A solo vehicle crash on I-680 in Martinez left one occupant dead and the other with major injuries.
On February 10, at approximately 10:32AM, officers assigned to the California Highway Patrol’s (CHP) Contra Costa Area office responded to a solo vehicle crash which occurred on I-680 northbound, just south of Marina Vista.
The preliminary investigation indicates a white Dodge Caravan, occupied by one male adult and one female adult, was traveling on I-680 northbound, just south of Marine Vista. For reasons still under investigation, the Dodge veered off the right shoulder, returned to the road, crashed into the concrete center divider, and overturned as a result.
Tragically, the female occupant was ejected during the crash, sustained fatal injuries, and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The other occupant involved sustained major injuries and was transported to the hospital. During the investigation it was determined neither occupants were wearing their seatbelts during the crash.
Authorities are still investigating who was driving at the time of the crash and whether DUI was a factor. Fortunately, increased awareness about safe driving and responsible habits has helped prevent many car accidents, making roads safer for everyone.
This crash remains under investigation. If anyone witnessed the incident or the events leading up to it, please contact Contra Costa Area office in Martinez at (925) 646-4980 or email your contact information to 320Investigations@chp.ca.gov to be contacted by the investigating officer.

Seatbelts save lives, and keep both hands on the steering wheel.
Per the CHP incident page earlier today (while this was still active) witnesses said that the person was driving recklessly (code 23103).
My husband and I left PH to go to Cordelia. We were stuck in traffic for over an hour. We drove right by the accident. So very sad.
Vehicles are equipped with seat belts for a reason.
Sadly, common sense did not prevail in this case.
Some people just wont be told what to do,and think they can jump out of the car when they see a crash coming.Go to Antioch and look at locals while they drive.NAone of them are wearing a seat belt. They are smarter than you. This is why they live in Antioch, its for Mensa members.
