The following is from the Martinez Police Department:
Recently, several citizens have been contacted by person(s) claiming to represent law enforcement (even impersonating Martinez Police Officers via a fake phone number that appears to be from our dispatch center). Scammers can use various methods to imitate local phone numbers, and often use threats of arrest or negative legal action to intimidate victims into divulging personal information and/or submitting payment.
Remember, Martinez Police will NEVER ask for money to clear up legal matters/warrants.
Here’s some helpful suggestions to help you keep your information safe:
• Stay Vigilant: If someone contacts you unexpectedly, especially with threats of legal action, fines, or urgent demands, be cautious.
• Verify Contact Information: Always double-check phone numbers or email addresses before responding. Official organizations never ask for sensitive info via text or email.
• Don’t Share Personal Info: Never give out personal, financial, or login information over the phone, via email, or on social media-especially to strangers.
• Report Suspicious Activity: If you’re contacted by a potential scammer, report it to the relevant authorities (ie; bank, credit card company, etc.)
If you feel you are a victim of this crime, you are encouraged to contact the Martinez Police Department directly at the following telephone number. Martinez Police Department Dispatch 925-372-3440
Just don’t answer the phone if the number isn’t in your contact list. Let it go to voice-mail. If you don’t want to deal with the voice-mail, fill it up with a bunch of bogus messages. The caller will get a message that the voice-mail is full.
Thank you for the heads-up
