Contra Costa CHP Reminds The Public About The Dangers Of Speeding

The following is from the CHP – Contra Costa:

Speeding is one of the leading causes of traffic collisions, injuries, and fatalities. The faster you drive, the less time you have to react, and the more severe a crash can become.

Did you know?

• The risk of severe injury or fatality during a car crash can be four to five times higher at 100 mph compared to those at 65 mph.
• Speed limits are set to protect drivers, passengers, and pedestrians. Driving even 10 mph over the speed limit can dramatically increase the risk of a fatal accident.

– Be responsible. Follow posted speed limits.
– Plan ahead. Allow extra time for travel.
– Stay alert. Speeding reduces your time to react in unexpected situations.

Tire wear, wet road surface are factors.
Most people have no clue how many feet it takes to stop at a given speed.

103 mph stopping distance 631 feet.

Allow the impatient to speed ahead of you, they will be the ones on side of the road talking to the nice officer. Method serves me well, last speeding ticket 1975.

The numbers vary widely due to driver skill and focus while driving, in addition to the factors you mention. Our Mazda 3 will stop a lot shorter than our minivan and they are both driven accordingly. The test results for our Mazda 3 are 119 feet from 60 on the OEM tires; however it now has higher performance tires that I suspect will get that down to ~110 feet. The first thing I do when I have to slow down quickly is to check my mirrors to see if I have to try to get out of the way of the car behind me.

My last speeding ticket was about a year and a half ago for 5kmh (3MPH) over the limit in Italy.

… my last was for 3 mph over the limit too – in San Ramon on Camino Ramon… was going 38 mph in a 35 mph …. judge wouldn’t budge on it .. true story

My last one was in 1985 coming off the Benicia Bridge on 680 southbound.

Yet on the other hand the faster you drive you’ll get there sooner and could miss an accident that would have happened if you were driving slower. I’ve been speeding all my life and I’ve never gotten in an accident nor have I ever got a speeding ticket.
Speed doesn’t always kill but being clueless and stupid kills more often.

The slower you drive the less chance you have of arriving at a vehicle accident.
Your logic is brilliant.

How about the CHP start enforcing all traffic laws ?
Every day it is the same old thing.
Expired tags from 2020 , 2021 , 2022, 2023.( likely no insurance )
Following too closely.
Failure to use indicators.
Reckless driving.
Unsafe lane changes.
And speeding.

Seems the CHP does not want to enforce traffic laws unless they get extra funding for it.
Same goes for local PD’s.

Enforcing traffic laws in California is contrary to the democrat politicians(and their supporters) policy of promoting lawlessness. The politicians encourage crime, criminal behavior, and they create hazardous roadways and unsafe communities.

Drivers who have an iota of brain cells know that speeding is dangerous.

What is dangerous is trying to navigate Clayton road going 50 miles an hour when everybody else is driving 40 miles per hour, the trick is do not use your turn signals when zigzagging lane hopping otherwise cars will intentionally try to cut you off and not let you switch a lane at the last moment.

Works925,
You should try always driving backwards at full speed, everywhere you go. That way you could really zip through traffic, and all the other drivers wouldn’t know if you were coming or going!

What is dangerous is driving down Ygnacio, all the way to 680, going 40-45 when everyone else is going 60 and weaving in and out. No police presence whatsoever.
I agree that ALL police departments, Sheriff, and CHP should start enforcing traffic laws but that would be considered oppressing. There are certain ethnic groups who do not give a care because in their home countries traffic laws are not followed. Also, something needs to be done about blinding headlights and totally blacked out windows.
