Umm – I thought Mary’s Pizza Shack was located on Contra Costa Blvd in Pleasant Hill near Ellinwood?? Never knows they were on Oak Grove Rd also?

I think you’re thinking of Melo’s that’s on Contra Costa. The Mary’s Pizza Shack was across the street from Shadelands business park in the shopping center where BevMo and Nob Hill Foods are.

I remember Mary’s on Contra Costa, between the Mall and Ellinwood, but that was a very long time ago, I only went once, because they were sponsoring a fundraiser for some organization that I wanted to support.

It was originally on Contra Costa Blvd but moved to Oak Grove years ago

There was a Mary’s pizza shack on the corner of contra costa blvd and ellinwood. Closed down years ago. Now the Walnut Creek location closed too, the only one nearby now would be Davis I believe

Mary’s Pizza Shack used to be on Contra Costa Blvd I think there was a bar where they had live music next door.

When a tenant loses their lease it does not occur immediately. If Mary’s closed because its lease was not renewed and if their employees were really “like our family” you would think they could have given them more notice.

Not the way corporate food places usually play it. “Like Family” is Not family (besides, some treat family like $h1t). If they forewarned the employees, many would jump ship before the doors close, leaving the manager short handed. Chances are that the store manager may not have known either.

Yes I can attest to this as well from personal experience years ago. Managers are always the last to know. This keeps store level employees from leaving their employer in a position of not having enough staff to wind down the business. I was told “everything was fine” (despite rumors) until the day it wasn’t fine.

Getting a dismissed employee off the property can be good business because you don’t know how that person will handle the news. Theft of materials, tools, and knowledge can happen, especially if the person has alarm codes, keys, etc. Ultimately you can’t trust anybody.

On the other side of the coin, it is always a very difficult task under any circumstance to let anyone go.

Ironically, most companies require 2 weeks notice from employees intending to leave.

Unfortunately, theft of materials and supplies is very common if the employees know of a closing ahead of time. That’s why the on site managers and employees are usually not given advance notice.

It is typical for a business to close in this manner, especially restaurants. Giving employees notice might incite disgruntled employees to behave badly, sabotage food and other business assets. Marie Calendars out in Concord closed suddenly right in the middle of the lunch hour and employees and customers were immediately asked to leave. One thing is for sure, the parent company knew this was coming as long as a year ago.

Yeah, I get the reasoning behind the lack of notice to employees, even though I disagree with it, so I wonder if the company provided any kind of severance pay to its “family” …

They never been in pleasant hill it’s only been Walnut Creek.

Weren’t they in that building where Chop Chop Korean BBQ is now? Like a long time ago?

Well if you have to be wrong, it’s always good to state it with authority.

They were in Pleasant Hill for many years and probably never should have moved.

I’m sorry that Mary’s closed because it looked like a very nice place although I never patronized it – not sure why, really, because I’m always at the post office and occasionally at Nob Hill – a great burger place was in the center but it closed and another fast food place opened but it was not fast enough for me although I tried it a couple of times – but this area is loaded with pizza places – Rocco’s of course, Mountain Mike’s and Whole Foods which has great thin crust pizza but I just don’t get there often – and just around the corner is Sorrento’s so the pizza options are many.

Many many many years ago, it was located in Pleasant Hill. That’s how I first came to know it. It was on Contra Costa Boulevard and my co-workers took me out there. I’m sorry to see it go!

The bar next door to Marys when it was located in Pleasant Hill was Sharkey’s, This was in 1994-1995.

They were in Pleasant Hill back in the early-mid nineties before they moved to the Oak Grove location. My son was a baby when we first took him there (he’s 26 now)

When I was younger, I used to go there all the time. The location is a bit out of the way, and unless you frequent that center, you probably wouldn’t even know it’s there. Was always more of a family place (read– a place to bring your kids).

Seems to me more and more restaurants are closing these days.

That their lease wasn’t renewed makes me wonder what’s up. Who else is going there?

I’m wondering if since Mod Pizza opened up across the way, along with other food businesses, if Mary’s saw a decline.

I mentioned this last week in “whatever”.
Peace and 🍕.

Yes you did… 3 Scooby points for you.

Last month the excellent manager of that restaurant left and moved on to bigger things. I wonder if they couldn’t replace him, and along with landlord negotiations they just decided to close it up. Restaurants work on very thin margins to begin with, any disturbance in the business plan can be reason to close.

Sorry to see this place go. The food was good and the service was always good as well.

Yes, they were in Pleasant Hill, on Contra Costa Blvd, before moving to Oak Grove/Citrus. Near Ellenwood

I wonder if nob hill foods is next.

I’m surprised that relic is still there. Who shops there? There’s a Safeway and a Whole Foods across the street.

Anyone remember Affagotso’s in Walnut Creek?…..not sure if the spelling is correct……..that was some good Italian food

Sure do remember Affagatso’s, was on the north west corner of Ygnacio Valley and Main, across the street from Gemco. They had rectangle pizzas, not round and the dough was almost an orange color.

Papagattso’s. Was across the street from Target in a strip mall. There was also a skateboard shop and a Copeland’s Sporting Goods behind. It is now that 5 or 6 story office building. Their sauce had raw celery in it. A little strange.

Awww..Have been here multiple times..and the food was good. (Not blown-away good). The staff was friendly and pleasant.
Now there’s only Rocco’s…(And the last time we went there, the food was just plain bad. And very few vegetarian choices as well).
So….!!

The parent company of Mary’s probably knew for more than a year that their lease was not being renewed. My guess is that business was off enough to cause them to closed that location rather than extend the lease. I can’t imagine that a landlord would not renew the lease of a major tenant like Mary’s considering that there are several other vacant spaces in that center and another isn’t going to help.
