The BART Board of Directors, at its June 25 meeting, voted to award a $58 million Progressive Design-Build contract to Turner Construction Company and RIM Architecture to design and build the new BART Headquarters at 2150 Webster Street in Oakland.
BART purchased the building on December 10, 2019.
BART’s Office of Civil Rights through its Small Business Support Services Program offered extensive outreach and assistance to small, local businesses throughout the process including virtual matchmaking sessions held at the request of the District by each of the three pre-qualified proposers.
“We are excited that the winning team has committed to exceed our small business participation goal”, says Maceo Wiggins, Director of BART’s Office of Civil Rights. “As we transition into project delivery, we’re focused on community engagement, creating opportunities for firms to work on our new headquarters, and providing support services to ensure success for firms working on the project. It’s important that we do our part to support Oakland and the regional economic recovery and this is a major project that can help us achieve that goal.”
Work under the contract will include, but not be limited to, furnishing, management coordination, professional services, labor, equipment, materials and other services to perform the design and construction of the new BART Headquarters.
The $142 million purchase of the building with closing costs and $85 million in interior construction has been financed by a 25-year sales tax bond.
The new BART Headquarters is 244,287 square feet accommodating 1,300 employees. BART is scheduled to move in Spring 2021.
WHY does bart headquarters need 1,300 employees ?
Just how many layers of management are there ?
They need a lot even for one station. So choo choo and woo.
What a slap in the face to taxpayers who will be seeing reduced services from cities, the county, and the state across the board.
Defund BART.
BART needs to:
1. Get its outrageously high labor costs under control. Next contract cycle the board must stand up to the unions and to not cave if BART employees strike.
2. Do something about homelessness, filth, crime and fare-evasions. All of these have led to many people that I know driving their cars to work instead of taking BART.
No discrimination there, no siree…….
BART takes a page out of the PG&E “diversity” handbook.
I won’t mention that the Female owned Tyndale clothing supplier screwed them the first time around.
bart should be sold and privatized.
Tokyo Metro Co., Ltd is a private company operating at a profit. Last year having profits of 61 Billion YEN in 2019, that would be $560 million.

That’s Japan a whole other pond.
You are correct, it’s the only way to straighten this money pit out.
This makes sense because as a publicly funded entity, BART is subject to all the Title VI regulations that reward inefficiency. Or, like Reagan did with the Traffic Controller strike while he was President, if BART ever strikes again, they all need to be replaced by non-union workers, to get it back on track.
Senator Stephen Glazer ran on the promise that he would clean up BART and never allow them to strike, again, bringing the Bay Area to its knees the way they did last time. We haven’t heard a peep out of him on it since elected, which pretty much seems to indicate he’s been bought off by the unions.
They will never give up their biggest tax payer skimming money laundering operation.
Not sure BART will even be around too much longer…
here we go another self absorbed transit payed by our taxes bending over the gov and board and city councils taking what they want and begging for more
so they can buy a building an renovate and of course give bonuses …all on our tab
graciously given by newscum yet again handing out our money like an atm
to corrupt union services
and only catering business to those of color
used to be that was racist
i mean are dem voters the 1% because they sure are cavalier with our tax dollars i mean
really voting for a gas tax after voting for the highspeed train scam and keeping the so called temporary measure Q tax and voting in the soda tax ….all for what so the unions and boards and councils and politicians can all get rich
wow nice long con job there ……
good thing you keep voting them in
and throwing money away
wow
Bart should concentrate on being a Public Transportation Company and let other agencies deal with all the other stuff.
If Bart could ever become a real Transportation Company, perhaps then they could delve into other social objectives.
I keep looking at the for-profit PG&E. That hasn’t worked out so well.
Bart needs better managers in the form experienced and proven Transportation Managers, not social workers.
Are there watchdogs to make sure relatives of BART managers/employees haven’t chosen for these contracts? And I agree with previous posters that BART should be defunded, sold and privatized and the amount of employees they will house in the new expensive building is ridiculous. 1300 employees doing what exactly. They should have more police on the trains patrolling (not driving around), they should have polite people working at their stations not the rude obnoxious attendants currently there, and they need to have employees scanning riders to verify they have paid the fare like MUNI Metro does.
But I’d prefer privatization and starting fresh with new employees from top to bottom.
I can’t wait until they build the new bart headquarters. Because we all can….
*Go urinate on the furniture,
*Shoot-up in the elevators,
*Cut the Catalytic converters off their cars (twice!)
*steal their bicycles(twice!),
*break the elevators,
*redirect them on 45 minute bus bridge on their way into the office,
*sit in the lobby with our hands in our pants talking dirty to the women,
*lock the doors to all the restrooms
*Force them to stand UP-AGAINST their unwashed co-workers for their entire shift,
*play inaudible announcements over the office PA system,
*wipe a layer of hair gel on all the windows,
*Provide a effective super aggressive police department that can instantly charge them if they violate the smallest parking rules,
*Provide a totally ineffective police force that allows repeated crimes against property/persons/fare evasion to take place right in front of officers!
What a wonderful office that would be! I can hardly wait!!
LOL !
Best of the day!
Ups in Concord has confirmed case of covid 19 and waited to the end of the shift to notify all workers after knowing a day prior which leads to half the building walking out,so expect delays in getting packages
That seems criminal to me. Call the County Health Administrator’s office and demand that employees of any business be immediately notified of any positive COVID-19 cases. Your fellow employees should all call out in protest, for days. Does your employer care more about profit than the health of its workers?
Leasing the building would be more appropriate so it can be returned to its owners when the inevitable downsizing and selloffs occur. What’s their current train occupancy rate with paying passengers? Anybody?
Bunch of scared fakes out there, backed in a corner pretending to care to save their butts from racial lawsuits!
BART is supposed to be a transportation agency that runs trains. How does an “Office of Civil Rights” contribute to that function?
Stop using my tax dollars (taxation without representation) for issues I have no say in. Stop pandering to the entitlement crowd.
My $’s will be spent on areas that treat all citizens fairly not just the hot button issue politicians want to gain votes from.
This is getting to the point of stupidity.
As someone noted yesterday all people and minorities can change their circumstances and it begins when the individual wants to change. The rest of the population and government is not necessarily required to do it for them. Prove you deserve respect by stop using the system and rioting, destroying what the rest of us respect and have worked towards and have contributed towards . You earn respect when you give respect.
BART doesn’t know it’s a Choo Choo train. It’s too bad they don’t have stockholders to answer to.
The contract negotiations before the first train started service showed what to expect in the future.
