Gov. Newsom Urges Residents To Shelter-At-Home On Easter

by CLAYCORD.com

Gov. Gavin Newsom reminded residents across the state to abide by state and regional shelter-in-place orders during Easter weekend and continue practicing health and safety protocols like physical distancing.

State health data has shown that movement of residents in all 58 of the state’s counties has decreased compared to one month ago. Newsom encouraged residents across the state to maintain that trend as long as possible, particularly during the holiday weekend.

“The future happens inside of us,” he said during his daily briefing on the novel coronavirus. “It’s decisions, not conditions, that will determine the fate and future of this modeling. It’s your individual decisions.”

State health officials have noted that state modeling has shown California is beginning to bend its curve of coronavirus cases, but also extending the peak of a surge in cases expected this summer as a result.

Newsom said the state is close to releasing modeling data about when residents may be allowed to resume activities like going to restaurants and bars again, even in modified fashion.

“I know all of us, developing some anxiety and cabin fever, want to get out,” Newsom said. “Let’s continue to hold the line and let’s just do this together. Give us a few more weeks to see where these trend lines go and then we’ll be talking a lot more,” about returning to normalcy.

Health officials around the state have confirmed a total of 19,472 coronavirus cases, including 541 deaths, according to Newsom. In addition, roughly 21,000 people are in hospitals throughout the state and 1,145 are in intensive care due to the virus.

In Kentucky, I believe, the governor is having police log license plates at churches violating the quarentine order to issue misdemeanors and mandatory 2-week home isolation for offenders. Newsom should do the same.

In the interest of national health and safety, the government may suspend certain rights to facilitate the safety of the public due to a present danger. I’m sure you were eager to suspend your rights after 9/11, and now we’re in an actual, present danger for everyone. But who cares about that right, fake “virus”? No, its better the church goers can go handle their snakes or speak in tongues and then go to the stores and spread the virus to everyone – it’s their right and freedoms! It’s not their fault they kill others by coughing on produce, it’s the others fault for not believing in Jesus to save them from the disease.

Your rights only extend as far as your fist from my nose, same can be equated to a disease. If you’re not willing to be inconvenience for a bit of time so we can all be healthy and happy, not sure what to say other than you may be a psychopath.

S April 11, 2020 - 10:44 PM - 10:44 PM

The Kentucky Governor did say it; that license plates would be recorded. Watched the press conference.. Didn’t paste link here, I think it is copyrighted, but you can search it… it as said in about the first 30 seconds…

But hey, I didn’t go… somebody; I forgot who, borrowed my car…

I’ve spent some time in China, they have a number of positives which could be applied here for our better. They are far from perfect, but we could learn a thing or two from them – as we could from so many countries.

I understand nuance may be a hard concept for some, but, surprise! You can be critical of a government but acknowledge the things they get right, without being a supporter or propagandist, it’s all in measuring the good and bad. I should know, I’ve been doing it for 20+ years in regards to the US. I loathe Pooh-bear and spent a fair amount of time in Hong Kong working for Hanjin, and fully support the independence movement, doesn’t mean I am black and white on my take of the Peoples Republic. Perhaps you should get out more, meet people from outside your neighborhood, and critically consider alternatives to the status-quo we’ve been programed to accept blindly as perfect.

Joatmeal April 12, 2020 - 9:07 AM - 9:07 AM

@JayJay – Realize you are trying to get through to people who have likely never been outside the U.S., unless you’re counting that long weekend in Cabo. People should travel to China just to see how fast we’re falling behind. For example, Shanghai and Beijing have subways that are 4x busier than BART, run on-time, are much, much cleaner and the stations are more technically advanced. And it costs 50 cents to ride. China is progressing while we are mired in political divide and our celebrity obsession. With regard to education, it seems the Chinese are focusing on an educated society while we are struggling to graduate students with a meaningful high school diploma. Don’t get me wrong, I have no interest in living in a country like China with their governmental control over the people. But you can’t make a blanket statement like China bad, U.S. good.

One thing that always makes me chuckle is the Spare the Air Day comments. The air quality in China is horrendous and they rightfully should be criticized for it. We have a government entity trying to prevent the same situation here and a small but vocal community state they are going to do everything they can to increase pollution on STAD’s. Maybe these people have more in common with the Chinese government than they’d care to admit.

That is NOT how things work in AMERICA. We don’t let small groups of unelected “medical professionals” dictate our rights. America is much better then most countries because of our bill of rights and the freedoms we hold. You can attempt to undermine our constitutional core all you want. Lots of people have over the last 200 years. We ARE the center of the free world. Everyone wants what we have. Your straight up lying and attempting to bend minds into believing living in a dictatorship is ok under a set of false circumstances that unelected “pandemic” people got wrong to begin with. Keep trying jay jay

I know a self-employed businessman who has traveled the world and even has stories of hiring armed escorts so he can go into the backroads of third world countries. If I wanted to hire some gunmen in a jeep in a third world country, he might be a good resource, but when it comes to religion and politics and social issues he is about as wise as the next person in line at Safeway. I do not believe the path to enlightenment is hanging around the docks of a Hanjin container ship. And if someone had to go to China to figure out BART is ridiculous, they are beyond hope in figuring things out.

Joatmeal April 12, 2020 - 1:11 PM - 1:11 PM

@Sam Roth

I never said I was superior to anyone. All I said was to get out there and and see it for yourself. It may change how you see the country and the world. We are the center of the free world for very good reasons. But times are changing. China is flush with (our) cash and they are investing in themselves. I doubt their political structure will work long term, but for now they are swooping in and making fast-friends with the countries and organizations we are alienating. There’s no subversion and I’m not advocating for communism or advocating for dictatorship. (Not sure if you’re aware but they are different) All I’m saying is get to know the world a little better. Communication technology has done a lot to level the playing field and we, as a nation, must recognize China is closing the gap. You can demonize them all you want, but that doesn’t change the reality of the world.

Joatmeal April 12, 2020 - 2:21 PM - 2:21 PM

I completely agree, hanging around a Chinese shipping terminal isn’t going to tell you much, except the ships are leaving full and coming back empty. Also, you completely missed my point when I compared BART to the Shanghai subway.

Concerned April 11, 2020 - 9:44 PM - 9:44 PM

The safety and benefit of the public out weighs your Easter Traditions. The general public’s well being has always been the top priority.

If there’s been an order to not gather in large groups, and you decide to ignore that order, then you’re out right putting yourself at risk; which quite frankly the government doesn’t care about.

Go walk on the edge of a ledge, juggle some knives, or live your life with whatever amount of risk you want; the government doesn’t care until you either hurt yourself, put other peoples lives at risk, or unless you’re breaking an existing law.

That is the differentiating factor in all this. This is not something where you are putting only yourself at risk, but you might be putting others at risk. And quite frankly, if one of the holiest churches in the world (Jerusalem’s Church of the Holy Sepulchre) has closed its doors for the first time since the Black Plague in order to not have a large gathering due to Covid-19, maybe you should start taking it as serious as they are.

https://www.jpost.com/israel-news/jerusalems-church-of-the-holy-sepulchre-closes-amid-coronavirus-fears-622370

This is not a religious rights problem, nor is it a citizens rights problem, yet it is a public health problem. The only reason our numbers are astronomically lower than other parts of the country are because it’s working. And the repeated extensions are to avoid having another surge in cases.

Realistically, they’re going to extend it to at least mid-May, and that really sucks. We all want to go back to work. We all want to socialize with our friends. We all want to go visit our families. It sucks, but it’s working.

Here’s a great photo to sum things up:

Jayjay, It always amazes me, just because you have something good to say about other countries, you get jumped on, with stupid comments, like why don’t you move there, etc.
You are so right I have lived in 4 countries, included my native Denmark and of course the US. Most countries have something to contribute, just because you like something about other counties does not mean you want to move there, such a closed minded attitude. I don’t like the Chinese government, nor do I trust them, but that does not mean they cannot be right on some issue. By the way I see many on here on Claycord that complain plenty about the US, and especially California and our governor, perhaps we should suggest they move to a more conservative state, but even conservative states have liberals in them, so they might be stuck.

I worked for 9 years at Macy’s in Palo Alto, because of the University, Google and Facebook, we had lots of customer’s from China, they were always pleasant to deal with, spend lots of money, I hope some day China will be democratic for the sake of the people.

I’ve circumnavigated this globe twice, been to close to a hundred countries, been caught up in all sorts of turmoils, and met amazing people and ideas throughout it all and yet, it so pains me that my “countrymen” are so stuck up with this concept that America is perfect, that they fail to even consider what other countries are doing right and what we are doing wrong. But alas, no, they(other countries) are wrong, communist, criminal hellholes, that should be ignored! If only, we, as a country could move past this mindset and separate the chaff from the wheat stage from the global stage, we could literally be that shining city on the hill, but no, we’re too pig headed to admit any faults and implement goods that other places have already figured out. I’m afraid it won’t be in my lifetime, but hopefully we can get our act together before it’s too late.

The mask is a little confusing, it does not give your full protection, stay a distance from other people does. Go ahead and go on with your life, but stay 6 feet or more away from me, I value my life too much to gamble with it.
My understanding of Christianity, is that if you are a Christian and believe in God you can pray anywhere and God will hear you.
I’m not really religious, but I respect other people’s religion. I will however pray next time I venture out that I don’t run into someone who can spread the virus and for selfish reasons has decided “to get on with their life”. Happy Easter

Gittyup April 13, 2020 - 11:13 PM - 11:13 PM

ZZ April 11, 2020 - 9:47 PM - 9:47 PM

If this goes on until May 23-24 do you think the same restrictions will apply to the Muslim religion during Eid al fitr?

Concerned April 11, 2020 - 10:33 PM - 10:33 PM

It definitely will. But keep in mind, these restrictions are not geared toward any specific faith or event. They are strictly geared towards the public safety of all. Many Mosques have already closed their doors to large prayer gatherings in response to covid-19.

Pray at home, partake in your religious traditions at home, do the best with the situation you’re in. You’re religious beliefs, faith, and practice are not restricted to your respective holy books or religious gathering sites. Your beliefs and practice are held within yourself. For sure they’re going to keep these restrictions active if they extend it through May.

@ Hanne Jeppesen I appreciate your comportment. Personally, I love a good debate on a topic, and I am not above being persuaded to change my view. In fact, one of my proudest things as a father is that I have raised my children to be able to show when their old man is wrong.

I share your frustration with the cheap barbs, non sequitur slights, and ad hominem attacks that often come after expressing an opinion on Claycord. I’m all for the fight, but when someone responds to a well-articulated argument with “then move to China”, it’s like showing up to a debate and your opponent is a toddler throwing dirt clods. I’m actually a HIGHLY proficient xxxx-talker myself, but I didn’t think that’s what we’re all doing here. Those are skills left over from when I was thirteen, when we traded insults for sport. I’m pushing 60 now, and I was under the distinct impression that most of us on here were in that range, so it’s always disappointing to be under pressure to revert to a lower form of discourse.

By the way, I enjoy your dispatches from the Stanford Shopping Center. I grew up a stone’s throw from there, but I failed at life so now I live in the “BayPoint of the Bay Area”, Claycord. See what I did there? I insulted 100,000+ people, PLUS myself, and didn’t slight any of the fine folks from the Middle Kingdom.

In the state of Michigan the governor just banned anyone from fishing in their motorboats. You can still fish in a kayak, a canoe or anything else as long as it does not have a motor. This is asinine!
The governor of Michigan is a facist!

commoncents April 12, 2020 - 4:20 PM - 4:20 PM

@ Bobfished – likely because the people with motors weren’t “fishing” but having beer bashes and not maintaining the social distancing. You see how many doctors, nurses and first responders have died in Michigan or gotten the virus? My relative is a first responder there. If these “Don’t tread on me” goofballs want to endanger there own lives, I don’t give a flying “F” but then if they get sick – don’t call 911 and don’t go to the hospital to endanger the lives of the doctors and nurses. Same goes for here.

Jojo Potato April 12, 2020 - 5:44 PM - 5:44 PM

Bobfished : there are good reasons why Michigan is restricting motorized fishing boats. To safe you the trouble I will quote from their DNR site.

“The DNR has received many reports about heavy use of boat launches across the state and the subsequent congregation of people at these launches in violation of social distancing requirements, and in a manner that threatens public health.”

Does that make Governor Whitmer a fascist? Not to me.

Bobfished April 12, 2020 - 9:37 PM - 9:37 PM

Old Fart, Ha, ha. Yes Stanford is nice and I loved my customers, as I do my customer’s at Sun Valley. The Stanford customers were nice, but a little more demanding than here, and management was a little more accommodating with regards to returns etc. I also loved that every week we had many international customers. I lived in Foster City for years, when my daughter went off to college I moved to Benicia. As much as I liked working at Stanford I’m not eager to move to the Peninsula, it is so hyped up. If I could afford to live anywhere I would probably choose Benicia, it is a friendly town, it is easy to get up to the wine country, if you want to go to Tahoe you are already out of the worst of Bay Area traffic, besides I like that is close to the water, suppose that’s the Viking in me.

I also appreciate the rest of your comments, I absolutely agree. Liking something about other countries and be a little critical of the US, is not the same as wanting to move to another country nor is it the same as disliking US. I think I voiced this opinion in another post. Happy Easter.

The leadership of each individual church should determine if they hold Easter services at the church facility.

Maintain the 6-foot distancing, just like other facilities are doing that remain open. Have an online simulcast for those who prefer to stay home, as has been done for the last few weeks. Seems to me that many of you providing comments that the church should not congregate are assuming people will sit side-by-side and shake hands, which is an arrogant assumption.

The government should stay out of trying to influence how a church chooses to conduct itself. It’s up to the church.

Quarantine is when you restrict the movement of a sick person, tyranny is when you restrict the movement of a healthy person.

@ Anon – hey dude, I’d agree with that if you couldn’t spread the crap to 50 other people. If you think this is tyranny and a hoax and you get sick – just stay at home, don’t call 911 and don’t go to the hospital which endangers our first responders, doctors and nurses. They didn’t agree to die for your right to be a “patriot.” When they find you, the paramedics will just call the police and they’ll take care of the body. You of course have the right to be buried in a “Don’t Tread on Me” T-shirt.

50? More than that. As long as people are back at work spreading the disease, including (then) in your local grocery stores, there WILL BE more illness and deaths that could have been avoided. And don’t forget about (for those that survive) the numerous and hefty hospital
bills that you’ll be responsible for. Across this country an average daily hospital bill exceeds $4200. Chew on that (workers in a hurry to return before it’s safe to) while you’re exposing yourself and others to this very serious and deadly disease.
