Dear California State Fair Fans:

While we had remained hopeful that the CA State Fair & Food Festival would be able to continue our 166-year tradition this summer of showcasing the best of California and entertaining the state’s residents and families, it’s clear the impact of COVID-19 will continue to be felt for the foreseeable future and that large gatherings should be postponed at this time.

Based on the advice of health experts and the continued guidance issued by the governor, the Cal Expo Board has decided to cancel the CA State Fair and Food Festival scheduled for July 17-August 2 until 2021. The health and safety of the community, our guests, and staff is our number one priority, and we agree with the measured, scientific approach that’s been implemented by the governor to combat COVID-19.

Our staff is working diligently on a strategy to safely reopen when appropriate and we look forward to the time when we can all gather again safely to celebrate the great things Californians have done and will do in the future.

Please stay safe and healthy and maintain physical distancing.

Sincerely,

The California State Fair Team

😔

SF oh April 26, 2020 - 11:13 AM - 11:13 AM

Anyone heard anything about the Concord Pavilion shows for this summer? I have tix to 2 events – I don’t think they’ll be held – but the website has not given any updated info.

JazzMan April 26, 2020 - 2:06 PM - 2:06 PM

Live Nation Posted a notice about the procedure to get refunds or a 150% credit toward other events, but no specific cancellations yet. 🤞🏼

S April 26, 2020 - 11:28 AM - 11:28 AM

Love the Fair; guess I’ll cancel my lipitor prescription.

Chicken Little April 26, 2020 - 11:33 AM - 11:33 AM

That’s no fair.

Joatmeal April 26, 2020 - 8:24 PM - 8:24 PM

BaDum. Good one!

Gittyup April 26, 2020 - 12:38 PM - 12:38 PM

When Newsom has everyone’s undivided attention, he will announce the state has been taken over by the “progressive” (read “socialist”) wing of the Democratic party.

Miranda April 27, 2020 - 10:09 PM - 10:09 PM

No ones forcing you to stay in California. Don’t let the door hit ya on the way out.

Parent April 26, 2020 - 1:11 PM - 1:11 PM

So cancelling stuff in July/August already? Not even May yet …. so I guess the government wants to kill every small business. No fun allowed if you live in the Nation of California ruled by Dictator Newscom.

Can’t even let us get past the current SIP expiration date of May 3/4 before we cancel summer.

Reason April 26, 2020 - 1:58 PM - 1:58 PM

By canceling now, certain costs can be avoided. As the actual date gets closer, deposits can’t be refunded and other payments become due.

Doh April 26, 2020 - 5:16 PM - 5:16 PM

Do you really believe a cure or vaccine will be available by then? The BEST guess of experts, if nothing goes wrong in the testing stages, is about a year from now.

anotheranon April 26, 2020 - 5:45 PM - 5:45 PM

@Parent
Apparently you’ve never been involved in the planning of a large event, probably nothing larger than a family picnic. It takes months of preparation, such as planning and organizing, contacting all the participants, etc. Better to bail early than last minute. It isn’t like making a phone call, saying let’s get together next Saturday.

parent April 26, 2020 - 9:27 PM - 9:27 PM

@anotheranon
I have planned events that have last 4 days with over 10K people a day at them. Planned concerts, productions etc at venues at Stern Grove in the city, Shoreline Amphitheatre etc … I have some experience with it.

@ Duh
No cure will be made for this, none. They have been working coronavirus cure for ~80 years. Unfortunately, it mutates, which makes it difficult to find a cure for. The Rhinovirus and the Coronavirus cause the common cold .. we do not have a cure for the common cold. In fact, we do not have a cure for any virus. We have antiviral medications, which is not quite the same. They may find something that they can throw into the annual flu shot … but that is not a vaccine.

@ Reason
Certain costs can be avoided, I get that. My point is, the SIP is scheduled (not going to happen cause of the dictator, not because of science) ends on May 3/4. Waiting another week is not going to make a difference in cost, it is not like the location will get another customer who wants that venue. So can any of our leaders follow their own timelines? Another example, we closed school for the year before the first SIP date had been reached … why?

The science is not supporting the SIP any longer. To many facts are coming out showing the infection rate is sky high, which drive the mortality rate WAY LOW. Remove all the deaths falsely associated with SARS2 and the scientists are estimating below a 0.2% mortality rate … so between 2-3X more deadly than the flu.

Notinmybackyard April 27, 2020 - 10:30 AM - 10:30 AM

We have eradicated a virus. Smallpox.

JWB April 27, 2020 - 11:29 AM - 11:29 AM

@ parent

CoV-2 actually doesn’t mutate very rapidly, which is actually a concern, because one reason why there would be rapid mutation is that the virus tries to escape the immune response by the host.

Yes there are cures for viruses look at HCV. They are actually amazingly effective cures.

“They may find something that they can throw into the annual flu shot … but that is not a vaccine.”
I’m not even sure what you mean by this and why would you think the first vaccine would be combination vaccine with influenza?

parent April 27, 2020 - 11:45 AM - 11:45 AM

@ Notinmy
I stand corrected, you are correct. Per the CDC smallpox is the only virus that has been eradicated.

@JWB
Per CDC, there is no Vaccine for Hep C.

““They may find something that they can throw into the annual flu shot … but that is not a vaccine.”
I’m not even sure what you mean by this and why would you think the first vaccine would be combination vaccine with influenza?”

This is because several scientist and doctors have said that whatever ‘cure’ they find may be placed with the flu shot. I aint that smart … so I have to trust smarter people than me.

JWB April 27, 2020 - 12:19 PM - 12:19 PM

@ parent

A “cure” or “therapeutic” is something you use to cure an illness. A “prophylactic” generally a vaccine is something you use to prevent an illness. There have been some attempts to try using vaccines as therapeutic vaccines but they have so far all failed. And yes a few vaccines can be administered after infection but it would still be to prevent the disease.

So you said “In fact, we do not have a cure for any virus.” And I told you that this wrong we actually have cures for HCV. Your response that there is no vaccine against HCV is correct but nonsensical because that says there is prophylactic against HCV, but not that there is no cure for HCV.

I’m not sure what doctors or scientist told you that a cure for COVID-19 would be added to a flu shot, but I tell you that these are not reputable scientist or doctors. The flu shot is a prophylactic and is supposed to prevent you from getting influenza, or at least to have less severe disease if you get infected. It would make no sense whatsoever to add a cure for COVID-19 to the flu shot. People are trying to develop a vaccine for COVID-19 but certainly not as a combination vaccine with influenza. If there ever is a vaccine maybe at some point in the future there may be a combo vaccine, but certainly nobody is trying to start with a combo vaccine.

What April 26, 2020 - 3:51 PM - 3:51 PM

Are you kidding me it’s all about politics don’t try and blame Trump if you want to blame anybody blame China and the governor’s not Trump you Liberals are all the same no matter what he does it’s never good enough

The Wizard April 26, 2020 - 4:05 PM - 4:05 PM

The Wizard April 26, 2020 - 6:17 PM - 6:17 PM

Guess I got to hold off getting my Shamwow this year.

JWP April 26, 2020 - 4:36 PM - 4:36 PM

bummer. we go every year.
the remaining year is going to be odd to say the least.
i certainly wouldn’t blame newsom, he was proactive and definitely saved lives in doing so. I love california, along with new york, both are the greatest states.

MovingOutOfCA April 26, 2020 - 6:30 PM - 6:30 PM

How long are people just going to allow this? This is CRAZY. I truly believe they are trying to destroy this state on purpose. Time for people to stand up!

Joatmeal April 26, 2020 - 8:30 PM - 8:30 PM

I’m not following your logic. Why would a politician purposefully want to destroy the state? How do they benefit from cancelling the state fair?

The Wizard April 26, 2020 - 6:37 PM - 6:37 PM

Thanks Gav for killing more jobs.

parent April 26, 2020 - 9:29 PM - 9:29 PM

Maybe he wants to go back to the midevil times where all of his subjects are serfs working his land? He does want us to become a Nation State.

Aunt Barbara April 26, 2020 - 10:16 PM - 10:16 PM

Newsom does not care what happens to California, his plans are to be in Washington DC. With all the immigrant and gay votes he has worked so hard for California it willl be in ruins and penniless and the laughing stock of the world. .
He closed his eyes and mind to SF when he was Mayor and just look at it now.
