Following a comprehensive review of their retail footprint, JCPenney made the decision to close 154 stores.
At this time, the JCPenney store inside the Sunvalley Mall will remain open.
They will continue to operate the majority of their stores.

Genuinely can’t remember the last time I set foot inside of a JCPenney…or Macy’s…or Kohl’s…
They used to have good deals, but the prices got too high for such low quality, just like Kohls.
Still sad to see them go like this.
What killed them, the Communist virus or the Communist unrest?
Actually I have a small Penneys near me in Carson City. It is the best Penneys I’ve ever been in. They keep things very clean & tidy & actually have an excellent choice of clothing. It puts the store at Sun Valley to shame ad it does the Reno store

If you just want to make political statements just carry on.
What Rob said.
Their business model and lack of up to date merchandising killed them, they have been in trouble for a long time, even when the economy was booming.
Good news for me because they sell my favorite brand of leisure wear, and I do love to SEE the item before I purchase it.
Part the Second:
Do we have a solid date for when Sunvalley Mall is to reopen?
Ron Johnson is long gone from Penney’s, but they never recovered from his tenure there.
My brother worked for Penney’s for many years, and he saw the writing on the wall and took early retirement. Fortunately, his retirement is not dependent on the survival of the company.
I agree. He was the company’s demise. They took a company that was doing OK and changed all the things people liked about it. They’ve never had customer service since! Good Riddance!
Can’t believe Sun Valley was spared.
I’ve always liked JC Penny.
When Ron Johnson tried to re-imagine the store, he met a lot of resistance to changing the image, remove coupons/deals (which people loved), went too upscale with the advertising (remember the thick glossy catalogs with one item per page?), he remodeled the stores and setup stores within stores, tried to lure away brands tied to other stores (which brought lawsuits), and unfortunately saddled them with so much debt, they’re still trying to recover today.
I’ve never really fully understood JC Penny’s deals prior to the Ron Johnson era, because unless you received a deal, which were almost always ongoing, it meant you were being screwed. I remember every time I bought something, it went on sale days later. It happened over and over, and to me it meant, don’t buy anything until it goes on sale, which was inevitable.
I will say this, item quality did improve under Johnson. Since then it’s still pretty good. I think people are reluctant to return. I always buy pajama bottoms from them, collared shirts, and khakis. I haven’t noticed anything being inferior. I guess it depends on what you buy. Now a days I tend to buy more online, from various stores, including from JCP.com. It’s just easier.
As far as the Sunvalley store being affected, it is one of the larger JC Penny stores in the chain if I’m not mistaken and typically does well. Should it ever close, it would likely be because the entire chain is closing.
Should JC Penny, Sears, and Macy’s close, Sunvalley is going to have a tough time.
In all the years I have been shopping (50+) I don’t think I have spend more than a few hundred $$ at J.C. Penny’s. For the most part I found their clothing to conservative and not very fashionable. I have bought stuff in the home section, but that was about 15 years ago. Since I’m now employed by Macy’s (furloughed) I buy 90% of what I need there, as well as presents for my family, since I get a nice employee discount. Macy’s has been one of my favorite stores since I lived in New York City in the late sixties. In this area it was Macy’s and Nordstrom’s. I got tired of shopping at Nordstrom’s before I was employed at Macy’s. I found their prices to high and selection limited. I did buy stuff at Nordstrom’s Rack, and might still buy a few items there. As someone who have dealt with retail customer’s for the last 10 years, I have learned, people wants deals, the love coupons. Macy’s have something called everyday value, anything where the price ends in 98 cents, is not eligible for the coupons, but the items are priced very well, and rarely go on sale. However, many customer’s will not buy those items, because they cannot use their coupon’s, even if you explain that the price is the same as the ones where you can use coupons. It is all in the perception, so when Penny’s got rid of deals and coupons, the customer’s didn’t feel like they got deals, and probably went to other stores Macy’s, Marshall’s and T.J. Maxx’s.
The sound system every few minutes had the same announcement that “customer assistance is needed in” near the blue jeans. I asked a clerk and they said there was so much shoplifting in that department that they wanted the crooks to think there was always someone on the way there.
For those who are interested, here’s the full list from CBS: J.C. Penney is closing 154 stores — here’s where they’re located
My picky son loves Pennys. I’m glad the one at Sunvalley is staying ooen for awhile. Let’s open up that mall today.
I miss Mervyn’s!!!
