You don’t necessarily have to donate money, giving some of your time is also appreciated.
Before the pandemic, I volunteered my time, 3–4 times a week at the Children’s Hospital in Oakland, now I’m there just a couple of times a month, but it’s something. Binging a smile
to their face, and hearing the laughter of some very sick children, is all the reward I will ever need.

Children’s Hospital in Oakland. The name has been changed to
UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital, but I still call it Children’s Hospital.
The best I can do is give them hope.

I always put something in the kettle of the Salvation Army ringers, and send them a little money as well. Where I grew up in the country in Denmark, we lived 10 miles from the nearest town, a town of about 25,000 people. One Friday before Christmas we would take the bus to Koege, to do Christmas shopping, I think probably the only time of the year my dad would go shopping with my mom and me. There were always Salvation Army ringers, and my mother would always put something in the kettle, saying they did a lot of good work. So, it is mostly in memory of my mother I continue to give to them.
My mother came from a large and poor family, my dad came from a big family as well (he had 6 brothers), and especially after the war things were tough for them, but my mother alwasy said “I hope I’m never so poor that I don’t have anything to give to others”.

The Fisher House Foundation
The Fisher House Foundation’s purpose is to provide free, comfortable housing for military and veteran families while a loved one is receiving medical treatment at a military or VA medical center.
Unfortunately my Friend’s nephew was wounded in combat in Iraq with the USMC. My Friend spent a week at The Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington DC visiting. He stayed at a Fisher House Foundation facility at no cost.
Charity Navigator rates them 4 out of 4 stars for the last 16 years with a Charity score of 96%. Charity Watch rates then A+ with 91% of funds raised being spent on programs.
None, don’t give cept to my immediate and extended family.

Wounded Warriors of DAV …. fyi- ASPCA – They spend over $100M on advertising and the CEO makes over $1M …. I’ve taken them to task several times telling them to take $50M of their ad $$ and cut the CEO’s salary to $200K and of course you can guess what their official response is – we’ll take it under advisement … yeah right

Wounded Warriors and I got in on a thing to help buying night vision sets for Ukrainian Special Forces. The former isn’t tax deductible. 🇺🇸 🇺🇦
None. Most of the donation go to the people at the top of the organization hierarchy.
If you really wanted to give, I’m sure you could find a charity where most of the money actually goes to the charity.

Loaves and Fishes of Contra Costa is a good organization to support.
