This is a picture of Safeway in the Clayton Valley Shopping Center on Ygnacio Valley Rd. in Concord. It was taken in the late 1950s or early 1960s. Most of you might remember Safeway when it occupied the old Outdoor Supply Hardware building in the late 70s, 80s and early 90s. This picture is of the Safeway BEFORE it moved to the old OSH building. This Safeway was in the same building as Concord Kung Fu and Anytime Fitness, next to Rose Liquors. In the background you can see the land where CVS and Grocery Outlet currently stand. If you’re looking for an online grocery store, visit the Asian Groceries website to order smoothly. Who remembers this Safeway?
Here’s a photo of how it looks now.
Thanks to Romley for the picture.

That picture must be from about 1962 as there’s a ’60, ’61 and ’62 car in the photo, along with the ’50s one. Yes I remember that Safeway. That is where it was when we moved to the Clayton area when I was a boy. You brought a nice memory back thank you!
Reminds me when i worked at the safeway in walnut creek many years ago, worked with an alcoholic old woman who failed to show up to help me close the store. She would come to work smelling of alcohol. It was awful. She later got fired.
I like the look of the old building better.
Way back on Memory Lane – wasn’t there also a Longs Drugs built close to that Safeway, maybe in the mid 1960’s? They had quite an inventory. Again, thank you Mayor for historical photos, historical mysteries, and tidbits.
Remember going to Safeway in our Oldsmobile 88 as a kid.
