A large Halloween party at an Airbnb rental in Orinda, where four people were fatally shot, was not authorized, Airbnb representatives said Friday.
“We are horrified by this tragedy and are in close communication with Chief David Cook of Orinda Police to offer our support with his investigation into who committed this senseless violence,” the company said in a statement.
The guest who booked the home in the 100 block of Lucille Way would be banned from Airbnb and the house would be removed from the company’s platform during the investigation, Airbnb said.
The house rules for the short-term rental specifically banned parties.
“Our thoughts are with the loved ones of the victims of this abhorrent act as well as the neighbors of the home,” Airbnb said.
More than 100 people were at the party Thursday night when the shooting occurred about 10:50 p.m., according to the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office.
Three victims were pronounced dead at the scene and a fourth died later at a hospital.
Several other people were injured and some were taken to hospitals by ambulance. The exact number is not known, however, since some victims found other transportation to the hospital, sheriff’s spokesman Jimmy Lee said.
No information about suspects or arrests has been released.
Anyone with information on this case is asked to contact the Orinda Police Department or Office of the Sheriff at (925) 646-2441.
The Investigation Division can be reached at (925) 313-2600. For any tips, email: tips@so.cccounty.us or call (866) 846-3592 to leave an anonymous voice message.
Is it not unreasonable to expect that the owner or someone designated by the owner keeps an eye on their AirBnB rental? I’m sure it was obvious there was a large party – banned by the rules – going on in an otherwise empty house before the shootings took place.
The whole point to airbnb’s is so that you have like a vacation rental that you rent out your not just renting a room in your own home all the time. Sometimes this is some one second home or third home or they have lots of these. They might not even live in the same state
I wonder where the owner lives.
There’s a rumor that its Steph Curry’s house.
Steph Curry lives in Alamo
Steph moved to the Peninsula
Come On!!!! Steph’s last house was massive which is why he sold it.
Been there and not here to put anyone’s address out there, even if u wanted to you can probably find it. Leave Steph and Family Alone.
What does it matter where the owner lives or who the owner was. They didn’t do anything wrong. The renter mislead them.
I read the owner was notified by a neighbor about the noise and called the renter who said there were only 12 people in the home. The owner looked at the ring and saw more than 12. Crazy how this can happen in any neighborhood.
Well when they’re not rampaging at BART stations and on the trains, going on mass shoplifting sprees at Apple stores and Dick’s Sporting Goods, assaulting/robbing shoppers at Sun Valley, or looting because evil white cops and Orange Man Bad, throwing parties so they can drink, smoke weed, disturb peaceful neighborhoods, and trash a house that ain’t theirs is how this lovely culture likes to relax and unwind after a hard week of keeping it real.
It really is a cultural thing, isn’t it? Some folks try so hard to earn their stereotypes. The online invitation really spells it out.
Hopefully the attendees that were wannabes no longer want anything to do with a culture where people get shot in inordinate numbers. Hopefully there are a lot of parents who will convince their kids to re-evaluate their direction. Let’s hope…….
The violence is common in areas where people party, and clearly these people were not residents of Orinda. I am sorry that happened, but if you advertise on social media to party at a house, that attracts strangers. There better be new regulations for these rental homes. This was bound to happen. I am not surprised in the least. Sorry for the people that were killed and injured and especially their loved ones. They advertised to BYOB and other stuff on Instagram. Pretty much like asking for trouble.
We need some laws about posting BYOB at AirBNBs on Instagram. Mark D, get on it and save us!!!
Spot on Pete… there will be a tipping point. My advice be prepared for whatever. I’ll tell you one thing though it’s funny there are no gun grabber comments coming from the usual suspects on the left I wonder why that is ?
This doesn’t fit the gun grabber’s agenda.this would be admitting a problem that some people don’t want to know, because they already know and just hate being reminded..
OhOh…. What are we gonna ban now? Halloween or Airbnb??
And hell yes kids need to go to school the day after trick’n…. Lame question.
Pete V- right on.
I am guessing no one saw the flyer that had been on twitter before twitter removed it this morning. ..byob byow ….what ever….they were not residents of the area, rented the mansion for a hip hop mansion party and told the bnb owner it was a party of 12 for a family reunion. When you get a chance to , see the pics of the flyer. The hosts were mentioned on the flyer but their twitter accts. were taken down. These were not Orinda folks.
BYOB – bring your own bullets?
BYOW – bring your own weapon?
Owners might live offshore.
Lots of comments that these renters weren’t from Orinda – why ? . These renters had the money to rent this mansion, which probably wasn’t cheap .
Lives were lost . That’s the point
My guess is guests were charged. The point is a section of society is out of control. A hundred guests and no witnesses tells you something.
It is, indeed, unreasonable to expect such, as noted by Patty.
A hundred people at the party and the police are asking for witnesses to call in. This is just not acceptable. Were there no witnesses at the party? I also believe that the people who rented the house should be jailed. If at the very least for fraud. The owner should be fined for poor judgement. I can only imagine the damage done to the house. Don’t know the background of the dead and wounded I hope they were not good people. Good chance they were fellow gangbangers.
Probably fraud. I would bet that the “guest” renter probably stole the credit card that the reservation was paid with.

I have a friend who manages a few houses for a woman who purchased the homes specifically to rent them for short term through Airbnb. She lives in Australia, and she makes good money on them. But the stories I hear from my friend who deals with the aftermath.😳😱 Apparently renting an Airbnb for a party that you wouldn’t want to have in your own home is a popular thing now
Air BnB has some major horror stories they like to keep hidden.
Renters being held and raped, a cou0le attacked while they slept, two women used the rental as a brothel, another guy rented the house and then advertised and charge for a New Years Eve bash, a corpse found in the garden, (old lady who rented the place died while gardening) and heres one for California naturally…..after renter an air bnb for 30mdays she refused to leave per California Squatter laws. It took a lawyer $$$ to get her out.
When AirBnB started, the concept was to have guests stay at one’s primary residence. The concept wasn”t to buy a 2nd or 3rd home, and operate them as hotels. A normal Bed and Breakfast has the establishment operators living on site. A normal hotel has management on site. The AirBnB concept was to have people rent out a spare bedroom or a fold-out couch or something.
However, the company, and the users of the service, expanded the concept. Now we have people buying up properties to run hotels out of them, without any staff or safety. Aside from the safety issues, AirBnB is adding to the housing crisis. The home in Orinda could have been purchased by a family, but instead was purchased by someone who want to own a hotel without any regulation or responsibility. These type of people are driving up housing prices.
The renters pay the mortgage for him.Wealthy people are notoriously cheap, they will tell you that’s how they got wealthy

yup…they can’t hide this one, and when we start hearing the “saw nothin” you know this is NOT suburban youth bored in Orinda….that and the CVS being hit today, perps running for the bart station, in Orinda and the Home invasion/ car stolen in Lafayette…..btw..they found the car today……..In Oakland. Some things they are not going to be able to hide. That and the famous flyer that went around “inviting” the guests.
Regardless of the MAC-10 machine gun shooting…
With over 100 people in a house smoking blunts, cigarettes & drinking alcohol, what condition do you think these upstanding, civilized people left the house in?
No deposit will cover these damages.
I totally get the concept – buy a house, rent it out as an AirBnb , make money -sell when the market’s up. There has to be a property manager involved however, yep – there go the profits. Whoever insures this home probably doesn’t have a clue. This could happen anywhere. A reward will lead to the shooter.
They say the party was not allowed and yet it happened. This speaks volumes for the oversight by Airbnb and by the home owners (who should also be held accountable). The Orinda PD also shares some blame for not responding when alerted.
Preposterous,eh ,what?Pip pip,tally hoe….
I typed up a comment and then after reading it, I erased it because it sounded racist…. I did it 4 times…. and now I’m giving up.
It is pretty serious that 5 died…. I get that and it should be condemned… but every comment I make just seems tainted because everyone involved is black and any honest criticism I make is going to be regarded as racist no matter what I say.
It’s like having Obama as President again.
Sometimes “No Comment” is the comment.
pete v’s panties seem to be bunched up lol.
