Contra Costa Supervisors To Discuss Ban On Polystyrene Food, Beverage

The Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors this morning will consider an ordinance prohibiting the use of polystyrene food and beverage containers at restaurants, food trucks and other vendors.

The ordinance would go into effect May 1, 2020, and would only affect businesses operating on unincorporated county land.

Certain polystyrene products would be exempt, such as the trays used to package raw meat, reusable foam ice chests and pre-packaged food items. There would also be a process for vendors to request a one-year hardship exemption from the public works department.

Acting on a suggestion received during a public outreach effort conducted by the county, staff looked into the possibility of encouraging the use of compostable food and beverage containers, but recommended against
doing so because solid waste services throughout much of the county do not have separate collection options for food waste and food-contaminated compostables.

Moreover, compostable food containers that end up in a landfill would generate more greenhouse gases than polystyrene, according to county staff. More information can be found by consulting their report online at

Enforcing the prohibition is expected to cost the county about $25,000 per year, and that money will come from stormwater utility assessment funds.

Today’s meeting of the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. in the board chambers at 651 Pine St. in Martinez.

YOU’RE STEALING MY CHILDHOOD

Sam September 24, 2019 - 8:06 AM - 8:06 AM

HOW DARE YOU

Carpe Cat September 24, 2019 - 11:52 AM - 11:52 AM

I don’t think you’re a strident, hysterical, brainwashed teenage girl being exploited by her parents and other leftists. But then again you could be.

SF oh September 24, 2019 - 12:36 PM - 12:36 PM

@ Carpe Cat – Exactly my thoughts after seeing part of the U.N. hearing yesterday. I feel sorry for that girl – she is being used. Plus, she is on the Autism spectrum, has Obessive-Compulsive Disorder, and Asperger Syndrome. One would think her parents would try to protect her – but they are in show business and probably love the publicity.

Mutts September 24, 2019 - 8:13 AM - 8:13 AM

Hasn’t this already been done?

Patriot September 24, 2019 - 8:20 AM - 8:20 AM

Let the free market decide.

Or maybe you don’t remember what free is.

Safety Second September 24, 2019 - 9:24 AM - 9:24 AM

Municipal government bureaucrats and career whore politicians would be out of business if the dumbass constituents held there representatives to our founding principles:
LIMITED GOVERNMENT
INDIVIDUAL LIBERTIES
FREE MARKETS

Captain Bebops September 24, 2019 - 9:37 AM - 9:37 AM

Where in the world has there ever been such a thing as a “free market”? It is not a solution but sounds good to business people. Without some regulation you’ll wind up getting poisoned… more than you are now. 😉

Patriot September 24, 2019 - 7:22 PM - 7:22 PM

@Captain Bebops – July 4, 1776

“Moreover, compostable food containers that end up in a landfill would generate more greenhouse gases than polystyrene, according to county staff.” So what’s the solution? I know, bring your own ceramic or metal containers to food trucks and restaurants (doggie bags). No more prepared food deliveries/take out.

Captain Bebops September 24, 2019 - 9:40 AM - 9:40 AM

Got ourselves in a little bit of a fix haven’t we? We should have been more proactive about this instead of waiting until the garbage piled so much we could no longer ignore it.

The Professor September 24, 2019 - 4:15 PM - 4:15 PM

ZZ, the answer is simple. Just ban food and beverages.

Problem solved!

George September 24, 2019 - 9:39 AM - 9:39 AM

More needs to be done! We will survive.

Chicken Little September 24, 2019 - 6:03 PM - 6:03 PM

No. Actually, we won’t. We will eventually be extinct. The earth, on the other hand, will be just fine without us until the next civilization comes along and tries to destroy it.

Silva September 24, 2019 - 6:24 PM - 6:24 PM

We will certainly have left our mark on the old place.
