Gov. Newsom Signs Remote Marriage License Order

by CLAYCORD.com
57 comments

Gov. Gavin Newsom signed an executive order this week allowing state residents to obtain marriage licenses remotely due to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.

The order, which Newsom signed Thursday, will allow couples to obtain a marriage license from their county clerk via video conference provided that both members of the couple are state residents and that they can both present a valid form of identification on the video call. The clerk will then email the licenses to the couple.

The state will also recognize marriages performed over video call as long as both members of the couple are present and there is at least one witness to the live ceremony.

The executive order will remain in effect for the next 60 days, according to Newsom’s office.

Marriage by video? Marriage license by email? Can they surf or play golf on their honeymoon? What about the cake?

Sam May 3, 2020 - 1:36 PM - 1:36 PM

They have a permission slip to do all the above..it’s the constitution

Any Twosome Newsom

Gittyup May 3, 2020 - 10:53 AM - 10:53 AM

Like he has suddenly developed some sort of healthy respect for the marriage vows.

Concord mom May 3, 2020 - 11:52 AM - 11:52 AM

Be serious. Filing your marriage with the county clerk has absolutely nothing to do with “vows”. It’s the recording of a date where your tax filing changes. It is also the filing a legally binding agreement that can only be dissolved in court so assets can be fairly distributed. No different than a joint business partnership. The state doesn’t give a shoot about your vows and what you do with them, they care about financial implications of the union.

Gittyup May 3, 2020 - 7:23 PM - 7:23 PM

@ Concord mom

Newsom obviously has given marriage a priority position in these actions which is stunning since he has so little regard for it in his own life.

dan May 4, 2020 - 10:24 AM - 10:24 AM

@gittyup – when I read the comments, I hear nothing but rhetoric about personal rights and limited government intervention, except when it does not align with your own beliefs. If two people want to get married, let them get married. Howe does that hurt you or impact you and your rights?

America May 3, 2020 - 11:23 AM - 11:23 AM

But people of faith are denied church wedding!!!??? Same for other religious ceremonies! Slimy Newsom threw us a bone, but he can take it back and eat it himself.

ZZ May 3, 2020 - 11:32 AM - 11:32 AM

This is BS. You can wear a mask and go to the grocery store but you can’t wear a mask and go get a marriage certificate.
This Governor is power tripping.

Gittyup May 3, 2020 - 7:20 PM - 7:20 PM

He always seemed a little “off” to me, but his inconsistencies and bizarre edits since he took office have grown in intensity and throughout this virus thing until he obviously has gone seriously off the rails.

dan May 4, 2020 - 12:48 PM - 12:48 PM

you can order groceries on line. Why not a marriage certificate?

Tugboat May 3, 2020 - 11:32 AM - 11:32 AM

Gee, what could be next? Wait for it! Vote by mail….

Lovelace May 3, 2020 - 12:12 PM - 12:12 PM

There is no need to wait for it. It has been around for years.
Troll on brother…..

Cyn May 3, 2020 - 12:39 PM - 12:39 PM

@Lovelace Yes, voting by mail has been around, but it has never been the only way. Tugboat may have been referring to the fact that many democrats want to do away with in-person voting and making it strictly by mail. I don’t believe he/she was trolling, brother.

The Fearless Spectator May 3, 2020 - 12:57 PM - 12:57 PM

It’s difficult not to be a bit critical when social media gives us real time access to the many stupid thing that politicians say. To be successful in business, you have to be very careful about messaging. If you are smart you surround yourself with a diverse group to assist in that. Today’s politicians are likely to forget messaging altogether during their press conference or Twitter storm and blurt out goofy stuff.

Sam May 3, 2020 - 1:34 PM - 1:34 PM

If you can stand in line at Costco and shop at Walmart you can show up to vote. Logic wins

mtzman May 3, 2020 - 2:15 PM - 2:15 PM

Actually, I believe vote-by-mail IS the only way in five states, including one pretty darn red state (Utah).

Sam May 3, 2020 - 2:55 PM - 2:55 PM

Sounds like there’s some work to do in Utah. Demand voter ID

Natalie May 3, 2020 - 11:34 AM - 11:34 AM

It says the state will recognize a marriage that is officiated through video conference. It does not say that a couple has to get married that way. A marriage ceremony can still be performed in person. A priest can stand 6 feet away from the couple. The physical distancing rules don’t apply to a couple themselves. Small outdoor ceremonies can still be performed, or private ceremonies in one’s residence.

As for the license, what does it matter if it is obtained through conference call instead of at a cubical in a bureaucratic building. The license is just the legal formality.

Kentucky Derby May 3, 2020 - 12:57 PM - 12:57 PM

Newsom has no respect for marriage, and either does Trump.

The Wizard May 3, 2020 - 1:56 PM - 1:56 PM

Kentucky Derby, You might want to include Bill Clinton.

Gittyup May 4, 2020 - 7:52 AM - 7:52 AM

Seems like a method ripe for identity theft if all one has to do is “present a valid form of identification on the video call.” So, by surprise one day you discover someone using your name and a fake ID obtained a marriage license by video conference and married someone you’ve never met. Fake California Driver’s Licenses are some of the best and most convincing around, even in person, or so I’m told. The consequences are a little frightening and bring another dimension to the nightmare that is identity theft. Good luck with that.

Frustrated May 3, 2020 - 11:38 AM - 11:38 AM

Noj

On what do you base that opinion?

Sam May 3, 2020 - 1:29 PM - 1:29 PM

It’s straight from the CDC website. They snuck in their revised numbers. Why hasn’t your news told you yet?

Cellophane May 3, 2020 - 12:01 PM - 12:01 PM

The third rate political trash bag thinks he’s doing great things for us Californians.

All he’s really doing is creating outrage among the people.

I hope this all comes back and blows up in his face.

SeeK May 3, 2020 - 12:09 PM - 12:09 PM

Lot of hate on this post. I wonder how this affects any of you. You know just because it’s available doesn’t mean you have to do it.

Now, ya’ll simmer down and go wash your hands.

Sam May 3, 2020 - 2:59 PM - 2:59 PM

“Hate” is a loaded word and used to manipulate people to shut up. People can have opinions, it’s still allowed. Just because something conflicts does not equal “hate” time to learn a new way

Concord mom May 3, 2020 - 12:14 PM - 12:14 PM

Omg this is a no brainer people. It’s only for those in-state so easily traceable via state taxes and DMV. Fraud risk is about as equal if they showed up in person. This is one of those tasks that should be moved online to save people time and expense of taking time off to go wait in line. If the DMV can move certain tasks like registration payment online, why not this one.

Lovelace May 3, 2020 - 12:14 PM - 12:14 PM

Some people exist in a perpetual state of outrage. It dilutes its power and meaning.

Hanne Jeppesen May 3, 2020 - 12:36 PM - 12:36 PM

Lovelace I couldn’t agree with you more. It seems critical thinking is sorely lacking.

S May 3, 2020 - 12:41 PM - 12:41 PM

wasn’t there a story about a boy and a wolf…

Dejavou all over again…

Nanny Hanny May 3, 2020 - 12:51 PM - 12:51 PM

Perpetual outrage? Lack of critical thinking? That’s our nanny.

Well??!! May 3, 2020 - 2:08 PM - 2:08 PM

Critical thinking Hanna?! Really? The lack of critical thinking have kept people cowering in their homes.

Well??!! May 3, 2020 - 2:14 PM - 2:14 PM

But I think that us logical ones have figured out that whenever we challenge you, you go silent. Otherwise, I’d love to see your response, or popcorns, or John P, and especially Ozzie…

Sam May 3, 2020 - 2:51 PM - 2:51 PM

You won’t hear a thing. They are waiting for their download from the outrage machine..spin the wheel what will it be

Eva May 3, 2020 - 12:26 PM - 12:26 PM

I wish he would sign an executive order to 5250 dangerously mentally ill people who are not social distancing and harassing and threatening us “sane”? tax paying residents. They need to quarantined and NOT put into hotels and catered to. But, that’s what our “insane” state taxes are paying for…
But he will start running for President on this platform. National
News is already skewing this. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

To Do List May 3, 2020 - 1:08 PM - 1:08 PM

Not everything Gavin does is bad. This is a great idea and the risk of fraud is next to zero. In other news, this morning I married Camila Cabello.

Sam May 3, 2020 - 2:53 PM - 2:53 PM

Everything Gavin does is bad. He has no class and zero respect for the people

Gittyup May 4, 2020 - 8:00 AM - 8:00 AM

If people can persuade or pay others to take college entrance exams, IRS exams, and other high-level employment examinations for them, they can arrange for someone to sit in for one or both of the individuals obtaining the marriage license. Presenting a valid ID is no problem. You can count on it.

Sam May 3, 2020 - 1:27 PM - 1:27 PM

It’s actually true. The CDC numbers were revised yesterday the numbers of deaths have been reduced by 30,000 plus. Go to the CDC website. Totally not fake news or a troll

The Wizard May 3, 2020 - 2:02 PM - 2:02 PM

The oil on Gavin’s head is making him crazy.

chuckie the troll May 3, 2020 - 2:54 PM - 2:54 PM

Is there a way to send Newsom some remote middle-fingers?

Gittyup May 4, 2020 - 10:39 AM - 10:39 AM

@chuckie the troll That is the beauty of his position in all this. He is completely protected from this sort of feedback. His handlers, and his aunti-advisor Nancy Pelosi, want him to think he’s more than qualified for presidential consideration. He is being groomed by Democrats to bring about their agenda quickly once elected. His weak ego, demonstrated by his autocratic rule, would be destroyed by such displays.

ZZ May 3, 2020 - 3:21 PM - 3:21 PM

I see this applies to both members being California residents. I suppose if one isn’t a resident of California then they can’t get a license? Is this new?

Strad May 3, 2020 - 3:37 PM - 3:37 PM

Next week it will be remote divorce.

Ozzie May 3, 2020 - 4:01 PM - 4:01 PM

The conspiracy is think about how many new legal US citizens there will be through marriage and registered Democrats. You guys are slipping.

miguel May 3, 2020 - 5:39 PM - 5:39 PM

The county clerk’s website still reads (in very bold print), “Please note, the application online is for your convenience only. Both applicants must come into our office to complete the process and receive your marriage license.”

WC Resident May 3, 2020 - 5:40 PM - 5:40 PM

Some people fail to pay attention details…

The “lies ” were posted by CDC here https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/nvss/vsrr/covid19/index.htm where at present they are reporting “37,308” COVID-19 deaths from February 1 to April 25th. However, it’s widely known that the CDC is more rigorous about their numbers and does not count someone born or dead until they are notified via official channels.

Most of the media uses data from Johns Hopkins University or the European CDC (ECDC) both of which are publishing data for the entire world. They don’t use the USA’s CDC’s numbers other than as a footnote that they exist but that it takes them about two months to finalize the data on the numbers for a day.

Here’s an article that goes into how the data sources work and compares them. https://ourworldindata.org/covid-sources-comparison

Chicken Little May 3, 2020 - 6:44 PM - 6:44 PM

Well, they don’t need to be legal or married to vote Democrat. And Republicans have no problem with legal immigrants who want to become citizens.

Hanne Jeppesen May 3, 2020 - 7:20 PM - 7:20 PM

My Macy’s job is an easy job at my age. I love contact with the customer’s. I have had my own business, been a successful insurance agent selling Long Term Care, have some college in the US, and educated in Europe. I was agreeing with Lovelace who pointed out some people live and post here for the sole purpose of being critical of EVERYTHING Newsome does. As for cowering at home, my conservative friends are onboard with it, although Trump supporters. One is a native of Italy and has family there, he is aware of what this virus can do.

ON DA May 4, 2020 - 6:40 AM - 6:40 AM

well let’s see since everybody seems to be on a roll these days right. The age of consent is at least 18 here in quality for nia. Those other places glue taw or flew taw or whatever the age of marriage is like what ??? And of course they are real people and not like identity impersonators.

Gittyup May 4, 2020 - 8:16 AM - 8:16 AM

@Hanne You must be desperate for work for someone your age to stand like that for hours for a few bucks. And, Long Term Care insurance was pretty much ruled a scam years ago.

Thank goodness for those who use their ability to critique to improve every single conditions of mankind. They move the race out of the mudhole in which it would exist if people with the ability to see what is wrong never spoke up. Some guy who had a better idea invented the wheel.

Why marriage licenses, and why now? Newsom is off the rails and has been ego tripping since he took office.

JWB May 4, 2020 - 9:00 AM - 9:00 AM

@Gittyup

That’s pretty arrogant to look down on somebody who works.

1791 May 4, 2020 - 9:25 AM - 9:25 AM

I think it’s great that Hanne is working and looking forward to getting back to it. She says she love her job. How many of us can say the same thing about our jobs?

Critical thinking is just that…critical.

Concordejet May 4, 2020 - 9:48 AM - 9:48 AM

Some people likes the ideal so, they do not have to spend a lot of money on the wedding. If they just want to get married quick just do it on zoom.

A lot of people want to have a wedding. best to just wait until next year better than never. Save more money that way so, they can be ready to go on a honeymoon. No wedding and No honeymoon this year. Hopefully next year.

Gittyup May 4, 2020 - 10:34 AM - 10:34 AM

@JWB Quite the contrary. I was putting myself in her position and thinking I would have to be desperate for some money and possibly to qualify for Social Security to stand for six to eight hours a day at advanced age. I’m thinking she got a puny alimony settlement and can’t live on it and her nanny employers didn’t pay into Social Security the years she worked for them. She seems a little needy.
