Concord Police Department Conducting Seat Belt Enforcement Tonight

The Concord Police Department will have additional officers on patrol this evening to make sure drivers and passengers are wearing their seat belt.

Drivers and passengers who do not have a seat belt on will be stopped and ticketed. This also includes drivers who do not secure children in child safety seats.

In California, the fine for a seat belt violation is $162. The fine for not securing a child in a child safety seat is $490.

“Buckling up only takes a few seconds and is the best defense in the event of a crash,” Sgt. Roberto Garcia said. “We have seen first-hand the consequences of not wearing a seat belt. This should be a no-brainer, but there are people who still choose to not wear a seat belt, or secure children in the correct car seat.”

In 2016, 426 people killed in crashes across the state were unrestrained.

Under California law, children under two-years-old who weigh under 40 pounds and are under 40 inches tall must ride in a rear-facing car seat. Children under the age of eight or under 4’9” tall must be secured in a car or booster seat.

Funding for this seat belt enforcement operation is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Maybe cops can do a stakeout on Clayton road. Plenty of speeders and racing around. Every single night.

Slow down especially in far right lanes. Drive courteously and save lives !!

How about a “Red Light Enforcement, while you’re at it, and in such a crack-down mood?

Funding for this seat belt enforcement operation is provided by “payers of State and Federal taxes via” a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Its a “no-brainer” that the police should be looking for felons who are preying on us (robbery rape etc) but they’d rather go the easy route and ticket people without seatbelts because that’s easy right? Pathetic.

That is good. Savings lives is worth the good faith efforts.

Not wearing a seat belt can only harm the person not wearing it; whereas red light runners and texters can hurt everyone. Go after them instead.

👍

Not true at all. When people don’t wear a seatbelt and are in a crash their additional injuries and potential deaths impact anyone who carries an insurance policy and insurance rates go up in time, in part, due to the amount they have to payout.

Agree! Get those cell phones violators.

Not wearing a seat belt is stupid. If you are in an accident and suffer injuries while not wearing a seat belt, your insurance should only pay the amount that would have been paid if you had been wearing a seat belt.

Another revenue raising event.

They should check for untied shoelaces while they’re at it… throw the book at ’em.

To Rob, I was referring to physical, not monetary, and I think you knew that.

I really don’t get these targeted “crack downs.”

Why don’t we just have cops out, working hard and enforcing all vehicle codes?

“Children under the age of eight or under 4’9” tall must be secured in a car or booster seat.”

That is wrong. It should say, “Children under the age of eight AND under 4’9” tall must be secured in a car or booster seat.”
