Nation’s Hamburgers, located at 4600 Clayton Rd. in Concord, will soon get a long overdue makeover.
The proposed project involves renovating the outside of the existing building.
It’s unknown when they plan to start.

Just to remind everybody, this building was originally built in 1988 as an Original Mel’s Diner, which explains the 1950’s diner architecture. I remember eating there right after it opened that summer.
It became Mel’s later on, but when it first opened it was Doc’s.
As long as I can get a piece of pie, once in awhile, while the makeover happens,…yeah!
Like the new look to freshen it up.

Nation’s actually looks better than most buildings on Clayton Rd. But that’s not saying much.
Haha! It does look pretty cool for Clayton Rd. It was designed with a bit of character and it’s comfortable. Too bad.

I cant stand this place, its such low quality and the employees dont care about cleaning the place, I stopped going many years ago as they would always mess up my order. I like Nations but recommend the better quality of the Pleasant HIll location.
Hopefully with the building redo they get some better quality employees

Worked at nations for a while started me at 16 great company to work for . Great benefits as well

The day before Thanksgiving they were doing a robust pie business. They had planned ahead with huge inventory and an express lane. What a great way to help last minute shoppers while keeping their business alive during the shutdown.
Sadly there were bums accosting patrons in the parking lot. Clayton road needs a makeover, and it has nothing to do with architecture.
Never ever been to a Nation’s and have no desire to try it. Although I occasionally will eat a fast food burger, it is usually McDonalds, use to go to Burger Kings, but haven’t in years. Best real burger use to be Perry’s on Union Street in San Francisco. Took my relatives there when visiting from Denmark, so they could taste a real American Hamburger. Also loved Hamburger Mary’s.
P.S. How does a make of a fast food burger joint turn political??
Hanne, you might want to try Nation’s hamburger. They are much bigger and more traditional than the fast food places. (And more expensive)

As far as I’m concerned they can close it down and save money on a remodel. The food and service have been going down for years. Burgers are not the same quality of meat and the size has changed. The last 3 phone in orders were wrong from not including grilled onions, tons of mayo when they were asked to hold the mayo, no cheese on a cheeseburger and missing fries in the order. Employees behind the counter didn’t care. Stopped going there over 3 years ago. Pies were still good when I stopped going there!
I haven’t been there since the Mayor’s story (2007ish)regarding how someone named Ricky from the old homeless 13 gang threw the ketchup and mustard bins around the lobby, screamed at the customers and then headed over to BK to do something unspeakable in the drive thru…..Ahh the Claycord memories….
I haven’t been to a Nation’s in a long time. But always enjoyed the food, especially the pies. I prefer the 50’s style building, just clean it up.
The old design is 100% more attractive to my eye. Well-maintained vintage will always be more interesting than ANOTHER sleek modern building.
Someone probably got a degree in architecture to design that boring so called upgrade.
I like the old building better. Its good to be in a lace of times gone by when things were different. Very relaxing. I think there hamburgers and fries are the best. The people who serve are nice. What’s to complain about?
Other fast-food restaurants on Clayton have been remodeled in the same bland style. It’s disappointing that Nation’s is giving up their iconic diner-era look for this generic appearance.
That is sad.
Agreed – the existing building gets my vote. Keep it.
Also: is the new design “protestor proof”? The lefties may declare that unfair…

New design makes me think they should be selling tires and auto parts in there.
Take existing design and remake entrance to match rest of what’s there now.

As it is, it at least looks like a diner. Even though it was constructed for a different owner its suited to Nations. The new design seems just generic and boxy.
It was an Old “Hudson gas station” back in the day.
They could’ve saved a lot of money if they’d have asked all of us. Sprucing up is all it probably does need. A deep cleaning, new tables, change the seats and/or covers, surfaces, new floor, paint, whatever kitchen equipment needs replacing or whatever, and it’s good to go. Or leave it alone even. Focus on the food and service. The renderings are just another formulaic generic eyesore on Clayton Road. The street is a magnate for them. And I’m with Antler, it does look like a tire shop or an auto parts store. It’s not just the unappealing color scheme, though that is not helping. Of course they’d have to charge more for the food. It’s a dumb idea.
