The blue light special has burned out.
Kmart, located on Clayton Rd. in Concord inside the Vineyard Shopping Center, will close by February of 2020, according to Sears Holdings.
The company is closing 96 Sears and Kmart stores throughout the nation.
Going out of business sales at these stores are expected to begin on Dec.2.

Finally. Can’t believe it’s taken this long.
That’s a big lot to build a high density unit or single-family homes. Right on the bus line. Any idea who owns the lot? This could be an opportunity to change the neighborhood.
I doubt it will be demolished. The store is part of the strip mall, and as far as we know, the other stores aren’t closing.
More likely it will stay retail space,…but it will be interesting to see what moves in and how soon.
Affordable housing / section 8 would definitely add to the neighborhood.
Who said anything about section 8? I’m talking development like contra costa center with retail shops on the bottom.
I think we need to keep commercial property as is. Being my family lives within a mile that center. Clayton rd. DOES NOT need more low income housing we have to much already. Keep your socialist bs out of Concord.
Good News! Can’t wait to see what will replace it. Hopefully Trader Joes, Target or Sprouts.
Love your recommendations.
The existing space is probably too small for a modern Target store. Too little parking also.
Well heck. My mom loves shopping there.
There will be those that will miss them. I will not be one of them.
I was in there a few days ago and noticed nothing is being restocked and I said out loud”looks like this is the next store to go out of business”.And ridiculously they put their expenses up over the last year by having a doorman check your receipt just like Walmart. That place is bleeding money
It’s about time. Would love Target here instead!
Sears/Kmart is just a private equity scam milking as much money for the owners as it can. Customers, employees mean nothing to them.
You can bet that Eddie Lampert will make money.
Exactly. Sears/Kmart was doing fine until private equity got involved then they loaded up debt, raked in the money for themselves, ran the company into the ground and thousands of employees, in the end, lost their jobs.
Really Sad. Employees is what built this nation.
Another empty building at this end of Concord. With Orchard Supply Hardware empty up the street, Beverley’s Fabrics and Crafts (now a full inventoried Salvation Army Store) that never opened and Monument Car Parts that closed years ago on Clayton Road (still empty). Can you name more stores?
I wonder why that fully stocked Salvation Army hasn’t opened?
Next door to Monument Car Parts there was a Marshall Steele dry cleaners that remained empty.
Hopefully it will become a Target!!! Or even Trader Joes!
I really want it to a Walmart super center. It would be great not having to drive to Martinez or Pittsburgh. To get the stuff I want from walmart
You mean in Antioch…
There is one in Antioch and one in Pittsburg. There not a super centers the closest super center is in Redwood City
Hard pass on that garbage.
@Melissa
There is a supercenter in Fairfield.
Walmart would be great!!! Better quality and prices than Target.
There is a Supercenter in Antioch on Lone Tree Way.
No matter what the public wants the city council will put what they want.
Exactly what businesses does the City Council own that they can put there?
Whoever greases their palm(s) enough.
You know whatever goes in there will pay some nice bribes and/or kickbacks to the council. Walmart won’t even deal with them after the fiasco with the other half of the property where Lowes is.
Count on it being empty for years.
Good, put in a WinCo.
Great idea bringing Winco to Concord. They provide a terrific variety of products at affordable prices. Would definitely crush it in that location and will add a much better alternative to Foodmaxx, Luckys and Safeway.
Fingers crossed for a Target!! The Walnut Creek and Pleasant Hill locations aren’t convenient. If a Target is put in, it will be a gold mine!!
Remember when Kmart sold guns and ammo? And black powder? And hot dogs?
Oh,…and their little deli area! My dad use to buy 3 lbs. of sliced ham for the week at a great price. Feeding a Family of 7 on one salary was a challenge.
I remember those days. My parents would buy us all a Sub sandwich when we went. It was a weekly treat.
I’m sorry for the employees and those that shop there. However I hope that a decent business takes over the location. Target would be great.
I will actually miss that store. Up until recently it was well stocked with a wide variety of items, and the workers were friendly. I haven’t shopped in Target for years and have no plans to. We’ll see what goes in and how long it sits vacant. OSH is still empty.
See you all hating but don’t side with you, I have fond memories of riding down on my bike as a kid(51 now). Would rather have Kmart over Target any day and all day all year. Could care less for Sprouts or Trader Joes or any kind of business like that.
Just a hunch nothing more but it won’t be a grocery store of some sort-Save Mart (Luckys) wouldn’t be too happy to see that in their shared shopping center space . Target would make the most sense as long as their daily traffic would make sense (and the parking), They’d probably totally redo and expand the store to meet their needs. The other large retailer lurking out there is the company behind “Outdoor Supply Hardware” (OSH 2.0) they have opened in Napa and their Moraga store is opening soon. Target would make the most sense…based on the fact there’s no similar mass market retailer on the Clayton Valley area but they’d want some sort of tax breaks I am sure from the city. And if it were to happen you’d see quite the celebration at Concord City Hall…..
It really doesn’t matter who you want to move into that spot, if that retailer isn’t interested. If you want a Target, Trader Joe’s, or even a Walmart, take the time to send them an email and tell them what you think.
Walmart coming in would decrease our home prices. It’s been proven in studies of areas neighboring Walmarts. Please let a nice store liven up the area!
I would prefer not a walmart, but if lowers our ridiculous housing costs, maybe worth it!
You mean I’d be able to BUY a home where I live and work instead of renting?! Bring on the Walmart!
When the owners raised the rent on the Monument cars parts location on Clayton rd 9 years ago, they scared away all renters. It has terrible exposure too.The building faces backwards and nobody knows the businesses are there. If the owners were smart they would tear down the building and build it facing the street.
Sad news. It is convenient for so many things.
The last straw for me was going in to buy gift wrapping paper and ribbon for a birthday present and they’d stopped carrying wrapping supplies. Only the promise of seasonal Christmas wrapping at that time of year I was told. Trouble is that as long as I live I’ll never run out of Christmas wrapping. I need birthday, sympathy, wedding, baby shower, etc., etc., etc. wrapping paper and ribbon. I’m really tired of Target too.
If I’m not mistaken, I beleive SAVEMART/LUCKY(Peccinino) bought the shopping center when they rebuilt Lucky.
I’m with you and your daughter. I will miss Kmart , can’t stand shopping at Target. We definitely don’t have a say what goes in as the city council will do what they want.
KMART’s the only place to pay your P.G. & E. bill in person. They don’t allow you to pay at the Detroit P. G. & E. anymore.
Since when?I’ve gone there every month for 20 years. If you go there at 4:59 they will lock you out.
Establishing a WALMART would cater and bring an undesirable element into our area.
What will happen to McCAULOUS if TARGET opens up??
LUCKY ‘s is fine as it is!
eliminating their Submarine Sandwich; The Beginning of the End!
Kmart has a submarine sandwich??
“Had”
are you pointing out I’m old… 😁
Fry’s is next. Barren in there – no customers; no goods.
If you have been in the store lately you knew it was on life support. Sad because this was so convenient, I could get to it without driving through downtown Concord or downtown PH. Be interesting to see what goes in. Not holding my breath for anything good.
Just talked to one of the tenants in the shopping center and they said the owner of the shopping center is selling the shopping center.
Loved that Store! The cafeteria was awesome ans cheap and they had a craft department that had everything I needed. It’s a shame it is closing.
They all want to leave California. Retail is the next ghost towns. bad marketing, theft, and politics. online sales rule now. Home Depot would be good though.
Winco!!!
With cost of existing in this state so high and disposable income continuing to shrink is not surprising, number of businesses closing.
When out driving make it a point to observe number of empty retail spaces there are. Seems to increase each year.
Would be nice to see a Target go in there.
I suppose Target would make sense in that location. Or maybe a Lowe’s (though OSH location would be better, but obviously didn’t happen…didnt Lowe’s buy OSH anyeay? Trader Joe’s would have been a better fit where Grocery Outlet went in after Fresh and Easy closed.
Fresh and Easy was owned by the other half of the company that owns Trader Joes. It would have been a hard sell to put the rival store into a location they had just vacated due to lack of traffic
The second Kmart commercial on the compilation has “Rizzo”from M*A*S*H.
As much as I hate to see K Mart go, it was just a matter of time. Same thing will occur with Sears at the Sun Valley Mall by some point. The whole chain is being mismanaged and run into the ground.
As far as Target moving there, I’m not sure it’s a big enough space for one of their stores. Target is going through a remodel phase, and they’re trying to integrate bigger groceries stores within their stores, which brings another problem. Does that center have a non compete clause for other grocery stores? They’ve turned away some business because of contracts with other tenants.
Whatever ends up there, I hope it’s something we can use.
Salty here..
100% in agreement with EMPTY. Great management by our Concord City council folks to allow all these businesses to either fail or walk away.
DR. Jellyfinger what are your thoughts..
Salty Out!!
What else are they going to do? They don’t have any way to bail them out and they seem, in fact, to be working to discourage business in the area, specifically with their sales tax increases. This has been going on for twenty years. Eventually, they will legitimately qualify for all those redevelopment funds they took and squandered, and the whole city can be “gentrified.”
Time for another Duller Store.
The building would make a Duller SUPER store.
Just sad to see retail stores become what they are today. In their hayday, shopping at brick and mortar was a pleasure, sort of a social occasion.
The next occupant will be a retail establishment that is already doing well . And we can count those stores on one hand. A grocery store, car parts, or liquor, items not easily shipped through the mail. Or discount clothing like Marshalls.
☹️
NOOOOOOO! It’s the only store of it’s kind at this end of town!!!
Concord had best get Target in there ASAP.
NO WALMART!!!
Primarily the reason it does so well in Walnut Creek is that Target is grossly overpriced.
I’ve been really hoping Target would take over the Osh location on YV, but this location would be great too.
This space should be turned into a homeless shelter (temporary or permanent is fine) with beds, a cafeteria, and rec rooms. There are too many people being forced to live on the streets these days, and winter will be here soon! Be kind in your heart.
The end of that shopping center-how absurd.
With Lucky already in that shopping center, I can’t imagine that anyone would even try to put a different grocery store there.
It was becoming pretty obvious about a year ago that this location was on borrowed time. Store personnel claimed that store was not closing even though the shelves were getting emptier and emptier. I don’t think corporate told employees until the last minute.
How about Concord PD moves in with a satellite office. They could be real close to all the crap that goes on up and down Clayton Rd. They could be right in the backyard of all the drug deals and prostitutes that are in some of the hotels near by. They could move half their patrol fleet up there and it would give the community a sense of security knowing the police were closer by.
Otherwise if you’re going to stick to retail a Target or Sprouts would be good. The area also needs a Chick Filet somewhere close but that building doesn’t work for that.
Indoor Gun/Shooting club with a nice restaurant & bar.
Perfect place for a new Trader Joe’s!!
Lucky’s doesn’t think so, and they have the deciding vote.
How about a Dee dees to go with the Popeyes
Sorry to see it go because it’s been there so long. I used to walk through the field before it was built to go to CVHS.
