Currently, a person has to be at least 35 years old to run for President of the United States. However, there is no maximum age limit, meaning if a person is 100 years old, they can legally run for President.
QUESTION: Should there be a maximum age limit to run for President of the United States?

No change limit for ages needed, what we need is an intelligence test for voters.
100%. I think 70 should be tops. Dementia and alzheimer’s start kicking in around that age.

No, there shouldn’t be any age maximum. If a person is mentally and physically capable, he/she/they can be the president of the US. Furthermore, I agree with former ca gov Schwarzenegger that a US citizen who is not born in the US should be able to run for the presidency; The USA has been very progressive (I.e we let voting ballots/pamphlets , driving test, ect in many different languages and a black president ) so I guess it is time to amend the constitution to allow all US citizens to run for the presidency.
It’s a matter of trust,and someone could be trained for yeas in their anti America country,then brought to the USA,run for POTUS on a fake agenda,then become Obama x10 and make America into the country they just came from.
This would have already happened if they did what you want them to do.

Here on Claycord we sometimes see posts about missing people who have dementia and are only in their 60s. On the other hand, I have known people over 100 who are as sharp as a tack. So I don’t think age should be a criterion. It should be left to the voters to decide if a person is competent.

Age isn’t the issue. A better test is if they can pass a tough physical test one year before the election. Each candidate can volunteer to take the 3 week training at the United States Army Airborne School “Jump School”. If they can pass that training, then they are eligible to be on the ballot.
How about must release latest tax filings? How about all finances put into a trust during that period of time? How about not instigating insurrections? 😉

It’s a slippery slope that dem voters live on, first to cast a stone, morals and ethics obviously no longer play a part in politics, so why not vote for someone who has the country’s well being in mind. NO ONE is a saint, but at least HELP YOUR OWN country first. I’m sure the 40k keystone pipeline employees would like to take their votes back.
Anyone/everyone, running for office should be required to be extremely transparent to the people who will elect them; open the books, tax filings, medical records, and all possible conflicts of interest.

No, there are many people who are very sharp both mentally and physically well into old age. However, you have to be honest with yourself and those around that when you loose the ability to function and lead like biden, then it’s time to step aside. Former President Carter stated last year there was no way he could preform the duties of the President of the U.S. at 80 years of age. Say what you will about firmer President Carter, but that man often worked 16-18 hours a day. Joey might work 4 hours a day if that. He is an absent leader.
And how many hours a day did trump work? Scheming to overthrow an election and watching Sean Hannity does not count as Presidential work.

I know more than a few people over 70 who would argue with that age limitation.
No easy answer. We’ve all seen Biden struggle with his words, and make unintelligible, and confusing statements. We’ve also had older presidents like Eisenhower, who was in his 60’s when elected, and did a terrific job of creating the interstate highway system. He also created the health dept, and the dept of education, and kept our country out of a nuclear war.
Reagan was in his 70’s when he negotiated an agreement with the Soviet Union and helped put an end to the Cold War. He also kept inflation down as the economy grew.

Though I really dislike ageism having been hit with it in the tech field but with something like the Presidency I think is better to have someone a little younger who can represent the newer younger voters. Baby Boomers got this with Dan Quayle as VP (yuck) and then Bill Clinton (double yuck) and so on. The younger crowd seems to have a problem coming up with good candidates though. BTW, being President is more like a front man or salesman. The real deal goes on behind the scene.

Congress and President should be capped at one term with an extension of two years to the current term duration.
Given the improvements in medicine over the years and their effect on longevity, maybe 80 is a reasonable number from a cognitive point of view. However much past 80, associated physical frailties and stamina required for the job become questionable.
A successful cognitive test should be required to get on the ballot. In 2020 that would have saved everyone of lot of heartache (except Joe Biden). Further, an annual cognitive test should also be required.
A better idea is once a person is wearing diapers they can’t run..FOR ANY POLITICAL OFFICE.
I believe the upper age of any federal candidate or appointee should be 70 years old. While there are many more important factors to consider (e.g., integrity, competency, effectiveness, substantive plans, and communication) we are now faced with a congress, senate, president, justices, etc. that do not represent that average American ages. For example, Diane Feinstein is in her 90’s.
I also believe in term limits for federal candidates and appointees (e.g., Senate: 2 terms, Supreme Court: 20 years or 75 years of age whichever comes first, etc.). The numbers here are just initial thoughts and not firm ideas.
Most western democracies have much younger presidents, MP’s, Chancellors, etc. and I feel they are more in touch with their constituents and our evolving society.
I welcome constructive feedback to broaden my perspective and thinking.
The President is supposed to be an American Citizen by birth.

Its incorrect to state that one must be at least 35 years old to RUN for the presidency. The requirement is that to hold the office, one must be at least 35 years old; therefore, before being ELECTED, there is no age requirement.

It doesnt matter. Recent history shows our presidents are no longer elected. They are installed.
Age shouldn’t be a factor, but cognitive ability should be. A test should be administered at some point before voting begins and then let the people decide. If they decide to vote for someone with limited cognitive ability, so be it. Intellect is obviously not a factor in whether or not the candidate will be a good president either. For example, Jimmy Carter had a high IQ and was a disaster as President. Biden obviously is on the low end of IQ of all of our Presidents and has also been a disaster (even worse than Carter).
If the person running for president cannot name all the Baskin Robbins ice cream flavors, as Joe surely can do, then they shouldn’t run.
