UPDATE: BART System Closed Until Further Notice Due To Computer Issues

BART is saying the system and its stations are closed until further notice Sunday and is telling passengers to seek other options.

The agency had earlier announced that stations would not open at 8 a.m. as scheduled “Due to a systemwide computer problem.”

The announcement comes just a day before the transit district had been scheduled to increase the frequency of trains to serve increased weekday ridership. The system had planned to have trains on some lines running every 15 minutes during weekday commute hours.

UPDATE: All stations in the East Bay are currently open.

Michael September 14, 2020 - 5:53 AM - 5:53 AM

People who need Bart so they can work to buy food for their family, they care. What an idiot you are.

Dorothy September 13, 2020 - 10:32 AM - 10:32 AM

Wonder what virus got into their systems or did someone push/pull the wrong gizmo?

Norcon September 13, 2020 - 10:42 AM - 10:42 AM

Congratulations Bay Area Rapid Transit. You are the WORST public rail system in the United States and you don’t even operate 24 hours a day.

Sure, go spend 5 billion tax payer dollars on a “New BART Headquarter Building in Oakland”. That is exactly what you need to improve your pathetic performance service levels.

Don’t expect property owners to taxes ourselves to bail you out (Thank You Prop 13 of 1978!! The BEST proposition EVER in California). I would love to see BART go bankrupt.

As my father used to say in the 1970’s when BART opened the Daly City-Concord line: “Pave over all the BART tracks and just run buses on it. It’s less (tax payer) money, quicker and more reliable service”

Perhaps the BART workers will strike, just because they can to get more people to ride the system.

Computer issues. Who ever thought things could run efficiently on computers?

The Fearless Spectator September 13, 2020 - 11:36 AM - 11:36 AM

BART needs a complete management transfusion. Maybe Musk should be offered the job, he’d straighten it out toot sweet.

Imagine our money system was all digital like some in power want. No cash back with your bank card in Nevada as of yesterday.

Should have been light rail which is the lowest cost mass transit system. Oh but you would have lost all those neat trails people walk and run on throughout the Bay Area which were old trolley systems. BART was one of these “dream” systems of the 1960s that became a nightmare.

The Mamba September 13, 2020 - 11:56 AM - 11:56 AM

BART’s still around huh?

nytemuvr September 13, 2020 - 12:13 PM - 12:13 PM

Now there’s your “systemic” problem!

caskydiver September 13, 2020 - 12:21 PM - 12:21 PM

BART is a joke and is terribly mismanaged.

chuckie the troll September 13, 2020 - 3:59 PM - 3:59 PM

Another one of those “If a tree falls in the forest and no one is there to hear it, did it really make a sound?” moments.

I see BART as a classic case of a Program taking control of those it is supposed to serve. The only reliable thing BART provides is more tax increases.

Anybody got any 5 1/4 inch floppy discs?

WC Resident September 13, 2020 - 5:17 PM - 5:17 PM

BART predates the existence of floppy discs. They likely boot their machines by keying a small program on the the front panel which reads the full boot loader off a paper tape.

One of my early home computers had dual 8-inch floppy diskette drives. The sounds it made are still burned into my memory.

Lambie September 13, 2020 - 5:47 PM - 5:47 PM

More likely key punch cards lol

Barbosa September 13, 2020 - 7:56 PM - 7:56 PM

Hey @WC Resident

You had a home computer with 8 inch floppies too??!!

Woohoo.

Had a Cromemco Z80 S100 bus running CP/M off of dual 8 inch floppies back in the day.

We oughta chat.

ilovepopcorn September 13, 2020 - 5:02 PM - 5:02 PM

That is too bad for folks depending on BART. Unacceptable to me. Transportation systems do not stop. Too bad with all the money we have we cannot come up with a great rapid transit system. Like Europe has so many. Plus theirs are clean and beautifully designed by artists and engineers. We have an antiquated broken down nasty germ infested disgusting BART mess. I resent having to depend on BART for going anywhere. I believe we have so much corruption in all of most systems. No matter if it is private enterprise or government businesses. We have no morals here in our country anymore. GRRRRRRR.

Jimmy September 13, 2020 - 5:29 PM - 5:29 PM

Where are the homeless in Europe? Seriously. How are they kept off the transit systems? Maybe we need those answers here in the U.S?
And, where are the mentally ill in Europe? Are they all housed?

Lambie September 13, 2020 - 5:51 PM - 5:51 PM

They probably actually arrest people that break the law.

Chris September 13, 2020 - 9:26 PM - 9:26 PM

Would it be possible to ask the custodians to clean the bart trains? I rode it last week into the city and the cars were filthy at 11am. They had one side of the gates sealed off but I still watched numerous people jump the gates right in front of the agent.

Kirkwood September 14, 2020 - 10:15 AM - 10:15 AM

Even if there was a full time custodian on every train it would be trashed continuously, even by “nice” people. It is the mindset of “city” people.

Ash September 13, 2020 - 9:46 PM - 9:46 PM

systemic? must be white privilege… LOL

Barbie Girl September 13, 2020 - 10:13 PM - 10:13 PM

You haven’t seen the streets of Paris recently. About 8,000 sleep on the streets. Quite a few are migrants who have just set up tents along the Champs-Elysees It looks like San Francisco. .
