Contra Costa County Will Cancel Some Late Payment Penalties For Property Taxes

The Contra Costa County Treasurer-Tax Collector’s Office is reminding homeowners of the April 10 property tax delinquency deadline and said it will cancel late payment penalties and interest for people affected by the novel coronavirus.

The Treasurer-Tax Collector’s Office doesn’t have the authority to extend the deadline, but said it will waive penalties for late payments if a taxpayer can document that the outbreak is hindering their ability to pay their property tax on time.

“Beginning April 11, we will make available online a penalty cancellation request form specifically related to the coronavirus,” Treasurer-Tax Collector Russell Watts said in a statement. “The penalty
cancellation process will require documentation about how the taxpayer was impacted by the virus from reduced hours, layoffs, business closure, hospitalization or other circumstances that prevented timely payment.”

Homeowners who are able to pay their property tax on time should do so online at taxcolp.cccounty.us/taxpaymentrev3/lookup, by calling (925) 957-5280 or by mail. Walk-in payments will not be accepted as the Treasurer-Tax Collector’s office is closed due to the Bay Area’s shelter-in-place order.

How about lowering our property taxes?

I am totally with you on that. Perhaps a little further for renters. Have landlord allow us to miss a rent payment or reduce the rent amount to half in return for landlords property tax be reduce.

I doubt it because California politicians are addicted to taxes like candy. They do not have to worry like us because we are supporting them and their pensions.

How would a self-employed individual prove that they have not worked? I stopped taking on new work couple of weeks before the widespread
shut down. How late can I pay without penalties?

Show them your unemployment checks.

When you are self-employed, you do not received unemployment checks. Why do you think William is asking this question?

I was waiting for someone like you to chime in erroneously like this.

With the new stimulus bill that the POTUS just signed, self-employed people do get unemployment checks, plus $600 extra per week.

“Unemployment Benefits
Who will be covered by the expanded program?

The plan wraps in far more workers than are usually eligible for unemployment benefits, including self-employed people and part-time workers.

The bottom line: Those who are unemployed, are partly unemployed or cannot work for a wide variety of coronavirus-related reasons will be more likely to receive benefits.”

They should be waiving the fee to pay online since you can’t go in person like many people like to do to get a printed receipt on the spot. It would cost me $80 in fees to pay online! It should cost no more than a $5 processing fee to make an online pmt! It is highway robbery. We can hardly pay the property taxes as high as they are already and then they want to add an additional $80?

They could find a more reasonable provider to process payments, they just don’t care!

You can pay online with no fee. Just use checking account info. The service fee is charged when using credit cards.

Concord Ygnacio: Why say “show them your unemployment checks.” Why not put the link in originally.
