The “Water Cooler” is a feature on Claycord.com where we ask you a question or provide a topic, and you talk about it!
The “Water Cooler” will be up Monday-Friday at noon!
Several stores announced they plan to start their holiday sales as early as 4 p.m. on Thanksgiving. Do you think this will cause trouble with families, since many people will choose shopping over spending time with relatives?
Talk about it….
Since many people are law happy, they should pass a law making it illegal to open before 12:01am Friday after Thanksgiving.
“They” should pass a law. And just who might “they” be?
I don’t care about families that have a problem with a relative preferring to shop rather than spending time with the family. What does concern me though, is the fact that certain retailers are open during Thanksgiving, forcing their employees to work when they would rather be with their family. Making matters worse is the stores that are starting their sales at 4 pm which is the time a lot of Thanksgiving dinners are getting underway..
Happy Thanksgiving everybody!
I work at Macy’s and has for several years. Some years back they started by opening I think late night 10 p.m. or 11 p.m. don’t remember, after that is went to 7 p.m. and now it is 4 or 4:30 p.m. However I have never had to work on Thanksgiving, they ask for volunteers, and if they don’t get enough they do schedule employee’s to make sure they have enough staff. Seems like most of the time they get enough volunteers, often young people with no family close by. Also Thanksgiving is a paid Holiday for us workers, so if you work on Thanksgiving you get regular 8 hours pay, plus you get time and a half the hours you work, AND if you work Thanksgiving you don’t have to work on black Friday, so some employees choose that option, the extra pay is a big incentive to many. If I needed the money badly I might choose that. As for being a shopper I would never shop on Thanksgiving, other than for food) nor would I ever get up at an ungodly hour to get some early bird deal on black Friday. I like to shop, but there is nothing I need so badly that I would interrupt my thanksgiving or sleep for. The past thanksgiving I worked at Macy’s at the Stanford Mall Palo Alto, and from what I heard from my co workers, many shoppers was from countries or cultures that does not celebrate thanksgiving. I recently transferred to a Macy’s in this area, so not sure of the shopping habit of our customers.
Some people prefer to work on holidays, so they have an excuse not to have to be with family.
Why do you think Friendsgiving was started?
In the words of Jimmy Carter, “You can’t choose your kin.”
Do you think this will cause trouble with families, since many people will choose shopping over spending time with relatives?
wow is this really being discussed
so the yayhoos are trying to out businesses for trying to make a buck
as the above said there are incentives
and the ones who have to work are mostly management as it should be they are salary
wow so whats next the easter bunny color is racist
or bias or abstract to muslims
you sure have a lot of time to complain and point the finger of
distain against the past while you radicalize the future and repeat it
common sense is not common as these things point out very often
its simple mind your own business
if you have to work and dont want to or are up inarms then find another job …instead of blaming someone trying to better their life. and paying you a bonus
get over yourself there are billions on this planet and your pissy attitude is not even a concern to over 3/4 of the world ….
find another job or go to school and hey open your own business and see how you would manage your employees ….
until your on the hook for 3-5-50-200 employees and paying their benefits and HR person and lawyers and gov fees and taxes and obviously unsubstantiated complaints…. move on find work elsewhere instead of being a log in the middle of the road complaining that no one will stop and move you …wow

Random Task,
As for your statement that it is mostly management, that does not hold true for retail, at Macy’s on busy days we have maybe 5-6 managers, but lot’s more employee’s, depending on the size of the store, I would like to see the lines if mostly management was working on busy days! As for just find another job, it is not that simple for some of us, I around retirement age, I think I would have trouble getting hired somewhere else, but Macy’s will never fire me as long as I show up and do my job, also because I have been there for a number of years, I would not get hired at another retail store at the same salary. Some of my co workers have been with Macy’s since the paid commission, when Macy’s stopped paying commission they bought there contract out, so my guess is they make $25.00 to 30.00 an hour, they would not be able to find another retail job at that pay. You seem very quick to jump on people without considering all the ramifications.
I say life is short. If someone would really rather go shopping than spend time with family all day on Thanksgiving then who cares. We do not know what their specific situation is (and it is really none of our business anyhow). It is just unfair to judge people. In all of the years I’ve been alive it seems like things have become more negative and I hope we can change that. Be kind to one another. Try to stop judging everyone and make them feel bad for not celebrating something the exact way you do. To me that is the real spirit of the Holidays.
Wishing everyone a safe, Happy Holiday no matter how you personally chose to spend it.
Good News for shoppers you can save money 100% by staying at home on Black Friday and the same on Thanksgiving day. Not worth shopping in your Pajamas
Your best vote that counts is your dollar. Don’t want stores open on holidays? Don’t shop. It may not affect you today, but someday you may have kids or grandkids, and they won’t be able to join the family because they have to flip burgers or sell shoes. To each their own.
I think all stores should be closed on all major holidays!
Thanksgiving should be about spending time with family and friends not thinking about shopping and money on Thanksgiving Day
To each his own. Shopping May be a great excuse to deal with family. Not all families have a Norman Rockwell Thanksgiving. Or they may want the overtime to work on holidays.
Any child that doesn’t put their hopes and dreams aside so their mothers can rush them through dinner and zoom off to the mall = selfish rugrat
I have no problem with stores being open on the holiday. A friend of mine doesn’t have family in the area, and prefers to work and go out to eat on this day. Not everyone celebrates the holiday. To each their own…
