Contra Costa County Fire Protection District crews are responding to a fire initially reported in a recreational vehicle near Buchanan Field Airport and state Highway 4 in Concord on Thursday afternoon, a fire spokesman said.
The fire spread to nearby vegetation.
The fire was initially reported at 1:12 p.m. near Solano Way and state Highway 4 near the airport, fire district spokesman Steve Hill said.
Smoke was visible from the highway and city streets.

UPDATE: The fire burned three RVs and spread to nearby grass, but crews were able to contain and knock down the blaze.
No injuries were reported.

Homeless vehicle?
Wondered where the fire was because of the smoke. Had to close up the house to keep the smell out. Because of the wind, I do hope they can get it out quickly. My fingers are crossed that it is out even as I type this.
My GPS routed me past the fire from Target right after it started. Lots of thick black smoke, but the flames were small at the time and looked like a brush fire to me. Several police and fire crew were both on the scene and en route.

RV fires are common this time of year?
No, these fires set by homeless people that burn up RVs in a storage place aren’t common. As somebody who lives a block from that fire and within 5 minutes of dozens of homeless camps under overpasses and down by the canal, I seriously hope homeless fires getting out of control doesn’t become common. Usually they set fires to keep warm in winter, when not fire season. So let’s just hope and pray this was a one off.

Three RVs…interesting. Is there an RV park in that area or a homeless encampment?
Homeless encampment. I was leaving Scandinavian designs and saw the smoke. Took Solano Way towards downtown Concord. Homeless were pulling their belongings from the area. Sure hope there were no animals in the RV’s if they belonged to the homeless.
It is only Spring and there has already been one too many fires around here
The RV’s were in a storage yard. They were not homeless RV’s. The fire was started by two homeless people on the side of the fence by the storage lot. It spread to the RV’s parked inside. The police knew who the homeless were and they have been arrested. My business is located near the fire.
Must have been the two homeless people I saw getting away from the fire and gathering their belongings. A man and a woman. Good to know they were not homeless RV’s with animals inside.
