The Claycord Online Museum – The Terminal Shopping Center In 1974

This is an old advertisement for the Terminal Shopping Center on Clayton Road in Concord, across the street from Concord BART.

This ad was featured in the official program for the 1974 Concord Summer Jazz Festival.

The big ad is obviously for “Richard’s Family Restaurant & Cocktail Lounge”, but if you look on the left, you can see all the businesses in the center in 1974.

Thanks for the memories Claycord!
I had not thought about that restaurant in years. Would sometimes go there and I just remembered the dark ambiance and the big booths that you sat in. Kind of enjoyable.
Yes that used to be a decent shopping center. Hard to imagine now. Now that Alpine bakery has left it I stay away from it completely. Every time I’ve been there some freaked out bum ranting and raving and yelling at people. It’s really a scary place now.
It used to be totally decent and nice.

Strange how our experiences can be so different. Of all the times I’ve visited that center, for CVS or Big5, or Pancho’s, I’ve never had anyone say boo to me. Yes, I’ve seen some who may be down on their luck, but no one has ever threatened me, or appeared threatening. Just as with BART, I wonder if some folks let their imagine run away with them. How many of the posters who criticize BART, who refer to all the homeless riding the trains, who talk about the filth on the trains, how many of those have actually ridden BART recently? Around noonish, 3 weeks ago, I rode from Concord to El Cerrito and back; the trains were clean, the people were orderly, nothing out of the ordinary, none appeared homeless. I sometimes feel there’s a disconnect between perception and reality.

Now see here Badge!
That might very well have been me you saw.
I’ve been trying for some time now to establish that broken down little shopping center as Concord’s “Speaker’s Corner” like they have in Hyde Park in London, England.
Next time, step up and shout out whatever’s on your mind!
You’ll feel better for it…. harrumph!

I remember Pets Plus – a great pet-shop!

Don Ellis and Chuck Mangione’s bands were the headliners at the Jazz Festival in the park, the night I went in 1974.

The big corner vacancy that used to be World Savings has been vacant for how many years; 15-20?

Remember the Terminal Liquor Store? They sold Terminal Vodka! So funny.

I remember Long’s Drugs, Golden West Savings, Davi Jeweler, One Hour Martinizing, Tandy Leathers, and Robert W. Disney DVM, but I don’t remember Richard’s.

Wasn’t there a Country Western dance/bar joint at the Eastern end of the Center?

Richard’s cocktail lounge was a step above the Starlite Room, I remember someone got stabbed and died during a brawl about the time of this ad. I preferred the Starlite but the food at Richards was pretty good after bar hopping all night. It drew in a wide variety of people.

Big 5 and Lugi’s

The Starlite was the only bar in town that I could drink at when I was 18 years old. In junior high we use to go to Richard’s for french fries. I also worked at Longs Drugs before Bart was across the street. When I was 4 years old my parents had an engraved dog tag made for me at that Longs, name address etc. because I liked to wander off. The Pet store was great. I still miss the Pet Store. Oh memory’s.

Louis Market and Long’s Drugs. Everything you’d ever need right there.

MMMMmmm finger licking good, a menu to die for, lol lol get it, Terminal, its like god gave you the last opportunity to shop till you drop pun intended..
I had to type that because I LOVE O’L georgio carlin
