The annual Artichoke Festival in Monterey that had been set to take place in August has been canceled as a result of, you guessed it, the coronavirus pandemic, organizers announced Wednesday.

The event, which had been held every year since 1959 and was scheduled for Aug. 8-9 at the Monterey County Fair & Event Center, instead will return on June 5 and 6 in 2021.

Festival organizers will refund all pre-purchased tickets for the 2020 version of the event.

Not the Artichoke Festival, nothing is sacred anymore.

Shoulda Coulda May 14, 2020 - 7:32 PM - 7:32 PM

Artichoke trivia-

Who was crowned the first California
Artichoke Queen in 1948.

Hint- She didn’t go by the famous name
that we know her by today.

Barbosa May 14, 2020 - 10:56 PM - 10:56 PM

Come on tell us. It’s been 3 hours, the suspense is killing me.

Aunt Barbara May 14, 2020 - 11:15 PM - 11:15 PM

Our dear Marilyn Monroe

dude1 May 14, 2020 - 11:21 PM - 11:21 PM

I’m guessing someone like Fay Dunaway, Jane Mansfield or some other starlet maybe Marilyn Monroe…. there are a lot of famous people who rather forget their roots… so who is it?

Gittyup May 14, 2020 - 11:24 PM - 11:24 PM

Marylin Monroe?

qwerty May 14, 2020 - 11:33 PM - 11:33 PM

It’s gotta be Doris Day since she lived in Carmel. Then I Googled it, and it was:

Gittyup May 15, 2020 - 6:13 AM - 6:13 AM

DuckDuckGo’d it, and it was Marilyn Monroe.

Brandi May 15, 2020 - 7:50 AM - 7:50 AM

All of you…. WRONG!
It was Norma Jeane Mortenson

Shoulda Coulda May 15, 2020 - 12:04 PM - 12:04 PM

The Queen was the future Marilyn Monroe.
Congrats to Aunt Barbara, Gittyup and Brandi.
You are all Winner Winner 🐔 Dinners!
(With a side of Artichokes).

When did it change from flattening the curve to finding a cure?

qwerty May 15, 2020 - 11:02 AM - 11:02 AM

This is going to sound cynical, but I believe the answer is…when the government realized government’s deep pockets were being spied by lawyers looking to sue for deaths due to the government opening “too early”. So instead of giving the all-clear sign, the gov issues guidelines and leave the liability to the business owner, who happens to be going broke due to the shutdown. That’s my 2 cents…

concord grape May 14, 2020 - 11:11 PM - 11:11 PM

Norma Jeane Mortenson

Hanne Jeppesen May 15, 2020 - 11:03 AM - 11:03 AM

I assume everyone know that Norma Jeane was Marilyn Monroe’s real name. As for Doris Day living in Carmel, I believe she only moved there when she retired from the movies.

dude1 May 14, 2020 - 11:24 PM - 11:24 PM

This is getting out of hand. When did we all become sheep living under communist-rule? I like the commercial that liberty is taken all at once it’s chip away and I’d say by things like fear mongering. Remember control the narrative…control the people

Aunt Barbara May 14, 2020 - 11:33 PM - 11:33 PM

We are all living in fear, time to rise up and get our lives back..
This is a crime and we are all the victims.

Pyrrhus May 15, 2020 - 8:48 AM - 8:48 AM

Infectious viruses don’t care about your freedom or being a “sheep” or if you are a conservative or a liberal. It’s going to infect whoever it can. There is no vaccine and it is unknown if you can be reinfected. Sorry, not having an Artichoke Festival is a 1st world problem. Also, where was all this outcry after 9/11 when we had our freedoms really taken away.

Again, I ask you people. What purpose does destroying the economy in California serve? It’s because of our economy and population that we have any power in this country. Even Trump had to eventually admit that COVID19 is a real threat. Do you really believe this is some huge government conspiracy to control the people and turn it into Soviet Russia? There is too much money involved for that to happen. If you must, put on the tinfoil hat but for the love of everything good stay home or wear your mask.

Schmee May 14, 2020 - 11:27 PM - 11:27 PM

If there is a local shortage of artichokes I am screwed myself. Just tell me how I arti-choke my chicken?

cheeseburguesa May 15, 2020 - 12:03 AM - 12:03 AM

It’ll be easier to post the short list of events that are actually happening this year.

KAD May 15, 2020 - 12:05 AM - 12:05 AM

My dear friend of over 45 years (RIP) was the Queen of this in the 1960s.

Rosebud May 15, 2020 - 12:31 AM - 12:31 AM

I strongly think, if we don’t let their game play bother us they might just STOP. It’s just best to chalk it up to experience.

Doh May 15, 2020 - 1:18 AM - 1:18 AM

If you hate wearing a mask, you’re really going to hate the ventilator.

bdml May 15, 2020 - 8:13 AM - 8:13 AM

@ Doh – with 33 total deaths in Contra Costa County and the hospitals empty how many people do you think are actually on ventilators? Your ominous threat seems empty.

Captain Bebops May 15, 2020 - 8:43 AM - 8:43 AM

Wearing a mask is like running around breathing into a paper bag. You do that for hiccups or to reduce anxiety or a panic attack. Hey, maybe that’s the real reason they want you to wear a mask, to reduce hysteria. But I don’t think it’s working.

I wear a mask for appearance’s sake but not on walks around the neighborhood. I want to breathe o2 not co2. Currently my oximeter show spO2 at 98% which is very good. People who come into the covid wards will often show a low sp02 level. It’s even been seen as low as 50% and those people go on ventilators.

As for artichokes the stores seem to have plenty of jumbos. I had one a couple weeks back. Very tasty. But I do have a couple friends who hate them because they find them messy to eat. 😀

Sam May 15, 2020 - 7:16 AM - 7:16 AM

What?? You people do realize that a lot of the country is back to normal right? No facemasks in bars, restaurants, no tracking, No social distancing and the virus has basically just disappeared. Like magic. Wonder why California is oppressing is people like this. Cases are not going up. Now the bay and LA continue to move goalposts 2 negative tests, extra time in quarantine, extended satay at home. This is a scandal of epic proportions. You’re being had by your leaders

Bud E May 15, 2020 - 9:23 AM - 9:23 AM

There are over 20,000 new cases in the U.S. everyday. It has not “disappeared”
Do a little research before you post fake truths

WC Resident May 15, 2020 - 9:46 AM - 9:46 AM

Most of the country does not have people or has a very low population density. Life never changes much for the few that live there. You stay in tune with the seasons and if you are near the ocean you are in tune with the tides.

The reason for extending or “imposing” the rules developed for the more densely populated areas to the less populated areas is that the first inclination for many people in the densely populated areas is to flee to less populated areas. Those people bring the virus with them.

Rural areas present two challenges. 1) Medical services are very limited, even in the larger towns. 2) People tend to all go to the same limited set of retail stores, restaurants, bars, and churches. Thus, when there is an outbreak it tends to affect everyone.

Sam May 15, 2020 - 12:04 PM - 12:04 PM

Just reading the morning news

Sam May 15, 2020 - 7:22 AM - 7:22 AM

News just in, zero daily deaths in Denmark. Funny how it just disappeared, like magic, gone

Ozzie May 15, 2020 - 8:40 AM - 8:40 AM

The US had 1,700 deaths. Wonder what we’re doing wrong. .

Sam May 15, 2020 - 12:05 PM - 12:05 PM

Sam May 15, 2020 - 7:47 AM - 7:47 AM

There never was a pandemic. It is just another flu strain that isn’t any more dangerous than any other flu. Our government needs to knock this crap off and call an official end to it. They all need voted out because they are a part of the SCAM.

bdml May 15, 2020 - 8:17 AM - 8:17 AM

@ Sam – I am with you! This beyond absurd…

Ozzie May 15, 2020 - 8:31 AM - 8:31 AM

80,000 dead in 2 months. Not like any flu. People like you are dangerous. Knock it off

Rob May 15, 2020 - 10:03 AM - 10:03 AM

Coronavirus is not influenza – so no it is literally not a strain of the flu.

If you don’t know that basic stuff pretty sure economics isn’t your strength either.

Dodged a bullet May 15, 2020 - 9:02 AM - 9:02 AM

OZZIE, Thank you, exactly.

Kirkwood May 15, 2020 - 9:19 AM - 9:19 AM

I’ve always loved artichokes, but not some the jumbo sized because they are expensive and usually too woody. The medium sized are best but usually only available for a couple of weeks. I haven’t had a single artichoke this year due to SIP. An artichoke-chopped olive sandwich is delicious, but labor intensive to make.

Hanne Jeppesen May 15, 2020 - 11:00 AM - 11:00 AM

Almost any fruit and vegetable are the best and tastiest at the medium size. My dad was a Gardner and he taught me that. The smaller sizes are underdeveloped and the larger usually contain to much water, especially strawberries, tomatoes etc. Also if you buy what is in season you will get the best quality.

chuckie the troll May 15, 2020 - 12:05 PM - 12:05 PM

Gov. Newsom read something somewhere that said you can get Xi coronavirus from artichokes, so there you have it. I wonder if you can get it from $20/pint ice cream?

chuckie the troll May 15, 2020 - 1:44 PM - 1:44 PM

Sorry if I hurt your girly-man feelings there Jojo! I actually spent over 30 years as an expert in invasive species. It is obvious that Xi coronavirus has spread evenly enough throughout our population. We are not going to extinguish this pandemic through “Cower-in-place”. Elderly, frail, immune-compromised people would do well to limit contact with others.

But you are the one displaying a shallow and weak ‘effort’. An honest ledger always has 2 sides, income and expense. On the EXPENSE side there is, what, +$5,000,000,000,000 lost productivity and destruction of businesses. Over 35,500 people are diagnosed with cancer in any given week… but how many people have ben diagnosed with it in the past 2 months? That’s about 300,000 late diagnoses just of cancer. Same applies to heart disease, diabetes, high BP, etc…And the scary thing is that Gov. Newsom is just as dim as you are!
