56 additional prisoners on Monday were ordered released from the Santa Rita Jail in Dublin in an effort to lower the risk that the coronavirus will spread through the jail, Alameda County court officials said.

Alameda County Superior Court Judge Tara Desautels issued three orders releasing 15, 20 and 21 people.

Fifteen people each had 90 days or fewer to serve of the felony sentences. The court deems their sentences served.

Under the two other orders, bail was reduced to zero.

Since the coronavirus crisis began, the court has released 334 people from Santa Rita Jail in addition to others released through the court’s pre-arraignment review process and pre-trial risk assessment program.

Since March 1, the jail population is down 28 percent to 1,869 people from 2,597. Fifteen people at Santa Rita Jail had contracted the coronavirus as of Friday.

Santa Rita has 14 known cases of the virus, which is more cases than some towns/cities in the Bay Area have. There are 12 inmate cases and 2 employee cases so far.

The virus doesn’t care which side of jail cell a person is on, and doesn’t care if a person is wearing prisoner’s garb or a uniform.

Covid is not the flu. The article you linked to talked about fatalities, but didn’t mention people whose breathing is so impaired they need a respirator. Covid can damage a person’s lungs for the rest of their life, while the flu cannot do that.

The article also mentions that the preconditions that lead to fatalities can be as simple as high blood pressure or heart disease. In the US, 25% of adults have high blood pressure. Heart disease is not rare either.

Why weren’t visitations stopped back in February??
What a shame that Prisoners get treated better than those in elderly care facilities.

Releasing felons? A democrat nocturnal emission. Why not put tents in the prison yard and give every inmate a tent, sleeping bag and battery powered lantern and they can pretend they’re camping in their backyard. Social distancing.

Great idea!
