Concord, Kitakami Prepare To Celebrate 50-Year Anniversary As Sister Cities

Concord officials and community members are eagerly awaiting the arrival of a delegation from our sister city, Kitakami, Japan.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the sister city relationship that was founded in 1974 by then-mayors Goro Saito of Kitakami and Richard Holmes of Concord.

Every five years a delegation from one city visits the other to participate in a cultural exchange and build good will.

This year’s visitors have a packed itinerary, Oct. 2-6, that includes a visit to City Hall and the friendship garden that was established as a tribute to this decades-long relationship.

New this year is a special monument (pictured at right), which was installed recently in honor of the 50th anniversary.

During their trip, the delegation will also visit the new Creative Concord mural “Onikenbai Dancers” by Japanese-American artist JUURI at 2345 Willow Pass Rd., which is a tribute to our sister city.

“Every five years a delegation from one city visits the other to participate in a cultural exchange and build good will.”

I will translate!

“Every five years 20 Concord government workers go to Japan for a 3 months vacation with endless sushi and wagyu steaks and 5 star accommodations. They grunt at the Japanese and litter and make a horrible impression. When they leave Kitakami breathes a collective sigh. Our taxes pay for it.”

Your translation is way off.
