Proposed Bill Would Give Schools Lost Revenue During Wildfire Power Shutoffs

State Sen. Bill Dodd introduced legislation Thursday that would reimburse schools for revenue lost during wildfire-related power shutoffs.

“My bill will ensure school districts are made financially whole while providing a mechanism to offer makeup days for students who have missed classroom time,” Dodd said.

The state’s school funding is based on the average daily student attendance. Under the current law, schools forced to close because of a public safety power shutoff could lose part of their expected funding allocation.

Senate Bill 884, co-authored by state Sen. Mike McGuire authorizes the state to backfill the average daily attendance money. The bill also authorizes school districts to receive money for makeup days offered at the end of the school year if the power shutoffs or other disasters force significant closures during the year.

Lol, apparently everyone Forgot about the Solar panels that our tax dollars paid for at these schools!?!?

If those panels are not able to provide power during an outage then the School district purchased from the Wrong solar companies.

Can you share the information that shows that the solar panels are designed to provide 100% of the power needs and each school as the storage capacity for whatever time frame you believe is needed?

A simple “google” search would give you the answer. In 2010 MDUSD partnered with SUNPOWER using Measure C fund, State Rebates and Federal government’s Clean Renewable Energy Bonds (CREBs) to make the solar project even more financially attractive. The installed solar at 51 MDUSD sites to produce 12.1 MegaWatts of Solar Energy. The first year it provided 92% of MDUSD energy needs.

The article didn’t say if all 51 sites were complete in first year.

Agree with Anon! So Newsom what say you? Oh that is right you are to busy squandering our surplus on other non sense issues.

Yeah. He and Libby need more $$ money to cover the “Sanctuary City” status. Illegals will require lots and lots of contributions from the taxpayers. Virtue signaling from our pompous politicians is very expensive… Don’t question them! Just go back to work so they can take their cut.

Did ANY MDUSD schools close during PG&E’s PSP shutdowns? It’s my recollection that overwhelmingly most if not all stayed open.

The school my spouse teaches at had no power for a number of days. No A/C, no technology(they don’t even take daily attendance on paper anymore, folks). They trucked in hot lunches as the lunchroom kitchens had no power.

I WISH they had closed, and got a reimbursement.
