Contra Costa District Attorney Diana Becton issued a new policy for officers within the DA’s Office to ban the use of the carotid hold technique (chokeholds).
The ban is effective as of June 23, 2020.
“The use of the carotid hold has proven to be an unnecessary and deadly police technique and will not be used by members of my Investigative Unit. The risks associated with this technique far outweigh any potential benefit. This important policy change reflects a positive move forward in police community relations and reinforces the continuous need to focus on de-escalation, training, and tactics,” stated Contra Costa County District Attorney Diana Becton.
Floyd and the other guy would probably both be alive if the police had used a choke hold. Oh well the DA knows police combat best.
Once again she plays to the narrative…. Anyone with any common knowledge knows that the proper technique is NOT a “Chokehold”!
Gheeze
I think this can all be solved with a hug. Most of these criminals don’t really want a violent physical altercation with law enforcement.
They just really need a hug., And maybe a participation trophy….
Some possible outcomes, more use of lethal force or more workers comp claims.
This bend over backwards PC krap is going to get law enforcement people hurt or killed.
How about a policy where we actually keep people in jail when they commit a crime? And when people resist arrest, take a weapon off of an officer, etc…then they are trying to commit suicide by cop.
BTW- Does anyone think drunk driving is a victimless crime? We were hit by a repeat offender. I know people who have been seriously injured or lost loved ones to drunk drivers. So ‘letting them off’ is letting them harm someone else.
I don’t think even the serial drunken drivers think it’s a victimless crime. It’s a dreadful thing to drive drunk and endanger all the innocents on the road. Personally I think the ABC should be raised to maybe .1 and the penalties should be higher.
But all of Newsome’s pets coming out of San Quentin will still get to use choke holds, right?
We wouldn’t want to infringe on their rights.
One, it’s NOT a “chokehold”. It is a “The carotid control hold”, and the windpipe is not what is restricted, it’s the flow of blood to the brain. It’s a VERY valuable tool for officers dealing with individuals who are combative. Congratulations PC police, if you take this away, now it’s straight to taser or baton time.
Dear combative criminals – Enjoy your bruised and broken bones vs. waking up cuffed in the patrol car with a slight headache.
It’s not being politically correct, it’s stopping racism by officers and departments training officers poorly. I have witnessed a great deal of training at both the county and city levels and there is more assumption about guilt and danger than other premises. Does this absolutely remove it or the previously mentioned, only use as last resort? As a police officer, you can’t figure out that people who are handcuffed and face down, is good enough to wait for help? You have to restrict their necks at the same time? I hope they weed those kinds of I’ll equipped idiots OUT of county employment. Go get a job as a bouncer.
This feels like that county announcement when the dept. ordered testing long term care facilities. That feeling of, “Wait, this wasn’t banned already?”
Well, welcome to the early 2000’s, Contra Costa. Nice to see you in the 21st century!
Anyway, a positive–if belated– move.
Lizzee, do you know the difference between a carotid control hold and a chokehold?
Anything to get reelected.
With a new wave of criminals soon to be released in the Bay Area our Governor has made it clear that we all have to be our own first responders from now on.
This has already manifested itself in massive new gun sales. People who don’t even like guns are buying them because they refuse to be victims. RGR, SWBI, and VSTO are all at 52 week highs. There’s your sign.
Quit taking away tools from our brave police officers.
If you look at autopsy and toxicology, Floyd died of a heart attack caused by fentanyl + meth + excited delirium + series artery blockage. Not the way he was restrained.
The celeb autopsy from that 85 year old makes claims based on the video and not on the status of the cadaver, which basically makes it trash to be regarded.
