Governors From Five Western States Ask Federal Government For $1T In Relief Funding

Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Monday that governors and legislators from five Western states wrote a joint letter to the federal government asking for $1 trillion in relief funding for state and local governments during the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.

Governors and legislative chamber leaders from California, Oregon, Washington, Nevada and Colorado wrote the letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.

The letter from members of the Western States Pact called for at least $1 trillion to support basic government functions and services like public health, public safety and law enforcement and public education.

“Without federal support, states and cities will be forced to make impossible decisions — like whether to fund critical public health care that will help us recover, or prevent layoffs of teachers, police officers,
firefighters and other first responders,” the officials said in the letter.

The relief funding would also support services and programs like job training and assistance for small business owners that will help state and local economies recover from the pandemic-induced economic crises and recessions.

“It’s not just states asking for a bailout, quite the contrary,” Newsom said during his daily coronavirus briefing Monday. “It’s requesting that we support those that we need the most at this time — our public safety officials, our public health officials — and making sure that we do justice to our public education system.”

Read this over a few times. I am so confused. Also, what makes our group more important than the other 45 states?

cheese,

You read that right the first time! Our future President just said that up is not up, it’s down. This is America 180, just as planned. He believes his is the divine power to take from and oppress the people of HIS state while having the people of the other 45 states shoulder the financial burden.

Because with pelosi running house of representatives they think they might just pull it off.

Slick is sweating bullets.

All he can hear in his head is, “$53 Billion, $53 Billion, $53 Billion…”

The hole is too deep Slick, let someone else do your job.

Antonius May 11, 2020 - 4:21 PM - 4:21 PM

0 $ for Illegals
0 $ for state Pension Plans
0 $ to provide the homeless tobacco, drugs and booze in their free hotel rooms.
0 $ for politicians
0 $ for Pelosi Ice Cream

Sell the $68 billion train to nowhere.

The Professor May 12, 2020 - 8:09 AM - 8:09 AM

Well said Antonius. The state’s finances have been abused by our “leaders” for decades. The day of reckoning was still a long way off until Covid came along and revealed just how dire the CA financial situation is. Now these states want America to pick up the tab for their socialist utopia.

Clean up your act (and your balance sheet) before receiving a single penny.

Mark my words. The only people in government who will face cutbacks are the first responders. Police and firefighters will have their budgets slashed while paperclip pushers and janitors continue as if nothing has changed. Gavin will do his best to make you the taxpayer feel the pain even as he doles out millions to his feel good pet projects.

Maragaret Thatcher said it best:

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other peoples’ money.

Let us never forget this fundamental truth: the State has no source of money other than money which people earn themselves. If the State wishes to spend more it can do so only by borrowing your savings or by taxing you more. It is no good thinking that someone else will pay – that ‘someone else’ is you. There is no such thing as public money; there is only taxpayers’ money.

Socialists cry “Power to the people”, and raise the clenched fist as they say it. We all know what they really mean – power over people, power to the State.

Many of our troubles are due to the fact that our people turn to politicians for everything.

Dude1 May 12, 2020 - 9:59 AM - 9:59 AM

Antonius….best response I’ve seen on Claycord in a long time! The candy store is closed Mr. Newsom…. the rest of the country should not have to shoulder any of this problem. Have the country pay for your Utopian plans no way!!!

Cyn May 11, 2020 - 4:21 PM - 4:21 PM

Not a dime, not a single dime, DO YOU HEAR ME?

Cellophane May 11, 2020 - 4:26 PM - 4:26 PM

No government should ever be allowed to spend more money than it has on hand at the moment.

These states overspent, some very recklessly.

They should all figure out how to fix their own budgets and put in place regulations so that other fools don’t overspend again.

L0L May 11, 2020 - 4:32 PM - 4:32 PM

1 TRILLION for 5 states? Why don’t the government, it’s employees, the “representatives” sacrifice their paycheck the way we’ve had too?

Where is that money going to come from? Borrowing more from China? We’re basically printing money at this point which is not sustainable in the slightest. No amount of taxes will make up for this insane spending.

Cut government programs, cut salaries, I see health officers making $300k+ benefits. Until they start the feel the brunt of their decisions they will keep living above us and making decisions that don’t affect them.

MoJo May 11, 2020 - 4:46 PM - 4:46 PM

Prediction- The House says yes and the Senate says go blow sand. That is all.

The Observer May 11, 2020 - 4:50 PM - 4:50 PM

With the major portion of a trillion dollars from the feds, Newsom can keep California locked up tight through the end of the year.

Puffandstuff May 11, 2020 - 4:52 PM - 4:52 PM

What a joke! I hope the Feds laugh in his face!

Sam May 11, 2020 - 5:03 PM - 5:03 PM

And there it is. Trump will not give him a dime to give to the undocumented. Not in a million years. Watch those state and local taxes. Gavin is the dictator of his own little nation state. California is so cool and hip. As we pay for the junkies next fix..hahaha

chuckie the troll May 11, 2020 - 5:58 PM - 5:58 PM

Well, Gavin, the first thing you need to do is lay-off every single non-essential government employee at the state, county and local level. Since sales and gas tax receipts are down, all attached programs need to be cut to meet current income. Next, turn over every single illegal alien felon to Federal authorities. When you have done that, you can wait in line!

Sam May 11, 2020 - 6:37 PM - 6:37 PM

They are all non essential. We should lay them off. Just keep cal trans to fix the roads

America May 11, 2020 - 6:00 PM - 6:00 PM

That’s right, keep kicking the can down the road. Can bet my house that he will continuously announce new cases of covid well into 2021.

That’s odd. I thought the Progressives knew how to do everything better than anyone else…and now they want a handout, paid for by the other 45 States??

The Fearless Spectator May 11, 2020 - 6:26 PM - 6:26 PM

One minute California is competing with the feds. Now a little coalition with the “Western Pact” and the next minute asking for ludicrous dollars?

We have been shut down less than 90 days, how does that equal $1Trillion?
This must be the new math……..

Not only is it ill conceived, it’s poorly presented. In real business these guys would be fired.

RANDOM TASK May 11, 2020 - 7:05 PM - 7:05 PM

wow

shout and cry and moan over the potus being elected
slam him cheer false allegations …spit on potus when ever you can
rob the citizens of this state just like gov brown and increase crime and bums and illegals while leaving American citizens in the wind

the demorat parade of spending and fleecing our taxes in this state is in flux

the demorats love this chaos they can push for what ever they want and hand out candy to the children voters and show something shiny and fleece away and line the demorat pockets

the potus should issue a statement of just this

“you kick the bull….you get the horns
and all the rest including the rear end fully loaded
to repay the previous un favorable comments and slander and false accusations and blatant lies and anti American socialism communism against its people and against potus

you burned a bridge now embrace the isolation as Pelosi can not and will not save you and your blundering ….

I mean really you secretly sent a billion dollars of our states tax dollars to our enemy china and hid it from the fed …

I see your following oscama in giving our enemies cash straight from our country and doing it on the sly with no trace it actually happened
was that even the real amount ????

your lucky they don’t throw you in prison

Dude May 12, 2020 - 12:00 AM - 12:00 AM

Seriously? Open the state back up and let people get back to work and paying taxes.
Newsome and the Dems started this lockdown and they own it. Nearly 2 months now and he said literally 1/2 the state was going to be sick with the China Virus within 2 weeks.

OPEN THE STATE!!

Justifiable languor May 12, 2020 - 8:21 AM - 8:21 AM

Newsom cannot be trusted with even a few billion. He has demonstrated this for more than a decade. San Francisco is a mess. Los Angeles not only a mess but about to riot. He listened to his grandma regarding politics … Parsel tongued traitor she is.

Tens of billions voted in bonds. Every election. Where did that money go? Not to fix our roads. Not to fix our schools. Not to build a library. Not to stop illegal invasion or even gang crimes.

NO! The Fed’s, under Trump need to step in. Where is that money???

Michael 1 May 12, 2020 - 8:53 AM - 8:53 AM

Newsom will start the usual scare tactics .He will tell us that he will have to make cuts to police , fire stations , hospitals , schools and wheelchairs for crippled kids . The simple thinkers in this state will believe him without question . Yet all the politicians and their servants will continue get their fat salaries and they are the ones that created this mess .

Original G May 12, 2020 - 10:26 AM - 10:26 AM

Is expedient to have a non questioning under educated electorate repeatedly conditioned by fear.
The progressive liberal political establishment has patently worked over decades to have a voter base dependent upon government for their financial well being. Be they on public assistance or as public employees.

Scott Fine May 12, 2020 - 9:09 AM - 9:09 AM

It’s funny how these are all considered Blue States. Poor Leadership.

Newscum and his vapid political allies should ask China for the money.

Wouldn’t surprise me if Pelosi, deliberately, was Patient Zero and Schiff was Patient Sub-Zero. They tried everything else to ruin the Country. (And, yes, this is sarcasm for those of you who need an explanation)

You can kiss prop 13 goodbye.

Gittyup May 12, 2020 - 11:58 AM - 11:58 AM

Yes, the Prop 13 they will be re-introducing on the November ballot. Wouldn’t want to give them any more of our tax dollars to squander.
