SHELTER, Inc. announced today that it will operate a temporary homeless shelter in Concord and is expanding homeless prevention services to keep more people in their homes during the COVID-19 public health crisis.
In partnership with Contra Costa County Health, Housing and Homeless Services, SHELTER, Inc. will operate a 65-SRO (Single Room Occupancy) homeless shelter at the Premier Inn on Concord Ave. (near Chili’s).
The shelter will operate for at least four months to help slow down the spread of COVID-19.
“As the virus spreads and takes its toll on people throughout California, our nation, and around the world; it is more important than ever for SHELTER, Inc. to continue providing these critically needed human services safety net to the most vulnerable in our communities”, said CEO John Eckstrom.

Might as well. It’s pretty much been a homeless and drug addict hangout anyway.
You forgot prostitution..
These rooms were formerly funded by all of the stolen bikes in Concord. Now the taxpayers are taken for a ride.
yes, gather them all in close proximity to each other. great idea
Always my ray of sunshine….
Very confusing opening a temporary shelter to keep more people in their homes during COVID 19 crisis. One thing good about the crisis is no more ROBO calls.
Are they going to be charged the usual hourly rate ?
No joke Wizard.
A lot of homeless get checks (SSI, SDI, Retirement) and can easily pay some amount. I would even guess that a few might have quite a sizeable bank account.
I presume this stay will now include meals delivered and free housekeeping. Gotta have toilet paper at least.
@Jimmy: Bank accout size is irrelevant, as you never rely on that as your regular income, as your savings would soon run out then. That’s why SSI is flawed, because thwy make sure you have $2,000 or less in your account for a single person before you qualify, yet you can own a $1,000,000 house and that is fine.
And if I were homeless and they wanted to charge me, I would just decline the offer of a motel room.
It is also called “SSDI”.
Why does the state not use Kmarts? And the city of Concord use the government housing thats empty off Willow Pass?
Because Kmart does not have showers or enough bathrooms, and you cannot isolate people in an open space..
There are many people really need and appreciate a nice place to stay and a place to shelter in.
It’s just that so many homeless are terribly disrespectful of other people’s property and may cause problems for not only the hotel owners but the police and fire department too.
The government has trouble with finding solutions for individuals.
They can only paint with a large wide brush.
That’s why the government is incapable of managing anything successfully.
The rules are if they leave their room, they lose it. Not only will it clean up the streets they will be isolated 1 person to a room. Maybe with any luck some can detox and try to find a better way to live.
I thought it already was
Me too!
this absolutely cracks me up…there will be no change. this “hotel” is already known as “tweaker inn” is the state of california going to actually monitor who is being given a room? drug tests?
Is that the one they used to call the Sleazy Eight?
It sure did…back in 1989 I flew up here from southern cal every week and back home at the end of the week. Did that for about a year. Have been in practically everyone of those rooms. Dump then and dump now.
No Cowellian. That would be the No tell, Motel.
This places already a total dump. A known establishment for drugs, prostitution and other crimes. The homeless belong there along with the rest of the low lifes.
I think the homeless are getting the worst part of that deal.
Wonderful
Wow such caring people in the city I’ve lived and grown up in my whole life!? Y’all should be ashamed of the way you are taking about these individuals. What if that was you?! Seriously how is it that people have become so rude and dismissive of people being in hard times. Get over yourselves and get out of your glass house because sooner or later it’ll get shattered from all the rocks you dared everyone to throw.
Nice job of Virtue Signaling, Rhiannolynn!
I dunno, Just Wow!, I kinda gotta go with Rhiannonlynn on this one. Personally, I’ve been fired, been real sick, been homeless, been dumped by my gal, had my car stolen, found myself on the wrong side of the law, and even drunk way too much a few times, just never at the same time! Just because I’ve done a fairly good of keeping my life in order doesn’t mean I can’t understand how someone else could drive their life into a ditch.
Those among us that need help are not always the most sympathetic characters. That’s probably an understatement. But I think collectively we have an obligation to not just let people rot in the gutter. That’s not the kind of America I grew up in.
I’ll give it 3 weeks and the homeless will
Burn the place down
If SHELTER, Inc. is running it, they will have to have an income. They won’t help you unless you have income.
The police have always went in there and looked at the registry and I am sure that will continue.
I hope they prioritize families, veterans and disabled.
You say that if prior it was a 4 or 5 star hotel. They’re simply housing what’s typically been housed there before. So excellent choice!!
Maybe its a good thing at keast there part of a solution and doing some thing positive in the community instead of being negative and not trying to be part of stop running your mouths and be part of the solution and help to make are county better
How do I apply cuz I need a place to stay
May God bless and protect the housekeepers
Ok didn’t know it was disabled and working people. May God bless everyone.
Is that the same place that was known as the go-to spot for men cheating on their wives back in the 80s and 90s?
How do you get info on getting into one of the temp. Shelter in place hotel facilities?
I believe Newsom said homeless with Covid-19, aged homeless who are susceptible to catching Covid-19, and disabled homeless would be the first to be housed.
Others will probably get trailers.
Call 211 to see if you can get into the Premier Inn. Shelter, Inc. is in charge.
This works out well since this location is walking distance for most of Concord’s homeless population. Some won’t even need to cross the street.
I agree sadly, they will destroy and burn down the hotel in no time. IT was a dump before and it will be even in worse shape after they leave if it is still standing. Many of the homeless want to live like they do because they do not want to adhere to rules the rest of us follow for what ever their reason is. Plus they get handouts left, right and sideways. Why would they change.
I want the state to list all of the hotels and motels that they are letting the homeless stay in as I will never, I repeat, Never, stay at those businesses.
I know that those businesses need the revenue but I am not going to expose myself or my family to any type of disease or infection that may linger.
Benzets correct those affected those that have been exposed to those affected and the elderly with underlying health conditions
“Temporary“, right! Good luck taking this housing away in the near future. Headlines will read, “California to displace hundreds of homeless.” Not going to happen. This is Newsom’s way of solving our homeless crisis disguised as a “quarantine.”
The good news is the government will be paying to room bills and not our stolen credit card information like normal.
As a positive, they might all get it and die. Thus solving the homeless problem.
Most of you are out of your minds on this homeless motel drug addict crap. You don’t need to put a homeless person in a room to shelter in place first of all. So knock it off! Just stay put, and wash your hands at the water source, outhouses should have soap and water, or a faucet that is available at this time. Since most people should be home, then that is perfect for the homeless people left outside. Everyone needs to follow social distancing. That means stay to yourself and don’t share things unless have to. Be careful with cigarettes. Contaminated fingers touch the smokes when taken out of package and then to the mouth. Lots of people smoke. Good time to quit since we all are sheltered in place, right? You’ll be able to detox at home or where you are. Also, welcome to the new age everyone! Do you actually believe all homeless people are no good? Think about it, you’ll be surprised who are drug addicts most likely hiding in the closet about it! Take care! Please let’s love each other! God bless us all. Happy Good Friday!!!
Lisa Pedro – your excellent comments find me speakers. This lockdown is “outing” some closet writers, investigative journalists, Prrivate Investigators, Citizen Activists – and other useful skills and talents (very much needed and appreciated at this time!).
They can’t use the old government housing off Willow Pass because it’s not safe to live in those homes.
Only the people in the Concord and Richmond Shelters get to be housed in the Premier Inn and fed three meals a day by Sunrise Bistro.
All you other homeless people in your cars and on the street, sucks to be you.
Whatever works for me,what do we do for the veterans, and those who are really without?
