Congratulations to the De La Salle rugby team on capturing both the Single School State Championship and the Single School Northern California Championship.
On Saturday, February 29, the Spartans defeated Southern California champion, Carlsbad High School, 21-19 at UCLA.
JJ Tofaeono punched one in with no time left to tie it up 19-19, then Mario Storti hit the kick to give the Spartans a two-point victory.
To get to the state championship game, De La Salle defeated 2019 National Champion, Jesuit High School in the Northern California Single School Championship game at Saint Mary’s College on February 22. The Spartan entered that game ranked No. 11 in the nation, and defeated the nation’s second ranked school by a score of 19-10, setting up a state championship match up against Carlsbad.
Following the Single School Championship, De La Salle will enter the Premier I Division and compete against some of the best high school clubs in the country.
The California Single School Championship was created by NorCal Rugby in 2019 to promote how far the level of high school rugby has come at the single school level. Most of the high school rugby teams in the United States are club teams. To be considered a single school, programs can only allow kids who attend your school to be on the team.
