The “Water Cooler” is a feature on Claycord.com where we ask you a question or provide a topic, and you talk about it.

The “Water Cooler” will be up Monday-Friday at noon.

Today’s question:

A proposed bill in California would allow a person to take up to three photos for their driver license picture. There would be a voluntary fee to take extra pictures, but the person would get to choose the best of the three to use on their license.

QUESTION: Is this something you’d like the option of having when taking a new picture for your license, or do you think lawmakers should work on more important things?

Talk about it….

Only in CA !

Face palm.

Joe

No. For some odd reason, my photos at the DMV turn out nicer than photography I’ve paid good money for. It’s embarrassing to have people point out how nice my DMV photo is.

No more than 2 of the pictures can be selfies

The latter

Lawmakers should work on more important things.

If someone wants extra pictures to chose from, thus making wait times last longer, the fee should be priced very high, in my opinion. 1st picture is complimentary and required, second picture is $100 fee, third picture is $250 fee. If you want a photo shoot, you pay for it!

Yep.

I’ve never seen more than two people in the line to have their picture taken, so I can’t imagine that it’s going to cause a backup out the door if it takes each customer one minute longer.

I had a license with a terrible picture for a long time until it expired. I had to take the written test again and they issued a new license, now I have one with a better picture.
Of course lawmakers should work on important matters, but having a choice of three pictures and making a donation seems like such a small matter. The important matters being made by a Democrat legislation are mostly for getting softer on crime and wasting taxpayer’s money on illegals, so this one is a nice break from the foolishness of the left.

Not to nitpick, but the bill is proposed by Assemblyman Phillip Chen, who is Republican

When a person starts out by saying, “not to nitpick,” you can bet they are going to nitpick. I know who Phillip Chen is, but thanks anyway.

No IT ISNT Republican Philip Chen’s Idea at all.
On Feb 16th Senator Josh Newman (DEMOCRAT) – Fullerton Ca,introduced senate bill 1407 “which gave Californians the chance to redo their hair, etc”
SOURCE- DMV.ORG.
Don’t tell me its not a reliable source ,they cite exactly who’s idea this is.
Not a word about any republican in their tell all news page about their own laws.
You cant challenge this lefties.
You are incorrect claycordian….

My driver license photo is so bad, I’ve become fond of it. I joke about it when I get the chance.

Depends on who is answering your question. I’m old enough to not care what the picture looks like since I seldom take a “good” one. I have friends who would love to be able to chose their picture even if it cost a bit more.

I agree with Dorothy, lol! But when I was in my teens and they made you retake pictures when you “lost” your license, we would pay the $10 to get a better picture.

Yes, I would have liked this option. Just had mine done in October, and could have been better. Looking like a deer caught in the head light is not my normal look.

It is when the cop walks up to your car window after being stopped for speeding, get it?You don’t look at your best when being stopped.

I had a small picture of Giselle Bunchen I taped over the cruddy one the DMV took. Fit perfectly. If anybody asks, I tell them I’m having a bad day.

No, that would be a DMV photo booth plus line will be even longer. No way. just get your picture taken and get out of there.

OMG, whats next. Maybe you should be allowed to Photoshop your picture.

We should honestly have the pictures neutral with no smile at all. I believe passports already have a no teeth showing rule. A neutral look helps with identifying someone.

If I could pick the rules this is what it would be: Eyes open, neutral facial expression, no hair covering the face, no hats or head coverings, facing forward and in a straight posture, no glasses, no jewelry or accessories, natural looking makeup, no uniform other than daily religious clothing,

I actually go out of my way to look as bad as possible in my DL photo. It gives people a laugh when I show it to them.

This is what the DMV is concerned with?
Pllleeaasseeee!

As long as I can wear my colander, I’m happy. Hail FSM

This is what our Republican Assemblymen are doing these days.

…….that’s still better than what the Dems are doing!

Only in CA and for the narcissist who also complains that they have no money.

The reason they take the photo the second look at the camera and aren’t really ready is that’s the same way you look when you just got stopped and the photo is for the police to properly identify you,not so you can look pretty in a photo of yourself you carry around. Now Ca is going to try to take advantage of there poor photography and people being vain? Its all cash or check at DMV still isn’t it?Usually they want you to waste money in a way you wont notice-with your credit card.Kids, this will cost you more cash you just don’t have.

Oh you guys are so negative! It is brilliant. I love my pretty face and want
the best picture possible.

I once got a letter from the DMV asking me to return for a photo retake.
My photo apparently wasn’t up to standards.
Guess I’ll need four

Got My very best DMV photo in Pittsburg last year when the photographer said “Smile” and waved a squeky stuffed toy in the air.

How sweet! Some people are just good at what they do like that. They got a natural smile from you and what a neat way to do it.

two photos to choose from at no charge…..

Just another way for the CA .gov to make money of it’s citizens.

Since I am continually having to show my Driver’s License for identification, I would like one that didn’t make me look like I just got released from overnight at County Jail. So, yes, I think this is a good idea. For some reason, DMV can’t take a decent photo of me. I know it’s hard, but some people can do it — at least better than the recent ones I have had taken.

You and me both.

This bill would stop DMV employees from ruining people’s photos on purpose. When I updated my license, the person operating the camera was clearly intent on getting a bad photo. There was an unnecessary amount of time from when he said look at the camera to the time the camera actually went off. I’ve never had a bad photo before until this recent one, because I’ve never had to stand still for so long waiting for a photo to happen. Some DMV employees really do like to take their frustrations out on the people waiting for services.

…….that’s still better than what the Dems are doing!

These are digital pictures that don’t cost money, it’s not like we have to pay for processing. Just include an extra $10 in the license fee and automatically take 3 pictures and let the customer choose. Btw, when I got my Real ID I was told to take my glasses off for the picture even though I wear them all waking minutes. Has that happened to anyone else? On the other hand it was a great hair day for me and it’s the best pic DMV has ever taken!

The Claycord article should have included more detail. It’s California AB-2045 Driver’s licenses: photographs.(2019-2020)

I was not aware that the picture taking process at the DMV was something the state legislature needs to fix. The current system seems to be based on attitude. If you show up with a good attitude the picture taker is likely to show you the result and ask if you want to try another. There’s no charge.

My concern is that it forces the DMV to spend time and money implementing this system. Forms and procedures need to be developed and tested. The audit trail for the money collected needs to be developed and tested. It appears from the way the AB2045 is worded that the camera setups in the field offices will need to be upgraded to have the ability to retain three images and to have the patron pick and choose which one they want. I suspect the DMV has higher priority projects on their plate.

The 2018 version of this bill passed the senate and died, without a vote, in the assembly.

The last time they took my photo,I asked the guy if I could see it,I told him I don’t like that photo and could we do it over again,he said yes, cost $0.In Walnut Creek.

I want my photo placed upside-down, and all my personal info printed backwards. Yes, I’d pay extra for the option!

Yes, they should be working on more important issues.
Yes, they should allow you to choose from 3 photos.
I know from experience that some agents will intentionally wait for you to make a less that great face before taking the picture. This is what makes the picture taking process take longer than usual.

Knowing this information, I warned my daughter to make a pleasant face and not to change it until after they took the picture. I guess she got impatient and was going to ask why it was taking so long, that’s when she he agent decided to finally take the picture. I tried to warn her…

An additional idea, two pictures on the license. For men, one with a beard and one without.

I agree with you that men’s beards can render the use of facial photography for identification purposes ineffectual. But what are ya gonna do? If someone has a beard, that’s what they look like – until they don’t. But what about WOMEN?! As a man, I’m PRETTY sure there’d be some push back if I tried to stand for an ID photo while I wore a wig, changed the contours of my lips, camouflaged the actual appearance of my eyes with mascara and colored contacts, used paint to create false cheek bones, and made wildly inaccurate statements regarding my height and weight. Women routinely pose for ID photos after having taken steps to deceive the world, and DMV cameras, about their true appearance.

Your anecdote about your daughter rings true. I disregard the instruction to “smile”. The sad truth is, most people are bad photographers. No way I’m opening my mouth to smile just so they can perfectly capture that fleeting moment when I look simultaneously drunk, insane, and startled.

Waiting for someone to grow a beard is really going to slow the line down.

picture 1 on front of face

picture 2 on back of right profile

picture 3 on back of left profile

no choice. no charge

The whole idea is silly. Who cares about a photo that is seldom seen by anybody, especially anybody who might care.

The problem is most of these people don’t have any money,so they live on their credit cards as a cash substiute that youre never supposed to do btw,,and they have to show their ID several times a day for all those trivial waste of money purchases, ice coffee, cigarettes, lotto tickets, etc, all the stuff they spend hundreds per month on just to spend spend spend, they would never waste good cash in such a way,and this is the whole motive behind America having everyone living on credit. You overspend and dont notice and don’t care. But you have to show your photo alot.(I can hear the card people grumbling)
