The “Water Cooler” is a feature on Claycord.com where we ask you a question or provide a topic, and you talk about it.
The “Water Cooler” will be up Monday-Friday at noon.
Today’s question:
QUESTION: When you go out to the store, hospital, restaurants, etc. do you wear a mask and/or gloves? Also, do you think a majority of the people around you are taking enough precautions to refrain from getting the coronavirus?
Talk about it.
I think the use of face masks and gloves can raise alarm for some. We don’t know if you’re infected or not.
I get what you’re saying…but people who are infected are supposed to stay home.
I am I said, People who are infected can be infectious without knowing they’re infected, or before they have symptoms and suspect or know they’re infected. It would be nice if we could make like a first world country and test everyone so we could have a more accurate picture of what’s really going on here.
Silva,
Test everyone? Do you mean those who believe they have it or the whole population?
I don’t wear gloves, because I don’t want to cross contaminate anything For example…as a nurse, if I use gloves to attend to a patient, I must put on a new pair before moving on to another patient….otherwise I am cross contaminating. I use a sanitizing wipe to clean my hands when I get into my car. I do however wear a mask…because it keeps me from touching my face. There are many people who are not practicing social distancing and that is very worrisome to me. I however, don’t have a problem telling people to please step away from being too close to me.
That is helpful. Thank you.
I haven’t gone to a store since last weekend, and I wore gloves for that. No one else was in it, so it worked out well for me.
It should be face mask, gloves, AND goggles.
Aerosolized particles and viral droplets can enter your mucosa membrane (that means eyes, nose, and mouth).
Stay alert. Stay alive.
You are 100 percent correct. The droplets of the virus stay in the air for I heard three hours. I am not sure if that is accurate, why play Russian Roulette? Scary damn time we are in.
I just got back from the grocery store and some people were wearing a mask but not many. People are trying to keep a distance but it’s not six feet, more like two or three feet. In a check out line it’s nearly impossible to keep a six foot distance.
Myself, I do not wear a mask or gloves. I avoid touching my face and when I got home I washed my hands, changed my clothes, put the groceries away, and washed my hands again. The groceries will remain put away for a couple of days, and by then any germs that may have hitched a ride on them will be dead.
I was in Safeway and Trader Joe’s yesterday and most people in line maintained 6′ distance. Shopping in the aisles was more problematic and some people wouldn’t move forward or to one side so others could pass.
I haven’t seen anyone displaying cold/flu-like symptoms while shopping, but it sounds like you can have this virus and transmit it with never feeling ill, or before symptoms show. My guess is that we are going to see it spread through the general population because it has likely been in the U.S since January because the Communist Chinese Government lied to the rest of the world, and the WHO wouldn’t listen to warnings from Taiwan.
No I don’t…I wash my hands after touching things
People are leaving blue/purple gloves all over the street and it’s pretty disgusting. Shows their mentality too.
I saw gloves all over the ground in front of the ATM machines at Wells Fargo on Clayton Road. How stupid are these people. Thanks for leaving your germ ridden gloves for the rest of us.
I have sensitive skin. I wear gloves sometimes to give my hands a rest from all the washing. Having dry damaged skin on my hands could cause breaks in the skin could that be a possible entry point for the virus.
I will carefully put on a clean pair of latex gloves. Then I grab my keys and wallet, and go out and do whatever chore I’m accomplishing. Upon re-entering my residence I set keys and stuff aside, I then CAREFULLY take off my gloves to wad them inside out. The gloves then go in the trash.
I follow proper glove procedure, which is a slow, thoughtful, methodical action. During the time I had my gloves on, nothing has touched my hands and they are just as clean when the gloves come off. But this is only true if they are removed following proper procedure. If I make a mistake, then I will wash my hands.
I’d wear gloves if I had any, since the stuff lives so long on items and surfaces. I don’t wear my mask, the filters are pink, and my conscience is bothering me for keeping it. I’ve seen some people all suited up, mostly not, but I haven’t been out much.
No. But I carry a couple disinfectant wipes to open doors with.
No gloves or mask, just disinfectant wipes. I’ve always carried them. Avoiding stores unless absolutely necessary keeping in mind it’s a breeding ground, and six feet away at the grocery store is almost impossible.
For the first time in my life I don’t get out much, If I’m every in a position where I need to get a life, I’ll have some experience. Maybe I’ll pitch a tent in the backyard and pretend we’re camping. I need a vacation…
@silva…Being a “1st world country”, how do you propose we “test everyone”???
Perhaps we should start with all the Spring Breakers in Florida, or maybe the Mardi Gras revelers in New Orleans. Curious George is “curios” how you would get that done in a timely, efficient and cost effective matter??
I have a bathroom travel bag I used to take when I was traveling. I put it back into the car the other day. It has everything I need from gloves to wipes to sanitizer gel, and a roll of TP.
I used the gloves when I went to the gas station last week. Took them off and tossed them in the trash before I got back into the car. Used some of the sanitizer then and the wipes on the steering wheel. I have a mask too just in case.
I think wearing a mask and gloves is going a little too far, just like I thought it was hilarious when people wore masks during the wild fires. Regular surgical masks don’t protect you anyway (they protect others). You need a properly fitted N95 mask to protect yourself.
Also, the Chinese were insulted when American athletes wore masks during the Beijing Olympics.
I have breathing problems on good air days. Wearing a mask was the only way I could go out during the wildfires without being sick for several days afterwards. I’m pretty sure I wasn’t the only one. There was likely some pretty nasty stuff in that.
@Silva: Good point. I did not realize that.
Masks are effective. If everyone wore a mask this would be stopped nearly cold. Look up how the Czech republic has encouraged every citizen to wear masks, to stitch them up at home if necessary out of cloth, as even a cloth mask is very helpful and will filter 50% approximately. Iron/steam/atomic washer setting it when you get home and it’s sterile again.
During the wildfires, I was forced to go out by a doctor’s office or pay for not cancelling the appointment 24 hours ahead of time. I told them I didn’t have the proper mask and was visiting for chronic respiratory problems. Duh! With only a surgical mask, and I can tell you it was inadequate. I had to go back on meds, but, of course, that keeps them in business.
I prepared to go grocery shopping with a extensive plan in place. I wore a mask & gloves, carried hand sanitizer & wipes, & made sure my hair was out of my face. When I got to the 1st store I was shocked at how many people were living their lives like nothing was wrong. I used self check out if at all possible, put my groceries in the trunk, & sanitized my gloves before going to the next store. The reason for going to multiple stores is due to not being able to find all that was needed due empty shelves. After hitting 5 stores I headed home for the next phase. I put all the groceries on the porch and as I took each item out of the bag I thoroughly wiped it down before the person waiting at home brought it in the house. After I finished disinfecting all the groceries I stripped down, put my clothes in a plastic bag to be washed immediately, left my shoes outside, disinfected my keys and credit card case, & went straight to the shower. The new norm. Crazy!
Smart !! You’re way of doing things will prevent you from catching the virus or flu. Others, who are not taking precautions, only increase their odds. Take for example concord ygnacio, who commented on this page. This person thinks it’s hilarious when people wear mask during fire season. Ignorance at its best! Wearing a mask and gloves is not going to far. If everyone took extra precautions, we wouldn’t be in this predicament.Stay smart!
I go to grocery stores, and the pharmacy. I have been to Trader Joe’s Never ever to Costco or my small Safeway here at Rossmoor. I wear my mask and gloves and bathe myself in hand sanitizer at all times. I practice social distancing and shame myself after I go out. Scared stiff. The silent invisible monster is out there.
The gloves and masks are so the alarmists can take credit for it not speading, not the fact that its not going to spread anyway. They will try to take credit for saving the day, when they caused so much loss.
It would never occur to me for taking credit for the Virus not to spread because I was personally protected. That is one weird thing to think of people!! You sound like a person who has far too much time on your hands to even visit such a bizarre thought. Good grief.
Gloves are just the same as your hands people! The germs stay on the gloves just as much as on your hands. They do not protect you like you think they do. But do what you feel you need to do. Whatever makes you feel better. To those who are shocked to see some of us not living up to your “new” standards, then so be it. We are here for a good time not a long time and let this be a lesson to leave our WILDLIFE ALONE!
Amen to leaving the wildlife AND their habitats alone!!
Is it now ok to wear a full latex body suit and hood in public?
Asking for a friend😉
I practice the usual precautionary measures. Distancing, not breathing on others, washing hands and wiping surfaces. The only store I go to are for groceries.
I miss my friends.
One can only clean, sanitize, text, e.mail and watch so much tv.
Can’t go to church.
No going out to eat. No movies. That means no Pop corn.
Went to safeway to get allergy meds. I wore gloves and took them off right after I got out of the store.
Long ways to go. In the meantime, still make good use of this “time out”
Thank you Claycord for the opportunity to be able to share.
Be well everybody!
I wear a mask when shopping but don’t also wear gloves until I’m at work. I share equipment and supplies with many others. Frequently dousing my hands in sanitizer is quickly sapping the life out of my skin, so gloves are nice to provide a barrier between not just germs, but the overall filth I work with anyway. Not talking about the people 😉
I know the N95 mask doesn’t guarantee protection, but I’m trying to lessen my chances of unknowingly picking something up and then taking it home and over to my elderly loved ones when I do wellness checks and merchandise drop-offs. I’m not an alarmist, I’m just taking precautions that help me sleep better. Also, it’s a good way to keep some people from coming too close if they think I’m already sick!
Whatever the risk is, it’s being stretched to an even doomier and gloomier scenario…or gloomier and doomier
I wear both gloves and a face mask.
I wear nothing, just my birthday suit.
I don’t wear a mask or gloves. An inadequate mask might do more harm than good, capturing and retaining bacterial and viruses which could then infect you. If you don’t know how to properly use rubber gloves, same thing. I am trying to practice physical distancing, walking through the neighborhood as often as possible, working in my back yard, etc…
Sounds like Vitamin D (you make it by being in the sun), exercise, fresh air, sunlight (breaks down viruses faster), good diet are our best bet until a vaccine can be traduced. BTW- Will anti-vaccination folks want or be able to avoid getting a vaccination when one becomes available?
I wear gloves at the stores and discard before I get to my car, but still use wipes on the cart and and when done, wipe down whatever I touched (card, reusable bag, wallet, zipper pull on purse, etc.). And I still wipe my steering wheel for good measure and wash my hands when I’m home. I keep a good distance from others when at the store or on hiking trails, so I don’t wear a mask. I actually got ‘shamed’ on Instagram recently by a friend in Europe because I was not wearing a face mask outside. I tried to explain that no one is around, and if they are, they are not close, but she wasn’t having it. Thinks I should have a mask on no matter what. I don’t agree and would prefer those who truly need one should have access to them.
