Dickey’s BBQ Pit on Ygnacio Valley Rd. in Concord has permanently closed, according to employees. Their Concord location has also been removed from the company’s website.

Dickey’s signs have already been removed, and a Filipino restaurant called Berto’s will be opening soon, according to new signage on the building.

Dickey’s was in business at that location since 2011.

I never tried Dickey’s. Does the chain still exist? The Fremont location is long gone.

That said, I’m looking forward to trying Bertos. I love Filipino food 🙂

Yes to Lumpia. Maybe they’ll even have balute on a stick! 😋

Yes, there are locations in Antioch, Vallejo, Napa, Fairfield and Vacaville. Not bad for chain food, although you can do better at a real bbq place.

They also had around seven locations close a few years ago around Sacramento and one someplace by Tracy.

Sad to see bbq go, it was a great quick lunch. However.. YASSS!!!! FILIPINO FOOD FOR THE WIN!!!!! LUMPIA ❤️❤️❤️

Too bad it’s not an Olive Garden

I know this is an unpopular opinion of mine (among Claycord at least), but Olive Garden is mediocre at best. Yuck

@Claycord Native….But Olive Garden has some of the best “Grilled Cornsnake on a Stick” you’re likely to find anywhere else, a local delicacy here.

I went there 3 times in the past 6 years … yuck, yuck & yuck… then I gave up.

Same here, they lost quality ,,,….

Not surprised. I found them to be very unsanitary the last time I went.

Once was enough for me. Poor quality.

Same here. I ate there once and couldn’t believe what was growing in my mouth the next morning. Ordered a pulled pork sandwich. The guy took the meat out of a bag he had microwaved and started “massaging” it (that’s the only way I can describe it) on a cutting board he had just used to cut up something for the customer in front of me without even running a wet rag over it. Who is authorizing opening restaurants in store fronts where the only running water is in the bathroom? This place was a public health disaster waiting to happen and I’d be suspicious of anything that opened there because it looks like there is no sink, no kitchen, just running water from the sink in the bathroom and fridges and microwaves.

Ditto. I went there once when they opened and it wasn’t good. Gave them another try and just as bad. Have never gone back! No loss here!

Well there goes the neighborhood!

Kinda funny it’s right near a Pet Food Express.

What’s that supposed to mean “not impressed”? How does that affect the neighborhood?

@Not Impressed…. Careful how you answer Manny, he sounds like Robert Conrad daring you to knock an Eveready battery off his shoulder.

And it wasn’t funny when Dickey’s was obviously near it too? Smh look at this person sterotyping

@Not Impressed Your an idiot!

Almost Famous wins today’s “Your an Idiot” Irony award!

Yew Peeple our stoopid…. LoL!

yew lucky yew cute!

Berto’s? Is that going to be like a lechon pit?

Dickey’s once was an all-time favorite back in my days I grew up in Texas. In Texas, you received Texas-sized portions, huge mounds of beef, sausage, and sides but here they gave you minimal amounts with huge prices and the quality was inferior. I was so excited to share this experience with my wife but was completely let down when I took her and never went back ever again. I am not surprised to see them go, the Filipino place will do fantastic as long as they can keep it clean, think Jolly-Bees, great food but not very sanitary

A Starbread Bakery would have been good too!

Their señorita bread is fantastic!

Agree 100%. I was so excited when I learned Dickey’s was coming in that space. I thought, Finally!! excellent BBQ!! but it wasn’t nearly the same as the Texas restaurants, at all. Glad they’re gone because they did not do BBQ properly.

Many, many restaurants will close because of the virus simply because their overhead is so high that the idea of reducing places to eat just does not make sense from a profit point of view. I, for one, stopped eating in restaurants years ago because they are such a nuisance. When I’m hungry I want food now not a relationship with the server!

I prefer my own cooking. I use the internet for new recipes and ideas!
The best restaurant is at my house. Other people do like my cooking. I do make exception to Wendy’s hamburgers once in a while. That is it. I only go to the drive through.

Dickeys was a good place, I remember when it first opened up and the manager was running the place with his wife and daughter, if I remember correctly. Within a year I never saw any of them again and within two years the place went WAAAAY down hill. Sad to see it go but I’m surprised it took this long tbh

@Jay
Yes the franchise owner husband and wife and daughter and I think uncle also were great back then, but he decided to devote all their time to his church he is pastor at in Antioch and their daughter went to CCC hospital in Mtz as a cook I think.
The next franchise owner was a family from India that never had seen BBQ and had no clue
That was a train wreck and the fall began with the great employees left leaving for other local businesses. When the Dickies in PH closed that manager and her daughter came over but it was too late it was no turning it around and they lost another long time employee.
I ate there alot thru all the people there were good days and not so good.
I won’t miss them as we now only eat Slowhand BBQ in MTZ or PH. Won’t go anywhere else they are the best.

Dickey’s just isn’t great Q…

I never cared for Dickey’s because of their sauce.

Good BBQ doesnt need sauce so take that as maybe Dickies needed it? Lol

Dickeys is a pit… eat local. Kinders for the win!!

Kinders is trash. I wouldn’t even feed that crap to my dog.

@realbbq

You are honestly the first person beside myself to speak ill of Kinders. I for one think they’re just kind of “meh” and the prices are a bit high. Most people LOVE em tho.

Kinders is okay, but people that think ball tip they push on their sandwiches is a good cut of meat…it’s not, it’s about the lowest on the food chain for choices on the steer.
I don’t eat there much unless nothing else is open or I happen to be driving by and need to use a bathroom I’ll drop in.

Challenge Accepted!
Other than your own; of course, name your favorite Q-Joints!

#1 overall pick: LC’s, Kansas MO

Locally (kinda) JR’s, Sacramento CA

I’m not a fan of Kinder’s either.
I am a fan of Slow Hand, either in Pleasant Hill or the one in Martinez.

HUGE portions, and super good BBQ. Fancy beer menu also.

Slow Hand in Pleasant Hill is AWFUL. Went there once, never again 🤮

Too sad to see these places going out of business.
Their food was good but way over priced.

If Filipino food was made gluten free and dairy free I would be elated. My feet are so tired from home making everything. Did you catch that Bertos? 😬 gluten free and dairy free. 😬

Back when it was the first owners, it was obvious they had pride in their franchise. We enjoyed the weekly meal deals a couple times a month, became friends with the daughter, swapped toddler stories with her. Always enjoyed a free cone after dinner. After they sold it we went back once, had a terrible experience with the food, whole place felt filthy, and never went back.

This was one of the worst places ever. I can’t believe it survived as long as it did. It was also very dirty.

We tried Dickies when it first opened. Never went back. Trying to give the chain a fair chance, I tried another Dickies (in Livermore). Nope same mediocre food. I’m not surprised it’s gone. I AM surprised that it lasted so long. Want a decent BBQ chain in there? Bring in an Armadillo Willy’s. That’s what I was hoping for all those 9 years ago when I heard a BBQ joint was coming in. Such a letdown with Dickies. Oh well. Life will go on, and I will try the new place coming in.

So I had a love-hate relationship with Dickey’s. I was always interested in having good BBQ, but have never found a place that has good BBQ that is nearby.

Dickey’s was okay. To be upfront, I never used their BBQ sauce, which I agree wasn’t the best.

Now, just about every time I went, I later had an upset stomach. This is the primary reason I went so infrequently. But I eventually stopped going all together.

My concern with them–
While they wore gloves, I always thought they should change gloves between orders– which they didn’t. Kinder’s washes their hands and changes gloves between every order. Dickeys employees would wear their gloves to the bitter end– handling food, running the tablet register, and answering the phone. Dickey’s food handling was always suspect. I’d see them pull items out in cellophane, and cross contaminate between different types of meat and not clean their cutting board. Worst of all, one time someone who was making orders, wiped her nose with her gloves on, then made my order, which absolutely disgusted me. I didn’t take the food and I never returned. For a while there, it seemed as if they were having trouble getting people to work there. I remember one guy complaining that he didn’t have anyone to help him.

Anyway, I’m surprised they lasted as long as they did. I would have returned if they had better food handling practices.

Seems like a tough time to open a new place.

Good riddance. That place was absolute garbage. I had a horrible experience there. The food was gristly and overrated.

TBH this place was trash.

original owners were great…things went downhill after they sold.

So glad I decided not to open a restaurant in Claycord county.

Toooooo many grumpy people. And mean.

If the food made you sick, unless it was food poisoning, could it be you have food allergies, or like a lot of older people, gastro problems.

I’ve had pizza at popular pizza places, but don’t go anymore, and I don’t put down their pizza because I think it’s too salty. We all have different tastes.

I also stopped reading yelp reviews when the reviewers start their dinners with drinks. Talk about numbing the taste buds. 🤣

Bring back Aladino’s Pizza! 😋

The management change killed them. It was predictable.

I was never impressed by Dickey’s BBQ. Seems like a really bad time to be opening up any kind of restaurant, but good luck.
