) 723-7831 for same-day appointments; the American Red Cross at https://www.redcross.org/give-blood.html and Vitalant at https://www.vitalant.org/.

If they paid i’d do it, but for free you gotta be outta your mind with how expensive things are nowadays, and how much they charge for that blood in the hospital. HARD PASS.

God forbid you do something to help another human being especially at a time like this….

Nick, I can understand that you think manufactures are just trying to make a buck. But the reality is they have to test the blood for disease before selling it to the hospital. After all, the last thing you were trying to be transfused with is blood with pathogens

Will donate in exchange for vaccine. O-negative right here !

That’s not a bad idea. Not so much trading your blood for a vaccine but if they offered to vaccinate blood donors that would 1) encourage people to donate and 2) help reduce the possibility that donated blood would have Covid.

Personally, I’m not willing to sit in a blood donation center for the 30-40 minutes it takes to get processed through and donate, thereby risking getting Covid.

attitude of the day, it’s all about me.

@ Concord grape,

Right….it’s pretty sad. Don’t understand why some don’t realize how important being a donor is and how long the Red Cross has been doing this and how important it is.

I donate every 8 weeks . I do it to save lives.

Thank you. And I know there are many like you who also donate regularly that will never comment on (or read) this post.

I will be donating on Good Friday.

Not only is my blood O-, it is also CMV negative, which makes it safe for newborns. Due to health issues, I no longer donate, but I have donated over 5 gallons during my lifetime.

Bless all of you that are regular donors. I am a regular donor. I’m O+ and CMV negative Cowellian (thanks for donating). I am proud to be a giver of life. How could one not give at the max, 1 hour of your time, every two months, to help someone out. Red Cross in Pleasant Hill is very good about sanitizing.

I would donate, but with all the meds I take my blood would probably kill a normal person.
