The state of California does not have the financial wherewithal to afford the White House’s plan to extend expanded unemployment benefits during the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, Gov. Gavin Newsom said Monday.
Newsom said in his daily coronavirus briefing Monday that the state would have to cover 25 percent of the costs associated with a $400 per week unemployment insurance payment, as outlined in a memorandum President Donald Trump announced over the weekend.
That 25 percent would amount to the state spending between $700 million and $3 billion in taxpayer funds per week. The state would have to make sharp cuts to public services to foot that bill, Newsom said.
“The state does not have an identified resource of $700 million per week that we haven’t already obliged,” he said.
While the state received billions from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act passed by Congress in March, Newsom said all of that funding has already been allocated.
“We’re going to need the federal government to provide the support, that 25 percent, or we are at peril of being in a position where we’re making false commitments, false promises to millions of Californians that, ultimately, we simply cannot meet,” Newsom said.
THEN OPEN THE STATE SO PEOPLE CAN GO BACK TO WORK. THIS ISN’T ROCKET SCIENCE. AND, YES – I’M SHOUTING AT NEWSOM. HE NEEDS TO BE SHOUTED AT. AND VOTED OUT.
And then the virus quickly spreads. And hospitals are overwhelmed. And people are out of work because they can’t work and have coronavirus at the same time. Then what? You’re the type of person that would be the first one to blame Newsom if everyone went back to work and suddenly you were out of a job because some coworker/employee made you sick.

Workers paid into the unemployment insurance system, as did their employers, to ensure workers would be covered at times like these. What happened to that money? It should have been invested and making money for the State to cover “novel” emergencies. The State has proven it isn’t prepared for the “big one’ that they are always nagging us about, or any other emergency situation causing massive unemployment for that matter. This is an utter disgrace, and Newsom “owns it,’ twerp that he is. This is his fault and no one else’s. Recall isn’t good enough for him. I believe he has committed criminal offenses in his inability to handle the emergency effectively, and his utter neglect in making decisions protective of the electorate in this crisis.
Newsom entered office with a 26 BILLION dollar surplus. Don’t tell me it’s gone! What is he saving it for … something worse? He might want to rethink his “Welcome to California Abortion,” his offer to perform abortion for anyone wanting one right here in California, and his “No Tax On Tampax,: which generated revenue for the State. Both likely his wife’s ideas. Very generous, at our expense. And, his “No Executions On My Watch” will be beside the point when prisoners start killing and eating each other because the State can no longer afford to feed them. The man has no plan, has had no plan from the beginning, is pursuing a “feel good” liberal plan of attack that is totally unrealistic, created in a Fantasyland of liberal drama and pathos with no basis in reality.
…and here’s where the lockdown REALLY begins to bite us in the posterior. We need to end it. Months ago. Instead, we’re expanding it. 15 more counties made it onto the crap list, leaving 7 that aren’t in the entire state. Once you’re on, you never get off. Bye, bye jobs! Bye, bye, tax revenue! He has invested 400 million dollars into undocumented people so he can get votes for the democratic party. that money with all good intents should have been used to build this state before investing in those that will suck it dry. I’m not saying the Dems are doing much better– but you didn’t see Pelosi et al eliminating pandemic response teams at the beginning of the crisis. The Republican response to COVID has been actively malicious and incomptent, while the Dem response has been merely incompetent. It’s utterly pathetic that our choice has boiled down to whether you want your incompetence with a side of evil or straight up.
The proper response should have been to bolster our reponse at the federal level, to pass some form of Universal Basic Income back in March to last through the pandemic so that ALL Americans could survive and maybe keep their homes, screen or quarantine travelers until they could be tested and cleared. A nationwide two-three week lockdown a la Bay Area to give time to marshall resources. Then reopening at a national pace, giving support to states that needed it.
Locally, reopening resonably quickly to generate enough tax revenue to recruit *paid* contact tracers. Reasonably strict enforcement of social distancing regulations. Fines to businesses flouting capacity and employee safety standards. Eviction protection for the duration of the pandemic, increased funding for hospitals and doctors to make sure the public stays healthy– not just COVID-free. Restrict large indoor gatherings like church services, conventions, movie theaters, etc.
All layers of government and both parties have failed us spectacularly.

Looks like the severe lockdown was a disaster. It didn’t prevent outbreaks but it did ruin countless businesses (and therefore their owners) and resulted in a huge drop in tax revenues, which will affect every city, county, and the state for a long time to come. All we did was delay the curve, not prevent the pandemic.
So now we’re running out of money. There will need to be steep cuts no matter what. I think with universal mask wearing, people can go back to work and we can keep the transmission rates manageable.
