The Claycord Online Museum – The Gravesites At The End Of Russelmann Park Road In Clayton

It’s been 18 years since we last talked about the gravesites at the end of Russelmann Park Road in Clayton. The first grave (pictured above) belongs to Alma Marsh, who died at the age of 2-years and 6-days, sometime in the 1860s. Alma Marsh’s dad’s name was Josh Marsh. Josh was the nephew of Jonathan Marsh, the man who Marsh Creek Road is named after. Josh Marsh owned a limestone quarry in Clayton. The first two floors of the DeMartini Winery (now Clayton City offices) were built with limestone from Joshua Marsh’s quarry and the headstone pictured above is also made from limestone. There is another little gravestone directly across from Alma Marsh’s gravestone. The contents of that grave remain a mystery. Anyone out there know anything about it? (see below).

sorry don’t know the conversation but is this the marsh family of John Marsh? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Marsh_(pioneer) My curiosity only, don’t know anything else.

Wouldn’t you think there would be some Horsey type Clayton “association” — or some individual with a few extra dollars and a Sunday or two to spare every Spring, and with the fortitude and Christianity to adopt, preserve and honor that sweet little baby’s grave site?

A new fence, cut some weeds maybe leave a few flowers?
Is it on private property?

I don’t know who owns it, but if there’s a path, no one should object to having a child’s grave preserved. (except for the 4 anti-faiths who down-voted my suggestion~;)

(and thank you for the clean up on aisle 5 Mr. Mayor)

No clue – but thank you, Mayor, for covering local historical stories like this. I remember Russellman Park summers with nostalgia – think there was also a short trail leading up to a waterfall? Happy Friday & have a great weekend, all!

The historical marker near Martinez where Dr. John Marsh was murdered doesn’t get much care either. Real dirty & litter around there. The plaque is barely legible.
