The Bay Area Air Quality Management District on Wednesday announced a settlement of nearly $150,000 with Chevron for air quality violations at the oil and gas company’s Richmond refinery.
Chevron USA Inc. agreed to pay $146,500 for 33 air quality violations from 2016 to 2018, according to the air district. The violations named in the settlement, including failure to sample flare gas during a flare
event and failure to repair a cooling tower leak in a timely manner, have since been resolved.
“The air district must hold companies accountable for failure to comply with strict operating permits that protect public health and air quality,” air district executive officer Jack Broadbent said. “Residents of surrounding communities have a right to be protected from hazardous air pollutants and the air district continues to ensure those protections.”
Settlement funds will be used to continue investigating and enforcing air quality standards around the Bay Area.
Chevron said in a statement that the company “cooperated fully with the BAAQMD in reaching this agreement.”
The statement said, “Chevron takes environmental protections seriously and has taken preventive measures to avoid similar situations from occurring in the future.”
drop in the bucket
146K over 2 years?
The fine should be in Billions. BAAQMD officials must be in Chevron payroll.
I guess Jackie got jealous of all the governors displaying their powers related to lock downs and decided to make sure the sheep know that he still controls part of their lives also.
You say, “come on Larry”, but just try to have a nice wood fire on any major holiday and Jackie will send his evil henchmen out to get you.
AOC says shut them down. With all the crap they take I am surprised they have not drug up and got the hell out of this state.
What are they going to do – pick up their refinery and leave?
AOC never said that. Wing nuts use the technique of putting words in others’ mouths to make them look bad. Trump also does it a lot.
Why would Chevron leave California because of what someone in New York says?
Doh…..What does the Green New Deal do ? AOC is a Jackass Commie.
@ doh
AOC actually said “You absolutely love to see it”, regarding the low oil prices, but she is too stupid to realize that when people get back to work, the low gas prices mean more people will buy and drive gas powered cars, not coal powered green mobiles. I think her progressive teachers must have taught her that 2 + 2 = 7.
Violations that have no impact on air quality and safety, just used to pad the baaqd payroll which consists of supervisors and council members appointed by other politicians/representatives. Would hate to see Chevron close the refinery because of the impact on workers, but would love to see richmond and baaqd scramble to find new sources of income.
They are Richmond’s Sugar Daddy. If they left, Richmond would be toast. Keep poking that Dragon …something is going to happen..And when they go, get ready for the crybaby’s to surface. OMG I had to pay $$$ at the pump….. The Wizard has spoken…..
This. And then you have idiots saying the fine should be BILLIONS. What a joke. Like we don’t already pay too much for gas because of this state’s stupid overregulation.
Lol what a croc
That is like 2 dollars to them
Your watch dogs appear to be
Benefiting and upholding to chevron
For any violation the amount should be hundreds of millions
A few hundred k
It costs way more to even investigate and pursue and draft paper work
A disgrace and waste of time as money and a huge slap in the face to those who believe that their Utopia of liberalism is doing anything about the environment but collecting taxes for it and siding with the polluter
Wow the dem voters cry and moan about big business and how others not dems
want to destroy and pollute
They now have huge evidence their corrupted liberals are doing nothing but lining their pockets with tax money and refinery money
Lol
Oh but if I bury my head in the sand everything is fine and safe and by voting for smooth talking liberals
They will save me and the environment and shame any other parties who I Am not supposed to like
Ahhh liberal watchdogs doing what they are supposed to do
Take tax money and party with the defendant
Too funny and not a movie this is actually happening
Blatant corruption
They don’t even hide it anymore
Let’s see here.
That fine should equate out to an increase of about a nickel a gallon forever.
Thanks, Bay Area Air management.
If someone had 33 violations of burning in their wood stove they would get 33 years in jail and their home taken!
This is just another flimsy action by a feckless California government bureaucracy to try to make themselves look and feel important. The consumers will pay for it, and the bureaucrats will pocket the money. In the end, nothing will change.
Dan.. That land has a lot of value..Beautiful Views…They would probably sell it to a flea bag independent owner.
This is coming from the same people who regulate cow farts. Here’s your sign!
Why do the hot air nazis always pick on Chevron? What about the other 4 bay area refineries, plus Dow chemical?
speaking of fleabag owners
gavin newscum
is proposing demifornia enter into the hotel business to house bums
ooooohhh yeah this just got better ……
liberal theories always find a way of politicians pocketing tax dollars
and raising taxes ….to boot
doesn’t take a wizard to figure out were are getting even more screwed by the liberal agenda more than ever ….
just force everyone to house a bum ….yeah that’s the ticket
Per usual, government gets the money, we get the cancer
Last I checked, Chevron made 14.8 Billion in earnings last year.
Them getting a fine of $150,000 for safety violations is less than a drop in the bucket. This is the equivalent of you making 50k/yr and paying a fine of less than a nickle.
You have to look at downstream earnings (and realize their portion – which is not itemized), and compare the risk/reward. They have extreme risk to community safety/health, with limited earnings potential. One little accident is shipping, and the party is over. As far as bay area refineries go, they’re one of the better ones. And keep in mind, they were there since like 1903? The community was built around them…
Okay, go ahead and start the attacks…. 😉
How much of this goes to those who were harmed by these violations? Nothing. It’s just a form of extortion for the benefit of BAAQMD.
Who would “those who were harmed by these violations” be, exactly?
Since it doesn’t say and they are “air quality violations,” my best guess would be those with respiratory problems (asthma, chronic bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, etc.) living in Richmond downwind of the Chevron refinery. I’m pretty sure people in Marin County don’t have the rates of asthma seen in Richmond.
