This one was posted a few years ago, but we wanted to highlight it again because it’s a great photo.
Thanks to “Kirkwood” for sending this 1959 picture from a Mt. Diablo High School yearbook showing Park-N-Shop and Willow Pass Rd. in Concord.
“Kirkwood” says “At the far right is the water tower that served Concord. It belonged to California Water Service and was located near where the Brenden theatre is now and directly across from Lamberts Bakery bldg. There was a small office at the base of the tower. I don’t remember the source of the water but I do remember it tasted terrible!”
Thanks for the look back in time!

Loved Park N’ Shop when I was little in the 60s. We went to Woolworths and Grants all the time. Oh and Rhodes. Most of my pictures with Santa were taken at Rhodes (and a few at Wards in PH and Longs on Clayton Rd). Park N’ Shop is so scummy now … such a shame! And don’t even get me started on when they removed the big sign …
Didn’t the words “Park” and “Shop” on the big sign have lights that alternated Park, Shop, Park, Shop, Park, Shop, …?
Yes they did.
Dad used to ride me and him there on his motorcycle in the early ’70s. They had an awesome pie place (10 cent deposit on the pan!) that we’d frequent. Also love the buffet that was there (Smorgy Bob’s?).
Good memories.
Thanks for the memories – we used to go to Beede’s – uh oh – or was it Grant’s? . Also remember Kahn’s and Smorgy Boys. Our first Christmas in Claycord we didn’t have much money, so we divvied up a little for each family member and went to Beede’s (or Grant’s?) to buy our Christmas presents. One of the best Christmases ever.
Remember that time, flooding of area was in 1962.
Watched my Dad, out of bedroom window, dig a trench from
back yard out to street to drain six inches of water from back yard.
