Rare Comet Last Visible From Earth 80,000 Years Ago Makes Return Visit – Did You See It?

Did you see the comet in the sky on Sunday night?

Astronomers say the comet was last visible from Earth about 80,000 years ago when Neanderthals roamed the planet.

Thanks to the anonymous Claycordian who shared this great picture with us (above).

I went out to look for the comet last night, but I think I was a bit too early. I’m now seeing that 40 minutes after sunset is the best time to see it. That would be about 7:10 – 7:15 pm. I’ll try again tonight.

what direction of the sky? West? North? Overhead?

The comet will be close to the horizon, a little above where the sun went down. You will need a clear view of the western horizon to have a chance to see the comet.

Look west 45 minutes after sunset.
It will be low in the sky above the horizon.

The only comet I ever saw was the Hale-Bopp Comet in 1996 to 1997. I remember seeing it every morning when I was leaving for work, it was visible for about a year and a half. The Hale Bopp was 120 million miles from Earth, so it didn’t look like it was moving, and all I could see was the long white tale in the dark sky.
Food for thought: Everything we see in space, we are seeing it the way it was at a certain time in the past. Stars are billions of light years from Earth, but the farthest star we can see with the naked eye is 10,000 light years away. That means if you see a star that is 10,000 light years away, you are seeing what it looked like 10,000 years ago. This is because it took 10,000 years for the light from that star to travel through space and reach your eyes.

Hale-Bopp was incredible I watched it for days in the sky while I was on my honeymoon on the ocean in Northern California I’ll never forget it.

I’ll wait for next time.

I’m not getting too excited until I see all four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. All four, Pestilence especially.
