Claim Jumper restaurant, located at 1981 Diamond Blvd. in Concord (Willows Shopping Center), was shut down this week after inspectors from the Contra Costa County Department of Environmental Health say they found the following:

  • 1 live cockroach underneath the cook line grill.
  • 1 dying cockroach on the floor in the cook line.
  • 10+ cockroaches on the wall and pipe underneath the 3 compartment sink and mechanical dishwasher.
  • 1 dead cockroach on the bottom shelf inside the 3 door refrigerator at the server station area.
  • 1 live cockroach on the paper towel box in the dry food storage area.

The restaurant has since been reinspected and reopened.

Did they administer first aid to the dying cockroach ?

Carnac the Magnificent April 5, 2019 - 8:28 AM - 8:28 AM

was it wearing a seatbelt?

Larry April 5, 2019 - 8:42 AM - 8:42 AM

Has anybody else noticed these closures are largely along the I-680 corridor?

Seems there’s a really dedicated health inspector there doing their job but what about the rest of Diablo Valley?

concord ygnacio April 5, 2019 - 2:42 PM - 2:42 PM

There are plenty of closures elsewhere too, like San Francisco creamery in downtown Walnut Creek and that pho restaurant in Martinez. There just happens to be a lot of restaurant along the 680 corridor, for obvious reasons.

Louise C April 5, 2019 - 8:55 AM - 8:55 AM

So glad to know that the public health dept is checking this stuff.

Concord mom April 5, 2019 - 9:00 AM - 9:00 AM

Sheesh! Stay home and eat now cause seems like lots of eateries are infested.

Shoulda Coulda April 5, 2019 - 9:53 AM - 9:53 AM

Concord mom-
When you see the exterminator company
vechicle in front of someone’s house,
chances are they have the same problems.
Do you think those people say- We’ve got
bugs. We can’t eat at home anymore.

concord ygnacio April 5, 2019 - 2:49 PM - 2:49 PM

@Shoulda Coulda:

The difference is the resident in the house are not at risk of using the contaminated food. With a restaurant, many of the employees don’t know or don’t care. They are held to a higher standard. since the public is at risk.

Dennis April 5, 2019 - 8:27 PM - 8:27 PM

@Shoulda Coulda-
Bugs in a house usually indicates there is food for the bugs ie: food scraps laying on the floor, open boxes in the pantry, lots of garbage around the exterior. Keep it clean and the bugs will go away.
Much harder for a restaurant and especially for one that takes two months to pay a contractor for some work done. That’s what happened to me. I am an electrician.
If they can’t pay their contractors on time, are they paying their pest control outfit on time? Is the pest control at Claim Jumper lacking for poor payment policies too? I know what I think.

Dawg April 5, 2019 - 9:20 AM - 9:20 AM

The cockroaches were claim jumpers.

Jo April 5, 2019 - 9:26 AM - 9:26 AM

The food inspectors’ jobs were the ones effected when the Government was shut down. Thank goodness the shutdown wasn’t long because these jobs are vital.given the fact of how many closures there have been just in our City.

D April 5, 2019 - 1:11 PM - 1:11 PM

Are you serious? The government shut down was Federal…these inspections are conducted by city and county officials.

Get help…you got TDS bad

concord ygnacio April 5, 2019 - 2:43 PM - 2:43 PM

No, the shut down affected federal inspectors, like for the USDA. The inspectors for Contra Costa Health are local and were not affected by the shutdown.

Ricardoh April 5, 2019 - 10:24 AM - 10:24 AM

You would think that managers or owners of restaurants would pay more attention to the cleanliness of their establishments with the way these health inspectors are making their rounds. Beside being closed down they have to be losing customers.

Kirkwood April 5, 2019 - 11:59 AM - 11:59 AM

Most people will never know unless they happen to go there while while the establishment is closed. Unless the posted inspection report is 3′ square they’ll never notice.

The people that know, are readers of Claycord.com. The Mayor knows that this is a “hot button” issue.

Mocassin0901 April 5, 2019 - 3:22 PM - 3:22 PM

Chain restaurants have higher ups to answer to. The manager might have tried to fix stuff but the corporate people didn’t want to lusten, it’s sad.

Jeff April 5, 2019 - 10:32 AM - 10:32 AM

From the information above I can conclude that the dying cockroaches just finished eating lunch while the live ones were still waiting to be seated…

Gittyup April 5, 2019 - 11:28 AM - 11:28 AM

Lol. Or, the dead ones died after waiting so long to eat.

Dorothy April 5, 2019 - 10:40 AM - 10:40 AM

Them too? Another one I won’t be going to in the future.

Alex April 5, 2019 - 11:24 AM - 11:24 AM

I used to work there and there is RATS too on the Kitchen.

smiley April 5, 2019 - 11:36 AM - 11:36 AM

I think people have exterminators at their house for outside spraying on a monthly basis so they do not have any insects in their house.

Gittyup April 5, 2019 - 11:54 AM - 11:54 AM

With Claim Jumper closed, poor little guys will have to trek all the way over to Panera and Fuddrucker’s. Either everybody’s got them, or they are hitchhiking in on somebody’s backpack, clothes, or purse.

Sunshine April 5, 2019 - 12:39 PM - 12:39 PM

I just gotta tell you, cockroach’s have been here long before we were, they will continue to be. You see or hear of them in restaurants, malls, and grocery stores. Spray, trap, they still come back! I really believe it has nothing to do with cleanliness. It does help, but like I said they rule the earth!

Dorothy April 5, 2019 - 2:23 PM - 2:23 PM

This place has awful food anyway….the cockroaches are the least of their problems!!

Steve April 5, 2019 - 2:39 PM - 2:39 PM

Larry makes a good point, this is probably the third place in that area that’s been subject to Dirty Dining. Either every place there has them or the property manager is only focusing on certain spots.

concord ygnacio April 5, 2019 - 5:39 PM - 5:39 PM

He makes a good point?? I debunked his statement in my reply under his. And what other restaurants in the plaza were closed, besides the Jungle, which is far away, relatively speaking?

No Excuses April 5, 2019 - 3:33 PM - 3:33 PM

Retrain that inspector. That dying roach—just faking it. The dead one in the fridge—will revive when he warms up. The only way roaches will die is if they are squished flat—twice, maybe three times!

Bill Bob April 5, 2019 - 10:07 PM - 10:07 PM

Roach Beef on Rye

Dave April 6, 2019 - 4:14 AM - 4:14 AM

Who at claycord is responsible for posting Dirty Dining. E-mail please.

Ano April 6, 2019 - 11:40 AM - 11:40 AM

Why

Tasty April 6, 2019 - 8:51 PM - 8:51 PM

Well, we ate there March 30, and the meal was great, didn’t see any additions to our food. Creeps me out a bit though.
