The Contra Costa Elections Division is kicking off what promises to be a busy election year in a fun, unique way.

The office is holding its third biannual photo contest, and the grand prize winner will be featured on the cover of the March 2020 Voter Information Guide, which goes out to over 650,000 registered voters in Contra Costa County.

The contest theme is “The Flora and Fauna of Contra Costa County.”

“The Photo Contest is a fun way to get our residents involved in the election process and pique their interest in voting,” Registrar of Voters Joe Canciamilla said. “It’s also a great way to highlight the talent of our residents.”

Submissions are due by midnight on September 30. Entries must be submitted digitally, along with a written photo description of no more than 100 words. There is no entry fee.

Past covers have featured photos highlighting the beautiful sights and history throughout the county, which enhances the voters’ experience. The second and third place winners will also have their photos featured on the Elections Division website, in the office lobby and in other elections publications.

Rich Hall of Walnut Creek, the winner of the November 2018 Photo Contest, says that he hopes his photo capturing service at the Pleasant Hill Library inspires others to participate in the voting process.

“I’m happy I could share a little bit of what this community means to me through my photography,” Hall said. “Working for the public library has been such a great opportunity to get to know and serve the folks in our county.”

The Elections Division held the first photo contest in 2016, and has received more than 100 entries during that time. Some of those submissions are featured on the Contra Costa Elections website, www.cocovote.us.

More information, including photo submission forms, are available on the Contra Costa Elections website, www.cocovote.us.

Had it on cassette in the red jeep (The Red Rocket) and played it until the tape broke. Good times.

May I take this opportunity to suggest they print their voter information guide on recycled paper (like the State of California does) rather than the expensive 20lb bond they used last election, which must cost a small fortune to produce in 650,000 copies. I removed all but the pages I needed in English and ended up with 1/4 of the pages they sent me which numbered in the hundreds. An incredible waste of taxpayer money on expensive 20lb paper, but who’s counting … obviously not the County.
