Public Agencies, Nonprofits Issue Guidelines On Use Of Parks, Open Spaces

A coalition of nearly 50 public agencies, non-profit organizations and indigenous tribes released a set of guidelines Wednesday to protect public health and reduce crowds at public parks and open spaces.

The coalition, including the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department, the Bay Area Ridge Trail Council and the Federated Indians of Graton Rancheria, released the guidelines in response to recent reports of overwhelming crowds at public parks and open spaces.

The guidelines are intended to encourage Bay Area residents to help prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus, even if they are not in an enclosed space.

“Flattening the curve of contagion is our top priority — and everyone’s responsibility,” coalition Executive Director Annie Burke said. “We recognize the great need and desire for access to outdoor spaces during a period of sheltering at home. At the same time, if people don’t use the spaces safely, then the parks cannot remain open.”

The coalition advised residents to avoid holding social gatherings at public parks, going outside for health reasons rather than socializing, and staying at least 6 feet away from strangers. Residents are also advised to visit less frequented parks and open spaces and avoid areas with crowded parking lots and trails.

“We hope the public will embrace these guidelines so that we — and the parks we love — remain safe and protected,” Burke said.
