Contra Costa County Veterans Invited To Have Key Docs Recorded, Stored For Free

Contra Costa County is hosting a free event in November to show veterans and their families how to “disaster-proof” honorable discharge documents and other important paperwork that can be a lifeline for preserving benefits, medical insurance and compensation.

The Contra Costa County Clerk-Recorder-Elections Department is hosting its third annual “Operation Documentation” veterans assistance event on Nov. 13 from 8 a.m. until noon at its office at 555 Escobar St. in Martinez.

The office offers veterans a place to record and safely store their DD-214 documents — the certificate of release or discharge from active military duty — free of charge.

The session also will offer a comprehensive overview of the Veterans Affairs benefits they may be eligible to receive, and to sign up for a veteran’s distinction on their state driver’s licenses (those who served in the Reserves and in the National Guard are now eligible for this).

Representatives from other county departments will also be on hand to describe tax breaks, job opportunities and other perks for which veterans might be eligible.

YES…Thank you all for your service.

As a Reserve with an Honorable Discharge – this is great. We were denied for years….no reason was given. I even contacted the office of the Assembly person who wrote the original bill – but they could not give a good reason.

Wildly and insanely too late!

Done long ago.

Because we know that they are not safe in the hands of the government! My father’s service records were burned in the fire in 1973 in Overland, KS. Fortunately he had his own copies.

Scan, upload to cloud drive, DONE.

DD214 should already be one of your important docs you scan and load onto USB “disaster drives” that are stored with your emergency kit AND in your “go bag”, PLUS uploaded to the cloud …a listing of accounts, passwords, scans of vehicle titles, birth & marriage certs, health records, etc. should all be on there.

The one document you need as a vet is a DD-214, (It is maybe 1 or 2 pages with service history and discharge date) I filed mine with the county clerk 33 years ago just in case I loose my copy.

If the veteran is deceased, is it recommended or necessary to do this?

Antonius October 23, 2019 - 4:21 PM - 4:21 PM

That is a hard question. The deceased Vet , if they had an Honorable discharge should be entitled to a least a flag or something, If you have the time and any documents I would do it and talk to the officials at the session. If you can’t make that session they do have a Vets Affairs office in Martinez. If you can’t make that date you can still go to the County Clerk’s Office in Martinez any time and do it if you have any documents like a DD-214, a discharge document or any other proof of service. I would do it>>>>

@Antonius Thanks. I’ll do that. I think I know exactly where it is.

I sent a copy of the notice above to 2 family Vets. I doubt either will attend. I will get a note back saying thank you and that will be the end. Makes me sad.

Pat November 9, 2019 - 9:20 PM - 9:20 PM

I’d send a copy to a Vet-relative, but he’d have to day a day off of work to attend. What’s up with the weekday planning and not offering one in the evening or a weekend day?

Happy Birthday MARINE!
