Congressman DeSaulnier Issues Statement On “Department of Transportation’s Reckless Action to Upend Electric Vehicle Use”

Congressman DeSaulnier issued the following statement after the Trump Administration suspended implementation of the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Formula Program:

“The transportation sector is the leading source of greenhouse gas emissions in the United States. Electric vehicles (EVs) are crucial to reducing GHG emissions and curbing the existential threat of climate change while also having the potential to save drivers hundreds or even thousands of dollars in gas money annually. Given the obvious benefits of EVs, it is in everyone’s best interest to make it easier for Americans to drive them.

As a former member of the California Air Resources Board and Chairman of the transportation committees in both the California State Assembly and the California State Senate, I have seen firsthand how California’s forward-looking policies on climate change and greenhouse gas emissions drive innovation, economic growth, and job creation. That’s why I authored the Clean Corridors Act, which helped create and fund a $2.5 billion landmark new EV charging infrastructure program through the 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to make hydrogen fuel cell and electric battery powered cars more accessible and affordable for Americans.

The Department of Transportation’s decision to suspend approvals of State Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Deployment plans, which are required to receive NEVI funding, undoes the progress these two programs achieved, sets us back in the fight against climate change, and leaves American drivers and consumers in the lurch.

In 2024, China’s share of the global EV market grew to 76%, outpacing the U.S. in sales, and vastly surpassed the U.S. in number of public EV chargers with over 3.2 million public charge points. If the U.S. wants to be a leader in the transportation and energy sectors, we need a strong federal investment in electric vehicles and their charging infrastructure to meaningfully address climate change, help lower energy and transportation costs for Americans, and maintain global competitiveness. As a senior member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, I urge the Secretary of Transportation to reverse this myopic and reckless decision.”

Doesn’t this guy ever shut up?

Is he still talking? Clearly he has missed the direction the majority of Americans want to go (is he denying “democracy?”). Mark, why not focus on supporting the investigation of fraud costing we taxpaying citizens billions, if not trillions of dollars? FEMA just gave 59 million to house illegal aliens in a NY luxury hotel. Believe me, more people are concerned about that than they are the EV farce.

Your thoughts on the waste of money it is to cultivate Mars?

Exploration of Mars makes a heck of a lot more sense for use of money than putting up illegal invaders in luxury hotels. I am surprised you need to be explained such a distinction.

20

Neither makes any sense and that’s the point I’m trying to make.

You can’t come here day after day railing about money being “wasted” and then somewhat defund another waste of money. How does colonization of Mars help anyone here except for Elon? Do you realize that a trip to Mars, just to get there, takes from 6-9 months?

We have bigger issues as a country and a world than some billionaires pipe dream.

And once again you believe all that Musk/GOP say. Do you ever fact check anything?

https://www.allsides.com/story/immigration-elon-musk-claims-fema-sent-59m-nyc-hotels-house-migrants-last-week

no attempt will ever be made to send man to Mars, they cant even get to the moon for the first time.

Thank you for the link. I’m not sure if you believe it was some kind of flex, but everything in that link illustrates that YOU are missing the point. We still have legal residents of North Carolina living in tents, we have tens of thousands of homeless US citizens and veterans living in squalor on the streets, yet FEMA still sent payments of approximately $59 million in taxpayer funds to New York to care for mostly undocumented aliens in the form of housing (in luxury hotels) and other aid.

You post a link to an opinion piece as a rebuttal? And the gist of the piece? “They’re not all in tents, some of them have campers.” Let me spell it out for you – taxpayer funds allocated to FEMA need to go to domestic disaster victims, NOT ILLEGAL ALIENS.

If they pursue that at least it won’t be done under cover of USAID, where it’s been shown we are wasting billions on woke and DEI bulls**t.

Mark,
This is why we don’t like this program. It’s less about EVs and more about the cost and the benefits received from incurring these costs. $7.5 BILLION for 7 charging stations with 38 slots to charge your car is an expense that makes the CA High Speed Rail look reasonable. And it only took 2+ years to build these 7 charging stations.

It’s examples like this that make DOGE attractive. Any prudent steward of public funds (that’s you Mark, excluding the prudent part!) would know in an instant that the price tag for this boondoggle Yugely outweighs the public good. Someone is making bank and not delivering, all on our dime, and we are sick of it.

You want $ to fund this stuff? Maybe sponsor a bill that earmarks some of the chinese tariff $ to go to EV charging stations.

They are long term projects. Awarding the money is only the beginning, planning permitting and construction take the majority of the time.

those articles are misleading you to think nothing happened for the money but really it just hasn’t played out yet

In a nutshell, it’s throwing money at bad ideas that make no economical sense.
Democrats are experts at that.

11

2 years, 7 charging stations. $7.5 billion. Think about that for a second, Truth.

If a private company saw profit potential, it would build these charging stations 10x as fast and for 1/10th the cost. But the private sector does not see a profit, so they refuse to allocate capital.

The issue is not whether EVs are a good or bad thing. The issue is the government wasting our money on (take your pick) useless projects, poor planning, regulatory b.s., graft, inefficiency, etc. Just look at two of the biggest projects in quite a while: The Bay Bridge and the High Speed Rail. Both projects have merit and in the case of the bridge, it was a necessity. But when the govt says it will take 5 yrs and $1 Billion to complete but it takes 20 yrs and $10 Billion to complete, that’s when we should all say “Enough!”. There comes a point in every project where the costs of time and money vastly outweigh any benefit. For $7.5 Bil, this charging station scheme is one of those.

People are holding onto vehicles longer and it would appear public is reluctant to but EVs. Here’s an idea, force those running CA to revert back to sane wildfire management methods. What’s the point of reducing greenhouse gas emissions if a single fire season wipes out almost two decades of reductions?

Electric Vehicles are a pain in rear. Taking up all the parking spaces, people tripping over the hoses outside whole foods.
THERE IS NOT ENOUGH ELECTRICITY FOR HIS PLAN AND WE WILL LIVE IN THE DARK ALL THE TIME.

I wonder if Mark drives a electric car?

18

This isn’t about Greenhouse, it’s about Greenbacks.

25

Probably for him.

When are we going to see more EV fire apparatus, EV police & EV ambulances?
I understand that there are a couple of fire depts with fire engines but we should all hear more data prior to force feeding us these vehicles, specific hours and very few charging stations.

13

Cry more.

.04% (419ppm) co2 in atmosphere… not even 1/10 of a percent. Keep selling the grift jacka$$

Ok. The Oceans and Volcanoes control most of the climatic conditions. And most investors are not receiving returns on their investments. EV’s are not selling at the dealerships. So, is that the goal? To bankrupt the auto industry? Check the 2015 published documentary by the National Geographic. https://youtu.be/uOD4zhHSJp0?si=5Jvad5gFU3KDi28L

11

Mark,
.
Government shouldn’t be paying for the installation of chaging stations.

19
2

Actually to enable apartment dwellers and lower income people, they should.

0
21

Truth,
.
Government has required some apartment building owners to install charging stations. How many lower income people own electric cars?

15

So, they will eventually drive apartment owners out of business, just like they are driving big business out of the state.
Not all of us think that the government needs to be our mommy and provider.

14

The above is in response to Truth.

The epitome of a dusty old fart. Probably drinks white wine.

Infrastructure is part of it, the technology still needs to address several items. Full electric is not the solution due to so many restrictions and apartments and high density houses cannot be supported. The cost of electricity and the cost of these vehicles create too many restrictions. Get PGE to stop having some of the highest rates in the nation please. Mark we should talk again at some point, would love to have this conversation with you. Let’s get more hybrid types so people don’t get stuck and so restricted.

Hey DeSourair: Do you have any idea where all the power would come from to build all the electric cars you democrats think will save the world? How about this one: where will all the power come from to charge all those electric cars?
Do us a favor and take your self serving platitudes elsewhere.

11

I love gas, I love electric. Having a strong electric charging infrastructure is good, it just has to be implemented without graft and bloat. Yes there is totally inadequate grid capacity for everyone to have an electric car and charge at home – that is something to blame our incompetent and corrupt state for.

Electric offers insane power off the line and you have no soul if you claim to love cars yet have no appreciation for the acceleration potential.

The unspoken benefit that no one talks about is that every electric vehicle operating around pedestrians and domiciles is one ICE engine not pumping poisonous fumes into the lungs of those pedestrians and people in their homes. Diesels especially are extremely toxic and really should not be idling anywhere near people.

Seeing all the electric hatred here is pretty sad.

10

Electric offers insane power off the line and you have no soul if you claim to love cars yet have no appreciation for the acceleration potential.”
The adults here understand that acceleration potential is only useful on racetracks. And perhaps for d’bags who are in a hurry to cut off that other car.

Without Graft and Bloat these projects would evaporate.

DeSaulnier was part of CARB eh? Makes sense now.
