My arborist says my palm tree will not blow down. It always worries me because it looks like it is trying to tie itself into a knot.

report of a 209 MPH gust up in the Sierras

My next door neighbor has one of those awful palm trees. 3/4 of it is dead fronds that blow all over our street and my yard during these winds. I will pick the ones that fall in my yard and put them in his driveway. I was told they don’t want those put in the green recycle bin.

If they can’t go in the green bin, then what are people supposed to do with them? I have an elderly neighbor that keeps getting them in her yard too, and it isn’t her tree!!

Republic won’t take them. I cut them up and put them in the trash cart. I kept a few for kindling this winter and they were very effective for that as long as they are thoroughly dried out.

Whenever the wind blows hard and the palm fronds come down I collect them, cut them into thirds and put them in the green container. Never had a problem with Republic. As far as a neighbor problem goes I don’t have one. I have to prune their trees that infringe on my property and clean their leaves that blow into my yard. It is just done and no one talks about it.

My literature from Republic says they don’t take palm fronds in the yard waste. My thought was that they have those very tough fine filaments (the stuff you can weave baskets out of it’s so strong) that likely jam any sort of equipment that might be used to shred them.

Tried to give them to the Oakland Zoo for the elephants, but they had a very sharp and dangerous spiked, needle-like thing and the zoo couldn’t take them. I had to cut them up with a chain saw they were so strong. They are just an annoyance as far as I’m concerned.

In the Sierra Nevada, a National Weather Service remote sensor located on a chairlift tower at 9,186 feet at the Kirkwood Ski resort recorded a gust of 209 mph at 7:45 a.m. … “Northeast winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 55 mph. Sierra ridge winds up to 150 mph or more.”2 hours ago

With winds like that, you can ski uphill – who needs a lift!

Our power flickered off then back on 4 times this AM. We’re near Cowell Park. I shut off all the sensitive electrics after the second flicker and just read a book. The howling wind was a bit unnerving, but kind of awesome.

We’ve been without power since noon yesterday. Still out. The only thing reliable about PGE is their billing service.

The wind irritates Everything!

Winds were clocked at 76 mph on top of Mount Diablo!

Crazy weather….It was perfect out Saturday!
Double Dang!

I also have had many neighbors in a HOA neighborhood-one house next to me that has 3 huge palm trees and a huge pine tree and the last 2 owners flat out refuse and ignore letters sent to them to trim their trees back. This morning I had over 30 huge palm branches in my back yard that broke plants, pots and yard decorations. The HOA was copied but no response. I am thinking of contacting my insurance company and asking them to contact the homeowner to advise them some action needs to be taken. I to brought over all of the palm branches for them to dispose of.

So windy at the Troll Palace that our gas BBQ wouldn’t stay lit, and we had to use the oven!

Wind gusts were an inconvenience yesterday but nothing compared to what other parts of the country have to go through during the winter.
73 degrees in SR!!
Complaining about living here? Enjoy the midwest right now, folks.
