4.7 percent of the Bay Area’s intensive care unit beds are now available amid the region’s latest coronavirus surge, according to the State of California.

Governor Gavin Newsom previously announced on Monday the Bay Area’s ICU capacity was 0.7 percent, however, more beds were made available since the Monday announcement.

Contra Costa’s current ICU capacity is 10.7 percent.

Did people get better, pass away , or was this Newsome ‘s math?

Every time I read the updates on ICU availability I think Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four and the Ministry of Truth with their ‘Newspeak’ 2 + 2 = 5!!

I do too! It’s purposely confusing.

Then let’s add more ICU beds to raise the capacity to 15% (or greater) so we could get out of stay-at-home order.

Interesting how statistics (that could be manipulated depending on “criteria”) are now dictating human livelihood.

And how do you propose we staff them. Staff is pulling doubles 6 days a week as it is. Per former coworkers @ CCRMC they staff is at the breaking point and has been for awhile.
If people hadn’t treated this virus like a joke this country would not be in this mess

.
It’s amazing how increasing the number of ICU beds affects the availability rate.
.
.. of course I’m being sarcastic.
.
Btw, be wary of stats stated as percentages because it is a matter of scale. I can make numbers lie all day by changing or skimming only the data that supports my case or discounts yours.. Alas, the general public is typically too ignorant to challenge the assumptions.

Moreover, I have yet to see anyone challenge the ICU bed situation… in particular, the number of OutOfTowners they imported from SoCal to magically take us from approx 35% avail, down to approx 12%….yielding a defective analysis. Anyone care to explain? Anyone?

As they say, Figures lie and liars figure!

Gas- No one needs to explain. We all know what is happening here. Lying and control. That’s all.

Figures don’t lie but…….

Seem to remember some Doctors from a local hospital mentioning something like they increased ICU beds each year for seasonal increase in Flu and Pneumonia cases ?

Wow that’s really something, announces on Monday the Bay Area’s ICU capacity is 0.7 percent and here it is Tuesday at 4.7 percent.

If it’s so easy that it can be done overnight, maybe they could get it up to,
say 9 or 10 percent by next week. But that wouldn’t screw up their latest lock down threshold metric, would it ?

Hmm, Denmark cheese quality ?

An how soon will newsom copy cuomo,
“Gov. Andrew Cuomo has finally changed his tune and announced Monday he’ll reopen New York’s economy soon because the cost of businesses remaining closed is ‘too high’…” …

“We simply cannot stay closed until the vaccine hits critical mass,’ Cuomo said Monday during his televised ‘State of the State’ address.

The cost is too high. We will have nothing left to open. We must reopen the economy, but we must do it smartly and safely.”

When you say “this is the time of the killing of the arch duke ferdinand” to what are you referring? He was assassinated on June 28, 1914. Are you saying someone is going to be murdered in order to set off a large war?

As everyone else said … it’s randomly moving goalposts. It’s like one of those carnival games where everyone looses.

While it’s critical to hospital administration, ICU capacity should never have been part of the public policy matrix.

1) It’s very much a trailing indicator. People end up in the ICU several weeks after exposure to the virus. It’s too late to change public behavior.

2) I suspect the bulk of the COVID-19 ICU patients are from the Long Term Care Facilities. At present there are sixty (!) active outbreaks of COVID-19 at LTCF in CC county. I assume all LTCF employees are masked and gowned to the gills but the virus and COVID-19 are still affecting many facilities. This is the most disconcerting aspect. The virus being active in sixty facilities shows how hard it is to keep an area safe.

I also suspect that the COVID-19 ICU patients that did not come from LTCF are either older or medically at risk people that likely were already taking as many personal precautions as possible.

The general public should not be punished or restricted for what happens inside of LTCF nor for what happens when the virus manages to get to those who had been taking precautions because they knew they were at greater risk.

@WC Resident,
I enjoyed your commentary, so eloquently said…and I wholeheartedly agree!

Nah- I work in post acute rehab (like a LTCF) and nurses are notoriously bad at wearing masks properly. So are janitors and food service workers. Despite that, we only ever had one case (in 120 bed place) and it was a patient with NO actual symptoms. Sure, staff have had it. But, it’s all been fine. But, agree that the people who should shelter and take precautions are the ones that are more at risk. This is crazy.

This is what was expected after the election.
UPDATE: Thirteen California counties are being allowed to exit the stay-at-home order immediately, despite low ICU numbers. That means outdoor dining, salons and other businesses can reopen.

this says SAC county:

4:45 p.m. Stay-at-home order lifted for Greater Sacramento region: Even though the region shows 9.4% availability of intensive care unit beds as of Tuesday — well below the state’s 15% threshold for the restrictions — Gov. Gavin Newsom announced that based on stabilized case rates and ICU projections that the regional stay-at-home order for the region would be lifted immediately. The region will now return to the purple tier of the state’s reopening plan, which allows for the reopening of several retail operations and personal care services with limited capacity.

All you people watch. The closer we get to the Biden Administration taking office the faster the COVID will disappear. The Democratic’s have succeeded in there demise to ruining this country and our freedom.

Tomorrow it will be 1.2%, then the next day 9.8%, then 3%, then 7.6%. Numbers that are arrived at by some mysterious calculation to which we ordinary peasants are not privy, and always below the 15% threshold that would lift the lockdown.

I guess it’s nice to live in Gavin’s world.

You heard different info from watching and hearing it on tv as well as on radio. Who is telling the truth. I feel the governor is playing with the numbers somehow making certain areas better then others . And I heard that the governor just let the Sacramento area as well as the Tahoe area no more stay at home orders but there under 8% and still they let them get out from stay at home orders.
In short give me a break. I will do what I want to do and where I want to go to and still do in a safe matter . This stay at home orders is not going to work with me

This is so confusion. The Contra Costa County Heath Dashboard website shows capacity is 8.5%, not 4.7. http://Www.coronavirus.cchealth.org/hospital

Yolanda, it’s a rolling no. I just looked at the website which was updated on 1/12/21 at 11:30 AM. It shows 5% for CCC and 4.8% for Bay Area.

The County website now shows 5% of ICU beds available in Contra Costa. It also shows 4.8% available across the entire Bay Area.
https://www.coronavirus.cchealth.org/hospital

The 4.7 is a bay area average. Like all stats there is a final average run using all data. That is how stats work.

They went back to reporting the State calculated number which is an adjustment downwards from the real capacity numbers if more than 30% of ICU capacity is COVID patients.

If the hospitals do not have staff for the ICU beds , they count as not available

The sheep will be sheared soon enough

And miraculously your children will be given to predators legally

Yay you won

Now generations of children can be abused

Thanks to dem voters

Oh glorious day

Biden will be ecstatic and giddy with all his new toys to play with

People were up in arms over accusing Michael Jackson

But Biden can now legally do as he wants

How the dem voters must feel overwhelmed with joy to help the predators

For generations to come

Children being abused legally under the guise that of Covid

I wonder where Oprah is

Hard to believe she approves of this as a dem voter

Sad times ahead or rather sick

The people have willingly relinquished their freedom of choice.

The only option remaining is to comply.

This is a way to get the population to be hooked on the government hand outs and then take them away creating so many jobless and homeless that the general population will grasp at ANY new policies just so they won’t starve to death. Our rights and freedoms are slowly being taken away by people(Lawmakers and Politicians) that don’t give a rat’s ass about us.
They wait until the last minute to pass legislation to save all the unemployment extensions and give us a stimulus of $600.Then our idiot President waits too long to sign it and we lose our unemployment and have to reopen our claims which takes 3+ weeks with no money.
$600 to take my job away and screw my life into the ground??
When does it end? Now there is a new virus mutation that’s much more contagious than regular COVID we are told.
TRY TESTING EVERYBODY and quarantine the people that test positive !
Get the vaccine to people as fast as possible.
Then open our lives back up and let us earn money to pay rent and buy food! Before we revolt and throw all the politicians out on their asses. Let them see how much fun it is waiting on hold for 6 hrs trying to get a hold of the unemployment people just to feed your family and survive.
