The U.S. Post Office will close on Thursday Jan.9 for the National Day of Observance for former President James Carter.
Most employees will get a paid day off.
According to recent reports, the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) spends approximately $85.4 billion on operating expenses annually, which translates to roughly $233 million per day based on a 365-day year; however, the exact daily cost can fluctuate depending on mail volume and other factors.
Thanks. No mail in honor of ?
Carter wasn’t as bad as some, so I don’t begrudge him a no-mail day.
But I don’t recall this ever happening before. Is my memory failing? Did we stop the mail for any other ex-president who died?
Curious about this.
Ancient Mariner,
.
Yes, all federal government offices normally close for a day or more for a “National Day of Mourning,” in this case it seems to be a “National Day of Observance,” when a former president dies. This was the case when former President George H.W. Bush died in 2018, former President Gerald R. (L.L.K.) Ford died in 2006, former President Ronald W. Reagan died in 2004, and former President Richard M. Nixon died in 1994.
As Black Knight had stated, this has been happening I believe since LBJ closed federal offices for the JFK day of mourning. I understand this, but this really just gives a vacation day (that we taxpayers cover) for federal workers. I’d prefer that federal offices MAY close, as federal workers have the option to have the day off for observance but will not be paid for it.
Thank you, Jeff and Black Knight. I never noticed the shutdown on previous occasions.
Every American should get a bag of peanuts in his honor.
And have to wait in long lines to buy gas.
Doesn’t this just make people like me who disliked him in the first place dislike him even more? Seems counterproductive. Where’s the upside?
Let’s start with the fact that it is customary for the Fed to shut down for a national day of mourning for ANY sitting or former president. I wonder what kind of civics or government classes some of you had in school?
Paranoid pablito,
.
Should this only happen when a president who you liked dies? What about all of the Americans who didn’t like the presidents you liked? This is the traditional and customary process when a president dies.
There is no upside in death, whoever you are.
I will always remember Carter for stagflation, the oil crises, and the American hostages he failed to rescue.
Interesting, I remember the hostages being released after Reagan was sworn in after making a deal with the Iranians to screw Carter.
Carter screwed himself, the country, and the planet with the way he mishandled Iran, and we are all still dealing with the evil he allowed to be unleashed upon the world.
Perhaps remember him for what he did when he left office and the kind of man he was. He lived to be 100 years old, and was only presidenf for four years, there were more to his life than president. He was a very devoted husband (no cheating on Roslyn) and lived like a Christian. Perhaps the presidency and Christianty is not a good combination.
Joe Biden and Jimmy Carter are the two worst Presidents we’ve ever had and I would say Joe Biden has the edge ridiculous to shut down the post office I’m sure it goes beyond that neither one of them deserve anything no roads named after them no holidays nothing I’m sure there be more celebrations on January 20th once Joe is finally out of office a big celebration
I’d actually say biden is worst (by far), followed by little o, then Jimmy. I have read Carter was a nasty man when the cameras were not on him, but I do know of all his efforts with Habitat for Humanity. I do not think little o nor biden have done anything that would be considered charitable, ever. and both are nasty.
America has completely descended into the abyss of stupidity. Nothing surprises me anymore the ridiculous holidays, remembrances, special months people need to get in with their lives and stop looking for escapes from reality. The Post Office is not government run nor should they observe this.
Well you are wrong as usual. USPS is a federally run agency. The employees retire with PERS benefits. Only public employees can receive PERS or CERL benefits Perhaps you need to start educating yourself.
The USPS is an independent agency of the executive branch and is overseen by the
Postal Regulatory Commission. The USPS is completely self funded and receives
no funds from US taxpayers. PERS and CERL are specific to state employees.
Dawg,
.
The USPS received a 10-year $50 billion financial relief bailout in 2022, which was passed by both houses of Congress and signed by President Biden.
Dawg
Feds are under PERS type system. Most states are a PERS types system but not all are the same. CERLS are not as common .
Many agencies can be “self funded” but that does not mean they are not gov’t run. Buchanan Field and the Byron airport are self funded but are run by and fall under the county. Actually most of the county public works dept is self funded with grants they apply for. The percentage of genera fund at one point was 1.6% and that was so the Board of Stupidvisors could have ultimate control. Anything with an enterprise fund is considered “self funded” Also being self funded doesn’t mean no gov’t funding but rather the funds are in specific accounts just for the purpose of the agency, thus the term “enterprise fund”
And before yo say anything I’m a retired gov’t accountant so I do know how things work. FYI – there are 3 typed of gov’t funds. They are general, fiduciary and enterprise
I will never forget Jimmy Carter’s brother Billy. Billy got drunk at a White House bar-b-que
and took a wiz on the lawn in front of everybody, including the press. The Falls City Brewing Company decided to name a beer after him, and Billy beer was created. Billy Carter was paid
to advertise and promote the beer on TV, magazines and billboards. Millions of cases were
sold in the latter part of the 70s.
It was awful beer tho.
DAWG,
.
Do you remember Billy Carter’s “Redneck Power” pickup truck? It was made into a model by Revell.

That’s one righteous scale model. Let us know how it turns out.
I worked for the Fed Govt and when Nixon died, all Fed Govt facilities, including the USPS was closed for the National Day of Mourning. Its not just the USPS that is closed, but all Federal facilities. Does not matter who was US President.
Yes it is Customary for federal agencies to close in respect of former presidents.
I swear some people on here have ZERO decency.
Carter’s popularity in Springfield.

I’m getting a flash back when I worked at a gas station, it was fun enforcing odd even days. Time for a Billy Beer to help ease the pain.
Postal service that runs a 2 billion dollar deficit yearly is giving all its employees, a paid day off?
A federal government that is $36,000,000,000,000 in debt is giving a paid day off to many federal employees, compliment of we taxpayers who work that day though….
Well then go work for the gov’t.
Government workers can always counted on to find ways to slack off while spending more money.
Just what the post office needs, a day off……..as if they haven’t lost enough money already……..when are rate going up again?
Snickered,
.
Rates for stamps are scheduled to increase in July 2025, January 2026, July 2026, January 2027, and July 2027.
RIP … but… he gave away the Panama Canal … not the best move
I did get an email from the VA letting me know that the hospital and clinics would be open.
