And still the numbers are tens of thousands below the standard numbers of flu cases that we have each and every year yet don’t destroy the financial world markets, people’s livelihoods, jobs and pensions. So what is really going on?

@Peter What’s concerning about COVID-19 is the rate at which it’s spread across the globe and the death rate. True, the flu kills a lot of people, but it’s over a long period of time. This pandemic has ramped up in a matter of weeks.

Peter,

There are plenty of drugs that you can get from a doctor to help combat the flu.

Please list the currently available OTC or prescribed drugs that you or me can grab in case the person at work comes to the office with the COVID_19?

You two are wrong! The Gov simply fudges or manipulates statistical data as a means to an end to reach the goal they desire. By the way, Tamiflu is not considered to be effective; simply Google it and you will find this information readily available. People need to realize that their next step is compulsory vaccinations not to mention more draconian laws being implemented under the guise: “these laws are needed to protect us and are for the greater good of humanity, blah, blah, blah…”; subsequently losing all rights under the Constitution. Is that what people want? I don’t! Wake UP! You have been duped! By the way, no matter what the stock market did today, “they are going to crash it shortly and our country and world well change indefinitely as a “NEW NORMAL” and dystopian world like Orwell and Huxley wrote about is ushered in. Sadly, 99% of the populace is falling hook, line and sinker! My God, what has happened to critical thinking and common sense?

@ College

Flu Season is October through May. SARS2, the actual name of what people are calling COVID19, started in December in China, so basically the same time period. The US had it first cases in January, a minimum of 9 weeks ago, but closer to 12 … I do not consider that a matter of weeks. What you are doing is playing on words to make your cases stronger.

Yes the death rate is higher, but the number of people infected worldwide is nothing compared to the flu. Estimates of the 2018-19 flu season say over 35 million people caught it, around a half million required hospitalization and a little over 34K people died. BTW, those numbers are almost half of the 2017/18 season. So the mortality rate is much lower with the flu, but the infection rate is much higher.

@ Truth Teller
No drugs for SARS2. Also no drugs for the flu. We have a vaccine mixture to fight the most common flus, but it is a best guess. If you catch the flu, all they can give you is comfort meds …

@ Ozzie,
We will not give up trying to bring this population into the thinking crowd again and out of the world of sheep.

@parent you literally just proved me right by agreeing that the death rate is higher than the flu. Thanks. Also, stay inside, keep social distancing, I want to go back to school next year.

@Peter
People need to stop comparing this virus to the flu. They are two very different bugs that transmit, behave, and affect people in different ways. Covid is a novel virus, meaning that it has never been seen in humans before. Novel viruses are extremely serious business because nobody has an immunity and the medical community has no clue about what exactly they are dealing with.

The main ways that it is similar to the flu is that it is transmitted through droplets in the air and through physical contact. Also, it can kill you in a small percentage of the cases.

The differences are what matter. Covid has a very long incubation period. It is also often carried without symptoms. This allows the virus to be unwittingly transmitted to numerous people, who then unwittingly transmit it to others, etc. etc. So it is easy to catch and easy to spread, which by itself is no big deal. The second (and probably biggest difference) is covid’s mortality.

Right now in the US, Covid is killing around 2.5% of the people that it infects. Worldwide, the death rate is higher. Obviously it it much higher in vulnerable people like senior citizens and those with pre-existing conditions. The typical seasonal flu has a mortality below 1/10 of 1 percent. For comparison, the 1918 Spanish flu also had a 2.5% mortality. That one killed approx 40-50 Million worldwide.

Finally, the flu does not overwhelm hospitals with a zillion simultaneous cases like Covid does. Even during bad flu seasons. And when was the last time that you heard about a shortage of ventilators due to the flu? Social distancing is not about stopping the virus. It is about SLOWING the virus so that the medical facilities are stretched but not broken. Chances are that barring a vaccine, we will almost all get this thing at some point in time. You just hope that when you do, it is not severe. But if it is, you hope that there is an open ventilator with your name on it.

That’s why the world’s governments are doing what they are doing. There is a new, highly contagious virus that is now circulating. It kills 2.5% of those it infects. (BTW, that equals 187 MILLION people if left unchecked.) There is no known cure or vaccine.

“So what is really going on?”
NOW YOU KNOW.

@ college,
Yes, the death rate is higher for SARS2, but so is Cancer, smoking, DUI ,Diabetes, etc … so should we all SIP until those issues are resolved as well?

But to be included in the death rate, you do need to catch it first! You know that, right?

I want my kids to go back to school in May, I see no reason to wait till next year!

Nope, The Professor is right. The whole point of flattening the curve is not to save lives, but to hopefully spread deaths out over a longer period of time so as to not overwhelm the health care system. If we did nothing, perhaps 20% of medical staff would be down with COVID-19 and our hospitals would have to turn away people with broken bones, heart attacks, and other routine medical problems, This is why the hospital ships are at LA and NYC — they calculated they may be needed even with the shutdown. Just look at Italy. Their hospitals are barely functioning and their staff is collapsing.

@professor
Covid-19 is a novel virus; however the Coronavirus has hit humans before. In 2003, SARS hit the Humans. That was a Coronavirus. Check the CDC website I’d you want to confirm.

So, now you know!

,
Good grief, as a nation we are NOWHERE near Italy or Spain. Let me know what US hospitals are overrun right now as we are entering “peak season” as projected by the “gold standard” IHME Murray model. Just a couple weeks ago Cuomo The Sanctified was plaintively wailing about NY’s urgent need for 40K ventilations, based primarily on that very Murray model…the same one which today’s revision shows a peak need of 25K FOR THE ENTIRE UNITED STATES, with NY at 5700. Even Edwards of Louisiana had to backtrack today from his many recent comments of impending doom that they were going to run out of ventilators. Hospitals in various locales are reducing hours, doing furloughs/layoffs, just a few announced today are Freeman Health in MO, 600 in Tulsa, 900 at MUSC (Medical University South Carolina). I’ll repeat: NYC, NOLA, and Detroit do not signal what all of America will experience.

@Peter
What did I write that is incorrect? Nothing. It’s simple math.
World Population = 7.5 Billion
Everybody gets it. 2.5% die from it. =187 Million.
Let’s say only 20% get it.
7.5 Billion X 20%X 2.5%= 47 Million.
It’s simple math. The population is essentially static. Plug in whatever infection and mortality rates that you want. Voila, that is how many will die without treatment.

Try to look at this thing less emotionally and a bit more logically. Social distancing works.

@Parent.
You are somewhat correct in your snark.
SARS came around before. It was a corona virus with an 11% mortality. It jumped from bats to people just like this one.
MERS was also a corona virus. That one killed about 30% of those that it infected. It was transmitted from camels to people.
Neither of these strains is as easy to catch or stays hidden so long as the latest outbreak.
And then there is the common cold. Also a corona virus.

Those last two must not have shown up on your quick internet search. If you are trying for a gotcha moment, then FAIL. If you are trying to educate me, then please tell me something that I don’t already know.

Let me guess, you also believe that 9/11 was an “inside” job as well as Sandy Hook and countless other tragic events so that our Government could exert more control over us.

So many conspiracy theories.
So little time.

@ Professor
Snark? Did you read your initial reply to Peter? Capital letters and all. That is snarky response. I was just playing along with you …

As for my quick internet search … If you mean how I have studied and taught bioterrorism, along with other types for the last 15+ years as being ‘quick’, sure, then it was a ‘quick’ search. We have known about the coronavirus for a long time. If you check your basic household cleaners, man of them will say that they kill the coronavirus family. As a ‘professor’ you must know that the coronavirus is a family name only and that inside of a family, you can have different mutations. Many viruses have mutations which is why it makes it difficult to kill all of them.

As for your ‘Gotcha moment’, no clue what you mean. All I was trying to do was clarify the information you presented because you tried to present this a novel virus.

As for teaching you something you don’t know, I have no desire to determine to what you do and what you do not know. So, no, I will not be teaching you anything new today or anytime in the future.

@Parent
Thanks for the cogent response. No snark, I really mean it. I guess I misread your response to me as snarky. My mistake and my apology.

As to my initial response to Peter- I can’t stand anyone who spews drivel without thinking first. His initial post was simply emotion with a somewhat loaded question. I answered his question and then snarked him at the end.

His response to me just verified that his thoughts are not necessarily coming from the logical side of his brain.

Wasn’t he the guy who was on here a week or two ago spouting off that 5G was causing covid?

Anyhow, I’m over this thread and won’t respond back unless someone pops off without thinking things through a bit. I will check back, though, to see if I get an answer to my 5G question.

Sorry again, Parent. I overreacted to you.

@ Professor

No worries!

75% of the deaths in Italy had at least two co-morbidities at the time of death, yet every one of them is counted as a death due to COVID-19. Those who die after a positive test, with NO symptoms typically caused by the viruses, are listed as a death due to Coronavirus. A man in Pennsylvania admitted with a lethal head injury tested positive for Coronavirus. His death was counted as a death due to COVID-19. Without mandatory testing for antibodies (which will never happen) we’ll never know how many people were infected, and counting every death of an infected individual as a death due to COVID-19 both inflate the morbidity rate of the disease.

These numbers will never be truly accurate because of the inherent flaws of the recording methodology.

Not everyone will be tested.

Not everyone who is ill will report being ill.

Many people will never realize they are ill.

The definition of a “coronavirus related” death is ill-defined and convoluted.

I believe the national and world numbers are skewed to be harsher than reality to encourage people to take the warnings seriously.

These numbers do report the general trends and are admittedly far from complete.

I believe history will judge this sad and dangerous event more fairly than we can judge it now.

The most important thing these numbers can tell us are trends. As long as they’re consistently gathered they can make their best decisions based on the trends. You will never get absolute numbers.

@parent you literally just proved me right by agreeing that the death rate is higher than the flu. Thanks. Also, stay inside, keep social distancing, I want to go back to school next year.

Apologies, i replied to the wrong comment

I see New York’s death total from covid is at almost 5,000 as of yesterday. Do you know how that stacks up against last year’s regular flu death total. I fear we have not seen the worst of this.

Not a pleasant thought but i believe the chinese have the ability to
inadvertently come up with a virus that depopulates the world. All this time we were worried about going out like the dinosaurs. What a waste of time that was.

The dinosaurs ruled Earth for about 170 million years. Humans will be lucky if we get to 200 thousand years or about a thousandth of what the dinosaurs accomplished. Cockroaches have made it to 300 million years and are doing very well according to the Dirty Dining reports. 🪳 🪳 🪳 🪳 🪳

The fact that the Governor has “taken over” the noon news as his very own private propaganda machine is looking very suspicious. He stands up their and blabs his doctrine Monday thru Friday. making it clear that if we don’t comply, he will institute Marshall Law. It’s beginning to look like something right out of a really bad futuristic, dystopian movie.

@ Gittyup – now don’t tell me – my bet is you love the Trump Reality show on each night that preempts the local news and Sixty Minutes on Sunday…. Meanwhile the governor comes on at noon – gives updates – takes questions and then leaves…

“Meanwhile the governor comes on at noon – gives updates – takes questions and then leaves…”

One day I kept checking back every fifteen minutes or so and he was still on at 12:45 pm. Still giving his ego full rein and gesturing wildly about nothing in particular. I especially laugh at his comment “I own this!” OMG! Doe he really? Guy is an egomaniac and this is his starring moment. From what I’ve heard him say (I watched a solid 15 minutes one time), he had nothing to say, nothing new to add, was trying to impress with his big time irrelevant vocabulary, just a self-righteous and pretentious jerk. He “leaves” when he’s good and ready!

I don’t have cable. I watch the noon news on my notebook and I don’t have battery life for much else, so I don’t see Trump’s stuff.

Some Swedish hospital Do some more research and see how this drug has saved many lives

@Ann – I have been reading – other than a few anecdotal cases, I have seen no scientific data that it works. https://www.statnews.com/2020/04/06/trump-hydroxychloroquine-fact-check/

The Covid-19 infections seem to be growing at a rate right now of between 7.5% to 8.5% a day.

Fairly useless numbers without context… it’s due to increased testing, which in one day has jumped 7.5%, and what’s more important is resource burden, i.e. hospitalization rate, ICU beds, ventilators. And even the “gold standard” (haha) Murray model keeps reducing those projections.

Gosh I wonder how many people on this very forum were screaming like so many other idiots throughout the land that “Trump’s a MURDERER!!!” when he pushed back on Cuomo saying he absolutely needs 40,000 ventilators, which was based on these absurd alarmist models, and then here we are today with Murray now projecting that 25K ventilators will be needed at the peak…for the ENTIRE COUNTRY, with NY needing just 5700.

It’s this generation’s Inheritance Powder. Go out, party, mingle, have a great time, come home and help Granny’s estate suddenly become mine, mine, all mine. No waiting, no criminal charges. Risk to yourself is fairly minimal.

https://news.yahoo.com/detroit-rep-says-hydroxychloroquine-trump-211555143.html
Why not post how this drug has saved many lives instead of some hospitals stop using the drug in Sweden!

Ann some people are slow learners. If Trump is for it they are against it no matter what. They have never agreed to one thing he has done or said.

@Ricardoh. And that’s because 45has never said a truthful thing, EVER! That’s why we disagree with him. He’s spouting a “cure” that’s unproven.

Jazz man make sure if you get the virus they don’t give you hydroxychloroquine. Easy as that.

Interesting not posting my comment

As for the drug hydroxychloroquine, I listened to Michael Savage for about 15 minutes today, he was blasting Giuliani and Sean Hannity for promoting the drug, said they don’t know science. Savage is still a Trump supporter (which I’m not), but am capable of independent of thinking independently, and am not afraid to voice his disagreement.
I think his issue is with Hannity, has been for years, and of course we all know how Trump thinks Hannity walks on water.

“but am capable of independent of thinking independently”

Also quite adept at redundancy. Now if we could just noodle out how to get our comments posted in the right place.

theres not 1 million people in contra costa alone lmao theres only 7 billion people and theres 1 mil in coco county? nope this is all a heaux and the government is lying to you per usual

There are over 1,000,000 people in Contra Costa County. we are the only county in the state with a population over a million that does not have a UC or CSU school. And no, CSU East Bay-Concord campus does not count, since students still need to go to Hayward to take a number of required courses.

Congratulations F! You’ve won Math. All of it.

Rollo Obviously I didn’t edit my comment. Yes, it was a badly written sentence. I find it interesting that you comment on my grammar and where I post the reply, rather on Michael Savage’s take on the drug.
How many times do I have to explain that the reply button is not always directly under the comment I want to reply to, exasperating! I notice that I’m not the only one that does not post the comment directly under the person the want to reply to. Why are you singling me out? Because I often disagree with you?

Hanne – I don’t listen to Michael Savage, so why would I comment? That would require me to assume that your commentary is accurate and contextual.

I’m singling you out because even after having it explained to you several times, you continue to make the same mistake. That and you’ve become a prolific contributor of commentary. I disagree with a lot of people here. I know that because their replies to my commentary are easy to find. You responded to one of my replies and I didn’t see it until four days later because it was nowhere near the comment to which you were responding. Furthermore, why should I respond to, or lend any credence to, the comments from someone incapable of, or unwilling to, figure out how this works? Or someone who won’t take the time to proofread their own comments before posting? In my opinion that indicates an individual who posts commentary that is based on emotion rather than intellect. In any case, I don’t believe your commentary is difficult to follow or replete with grammatical errors. There are Claycord contributors whose commentary I skip because I just don’t want to take the time to figure out what their message is – whether I disagree with them or not.

Now, for the umpteenth time – there are original comments, which have a “reply” icon immediately underneath them. There are replies to the original comment, which do NOT have a reply icon. If you’d like to reply to the original comment OR respond to one of the existing replies to the original comment, you use the SAME reply icon in both cases. For example, in this response to you, I used the “reply” icon immediately under the original comment left by “F”. You’ve explained your confusion before. The format of the comment section as described by you is exactly the same for all users.

Rollo,

I wish you luck!

Good luck, Rollo. Clearly explained. Hope it helps!.

The problem is that nobody really knows the whole truth of anything do they? Speculation and assumption can be talked about all day long and the truth probably lies in there somewhere in some way. Did China start it to crash our economy? Is this another scare tactic to conform to a NWO? Will a vaccination contain a small microchip to track us? Has this been a way to thin out population…especially the old and homeless since they lend little to society other than a drain of cash? The list goes on and on of who, why, and where, and how. Look..we still don’t even REALLY know the truth behind the Kennedy assassinations, Marilyn Monroe’s death, and so much more. I doubt anyone in our lifetime is going to come out with the honest to God truth because it probably wouldn’t go over very well. Please don’t attack..these are just things I have read and heard. Information overload, negative and positive, is not a good thing either and that IS one truth.

Viruses exist. They have existed for a long time, and are constantly mutating through evolutionary process. We’ve had occasional pandemics long before bio-engineering, and nano-technology existed. It is accepted that that the current pandemic started with bats, and was transferred to humans through the live animal meat trade. Sick and diseased animals were kept in cages within close proximity to humans, in a commnity with little sense of food safety.

We can try to logically test conspiracy theories that are out there. China got hit hard by the virus, killing a lot of Chinese and severely damaging their economy. Given the toll the virus took on China, it’s not likely that China started the virus on purpose. It would have been a Pyrrhic action, and not logical. A viral pandemic cannot be targeted towards a specific people, and is too chaotic to control as a weapon.

Enough scientists, health experts, and researchers have access to microscopes, that if there were microchips in the vaccine, someone would find out. All it would take is one scientist to look at a vaccine sample under the microscope. Or someone in the microchip manufacturing industry would blow the whistle. It would be too vast of a conspiracy to have so many people remain silent. So it’s not at all likely or reasonable.

Try to stay healthy, eat good food, get a healthy amount of sleep, and try to stay positive. If the news is getting overwhelming, take a break from it. If you see a theory out there, try to tackle it logically, talk to other people to get opinions..

,

It’s pretty simple science.

Covid-19 is a NOVEL virus that came from a natural origin (animals) It was not synthetically produced in a lab, let alone a Chinese lab. How do we know this?

Because scientists have already determined that Covid-19 wasn’t “synthetic” and published their evidence supporting that finding in The Lancet back in February.

“Given the toll the virus took on China, it’s not likely that China started the virus on purpose.”

Agreed, but that requires the presumption that the totalitarian Chinese communist government gives a s**t about what happens to their citizens. Quite a leap.

Keep in mind that the article you linked to isn’t describing a lab that bio-engineers viruses, it is a lab that studies viruses that naturally are found in animals. The food trade theory could be wrong, and this lab theory could be right. Either way, the virus came from bats and was not constructed by scientists, which was the main point I was trying to stress.

@ ConcordNative…

Well said…the list goes on forever unfortunately. The best thing you can do is make sure your stocked up for 2-3 weeks at a time for yourself and whomever you are responsible for and then turn off the news. Since we stopped watching daily Covid-19 updates,… Anxiety rate has diminished to almost zero in my house. Lol….Amazing how that happens…..

Michigan Democrat lawmaker credits Trump’s daily briefings about hydroxychloroquine for saving her life
https://www.foxnews.com/media/karen-whitsett-trump-hydroxychloroquine-saved-my-life

@Ricardoh, speaking of “slow learners” . . .

You still cant figure out why Trump continues to “hype” and “pump” Hydroxychloroquine can you?

I guess it has never occurred to you that Trump has a FINANCIAL INTEREST in the French drug maker SANOFI. SANOFI is the maker of Plaquenil, the brand-name version of Hydroxychloroquine.

Trump’s three family trusts each have investments in a mutual fund whose largest holding was SANOFI.

Furthermore, major Republican donor Ken Fisher of Fisher Investments is one of SANOFI’s largest shareholders.

Try following the money Ricardoh.
Instead of blindly drinking the Trump “Kool-Aid”.

Doctors worldwide have reported success in treating Wu Flu patients with hydroxychloroquine, Cuomo has said it’s shown promise in NY.
TDS is so real.

Popularity and market appeal are Trump’s only trusted advisors.

This approach to the COVID problem encapsulates Trumpian thinking clearly: Find what’s popular, press that button, and hope like hell it works while continuing to sell hope to the desperate

It’s clear to see that Trump believes the efficacy of all medicines are judged by popularity such as for example ineffective but popular diet pills (e.g. 24 hour energy shots, hydroxycut, rasberry ketones). The logic is simple: if it sells, then it must work… and that must be how pharmaceudicals work. In his mind, complexity is just a bunch of uneccessary nerdy B.S. that just holds us back from the REAL truth that the market brings to light through profits.

Complexities of law, medicine, science, military science, foreign relations… hogwash! If it’s not popular and doesn’t sell, it’s worthless.

A sucker is born every minute, the saying goes. At least we know where to easily find them (hello Fox and Friends viewers!) and who is happy to lead them on the Primrose path.

Mike: I did a quick Google search and a very reliable and well known website on financial markets called Marketwatch says that Trump owns some mutual funds that have that in their holdings, and if you drill down the dollar amount of his investment equals maybe ten thousand dollars. I have mutual funds with the S&P index so I guess to you I am heavily invested in every major company? Unless you can come up with some actual large investment proof and not a mutual fund holding, then your post is just internet troll status. Actually, you seen to be trying to capture that title anyway with the purposely provocative statements and pretend outrage and contempt. Compare yourself to someone like Ozzie who says provocative things, but he does add useful information and interesting discussions like about that Georgia governor. Ozzie is interesting, you, not so much.

Drilling down the numbers tells quite a story. According to 2019 financial disclosure statements, the three Trump Family Trusts own shares of a mutual fund with principal interests in SANOFI. If each Trump Family Trust owns a maximum share, his stake in SANOFI is worth about $1,485. Righteous bucks.

actually I agree with you Rollo. I think it is silly to think there is a financial motivation for Trump to push Hydroxychloroquine. I simply think he lacks the understanding of drug development but he got on this bandwagon and now he is motivated to show his cult followers that he is truly the second coming.

He wants to claim that he is healing the sick, after all, from having tasted Tump wine he has already mastered the turning water into wine part. And of course his Stormy adventure is just as in Matthew 21:32-33

“Complexities of law, medicine, science, military science, foreign relations… hogwash! If it’s not popular and doesn’t sell, it’s worthless.

A sucker is born every minute, the saying goes. At least we know where to easily find them (hello Fox and Friends viewers!) and who is happy to lead them on the Primrose path.” – – – JWB

Remember, we are talking about a President that was bragging about the TV ratings of his press briefings, comparing them to the ratings of Monday Night Football and The Bachelor… while people are fighting for their lives and DYING.

No need to run a randomized double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial for Hydroxychloroquine when it comes to treating Covid-19.

No need to highlight a study from France published last week showing “No Evidence of Rapid Antiviral Clearance or Clinical Benefit with combination of Hydroxychloroquine and Azithromycin in Patients with Severe Covid-19 Infection:

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0399077X20300858?via=ihub&fbclid=IwAR06ImEdZmtwkBQdMFdTmd0sLpX-IZ9Nz7tETolDcCJpxdplEc6URw_2AKE

No need to be concerned about various ocular and cardiac side-effects when taking Hydroxychloroquine (ie. Plaquenil) and/or combining it with Azithromycin. No impact on one’s QT interval whatsoever. No prolonging the QT interval of the heart and risking arrhythmia. No risk whatsoever to people with cardiac issues.

As Trump said, “What have you got to lose?”
