QUESTION: Do you think kids will go back to in-person learning on campus during the 2020/2021 school year?
Talk about it….
We don’t know yet.
This question is dependent upon people taking this virus seriously and doing what is needed.
Even Trump, in private, admits how bad and how contangious the virus is…
I guess if his supporters don’t believe him and only listen to his public rehtoric – then it is unlikely schools will be open full time for in person learning.
Plot twist…From what I hear Trump parents don’t want to send their kids back to school right now. They are quite happy doing home schooling until such a time as they are not liberal America hating indoctrination centers. Not to mention school shootings are way down under the current administration. I can tell you they sure don’t want them going in masks so maybe they do think for themselves unlike democrats.
I really, really wish people across the country would take the need to stay socially distant and wear masks seriously.
Um, there are not many Trump supporters in CA, certainly not many in CCC. And most of the Covid deaths in the US are in blue states. This isn’t a morality play.
But also, guess what? There already are kids going to school in person. Private schools. And there are childcare places open. As there were in NYC at the height of the outbreak, for kids of frontline workers. It can be done. You just have to do it.
Tell that to all the Trump supporters honking their horns on highway 24 in Walnut Creek today. California will be voting for Trump with out a doubt. I don’t know anyone voting for the opposition…Whoever that be come November
A minority of voters out of 40 million people is still enough to make a good-sized car procession. But there’s no way CA goes for Trump in the election. Not even close.
That is not the only indicator. Time will tell. 95% of California is red already so it’s not really a stretch.
Well, let’s see…
two kinda local large school districts have already said no… That kind of set a standard…
My guess is no.
It will reopen under a strict regimen, that no child should have to deal with.
Homeschooling will look way more enticing!
It would be fantastic if MDUSD opened up! It’s very tricky to keep these kids entertained on a computer for the next 9 months. It is also very annoying that these teachers cut there class times short. For example, my daughter is suppose to be in a class for
Yikes accidentally clicked submit on my laptop to soon! Any who she is suppose to have 80 mins with each teacher and two of her teachers just end after about 20-30mins of class.
Winnie The Pooh What school and grade?
@Rob
Try as you might to blame everything on Trump, this is 100% about the teacher’s union and what THEY decide.
The CSU system is doing distance learning through the spring semester, except for a few isolated cases such as labs where distance learning isn’t workable. The in-person labs and other similar types are under strict infection control protocols. Most labs are being done “virtually” though.
As a high school teacher, I can tell you that no one is more anxious to get back into the classroom that we are.
But the fact is if it’s not safe, it’s not safe.
As much as I’d like to return before the new year, I seriously doubt we’ll be back before next August.
Should they…yes. Can be done safely. Will they…50/50. It’s been a learning process for everyone, but we have to start applying balance & commonsense. What if the vaccine isn’t available for another year, 2 years? What if it cannot be tolerated by 50% of the population…or takes 5 years for everyone in the world to be dosed? What if there is a Covid-20? Allowing the agendas of small partisan groups to dictate, needs to and fortunately is, coming to an end..
I hear from a reliable source, the Teachers Union is using in-class instructions as a bargining chip for additional cash. Given most School Districts are broke, no in class. This will be a catalyst for Private Schools.
Left to the democrats, I don’t think schools would ever open up nor would any other entity. I think it’s a plot for them to bring socialism in on us well we’re all locked down.
I always thought my brother was crazy for home schooling his kids. Not anymore. The support and assignments they receive through their program has been much better and meaningful than what my kids are getting through our local school. I am thinking about dropping enrollment in December and going to Home School. If everyone did this the teachers and kids would be back in the classrooms.
Yeah, but you know something? The teachers unions have already pushed through a bill tying per-student funding to last year’s enrollments, so charter schools that do home study programs can’t take on more students without dropping their per capita funding. A nice little poison pill. We won’t teach your kids well but we will keep all our funding, thank you very much? (Notice I’m blaming the unions and districts, not individual teachers, btw.)
My kid learns more from their tablet than they have from Zoom classes so far!!! I’m not sure I want other kids teaching my kid it’s okay to fragoff during Zoom classes much less anything else! I thought that’s why we have teachers not breakout rooms? I can’t wait for the school choice bill to get EO’d and online schools to begin enrolling again!!!!
I would like to see the schools stay closed. It is not safe for the teachers – and it is not safe for the mental health (or the future) of our students.
We are not getting what we paid for.
For the tremendous amount of funding public schools require – we can give students a far better education.
Parents need to organize, and figure out a new way. Teachers need more control in providing curriculum, and we need to release all the administrators from serving as police officers, attorney’s, and psychiatric counselors.
It is painful, but necessary – otherwise we have lost another generation to the dumbing down (and agenda driven) political circus (better known as our dead and dying public schools).
This has been the glorious surprise gift of Covid 19 – We can see that we are treated like sheep – and we don’t need to follow each other off the cliff. We can awake from this stupor now – and regain control of our lives, and the future lives of upcoming generations.
Retake public schools NOW. Grandfather in the retired educators, and create an educational system that works towards meeting the needs of what skills are necessary to survive into the future. Maybe these skills are more hands on, and practical?. It will take a citizen’s advisory group willing to do the research (without a financial stake in the outcome of the study).
We need to admit that we are going the wrong way.
It will take the bravery of a few educators, and dedicated parents – willing to throw off the yoke of this (globalist run) toxic public school system .
Go forward – Brave Ones.
No…..
A look back in time might give us a clue. History tells us that democrats have been against educating their slaves.
Obviously the school system failed to teach you about the Southern Strategy
Good point Law Abiding Citizen! Basically slavery is still here, it just very well disguised. Problem is most people are ether don’t see it or fine with it.
They start with mask mandate and soon you are not going to be allowed to drive you car, because you can kill someone (do your part and save lives) or even worse cause a climate change. With that speed of loosing out constitutional rights and liberties in exchange for ‘promise of safety and long life’ we going to end up in dark ages much earlier than climate change comes.
Yes if we can get bye spring break without a major spike in new cases of COVID -19.
No, I don’t expect we will be back in school this school year. And you know what? That’s ok. We are thriving and loving distance learning. I’m thinking of how we can realistically do this forever with our kids. When things open up more we can do play dates and fun classes for enrichment, but I’m sick of the public school standard. Even a highly rated public school. And private school is too expensive for multiple children!!!
We homeschool; I am a fan. And I would love to see more people break free from the public school system and the two-income trap. But the teachers unions pull all the strings in Sacramento, and CA real estate alone makes a stay at home parent unlikely. I don’t see it happening – instead the school system keeps all its funding and makes no changes, while denying kids the education they are entitled to by the state constitution. Public schools could open tomorrow in CCC with minimal risk to teachers if schools were run with a fraction of the competence we should be able to expect. Mask the teachers, protect the most vulnerable employees, open windows and/or put a dang HEPA air purifier in each classroom. Parents should still have the option of doing distance learning. Masks for older kids. Outdoor classes when weather and air quality permit. Sure, that’s a lot of logistics, but so is going online! It involves some expense, but so does providing laptops and hotspots to kids who need them when you go online
If a campus doesn’t have enough space, contract with a local venue that isn’t allowed to open right now.
Does everybody not remember all the freakout news stories a few weeks ago as schools opened across the South and many other states? Take a look at their Covid numbers now. It’s a story when you can scare people; when things go ok, no story. This isn’t theoretical: schools are open in other places that had more community spread than we do (TX, FL). And they are ok. We just live in a state where the bureaucracies run things for the benefit of their employees, not the public. Teachers unions, firefighter’s unions, the pilots unions driving CalFire policy, CalFire in general, police unions… the list goes on.
Maybe…Can you predict the future?
Nope. Their parents may drop them off, but the kids are going to hop on BART and take off for Berkely or SF. 😉
November 4. Yeah, I know it’s a Wednesday.
